  • 2 months of pure satisfaction
Style: Canon SLR Mount Configuration: Lens Only
I finally replaced the Canon 75-300mm kit lens that came with my original T3i and I can't be happier. I have a Sigma 50mm lens that I love but was always handicapped by it's fixed focal length. After attempting to do some lower light shots at night I was finally fed up with the Canon lens. I immediately ordered this lens and from the first shot I took I was impressed. The color saturation was incredible and the long distance focus was incredibly accurate. I highly recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their kit lens. ... show more

  • Great lens for the money
Style: Canon SLR Mount Configuration: Lens Only
I'm a photojournalist at a very small newspaper. I wanted a lens that could be used in most situations without having to go to the camera bag to switch between close-ups and sports action needs -- not to mention tourism use. This is a great lens for the money on my 60D once everything was all on the same page. Out of the box it did not like the 60D's multi-focus points so I switched to the center point and that helped. AF struggles at 300mm and the OS juttered a lot a first. It felt like the lens had to get a read on the camera, or the other way around. I'm not technically skilled enough to know the difference. I bought the dock to do a firmware update which greatly improved performance and smoothed some rough edges including the OS. That said, we suggest you encourage your Sigma dealer to do this for you as a term of sale. This lens does not have customization setting features so the only other thing you can do with the dock is tinker with focus range settings at different zoom points. We have not had the lens long enough to mess with the factory settings. It takes great pictures and gives me the versatility I'm looking for. We'll see in the long run. It's heavier than the average lens and feels extremely well built. Some have complained the zoom is stiff but I find this comforting as a sign of tight tolerances. Two things that annoyed me: The lens cap is not secure if you have a UV filter attached and is constantly falling off as I walk about; and the lens hood is not very secure and it also easily falls off. Added some small dabs of super glue to the hood in strategic friction points (and let it dry thoroughly) and this seems to have helped secure it. Do NOT put glue on the lens. The hood is easily replaced. I'll be looking for a different lens cap because this one will probably be lost soon enough. ... show more

  • for almost 3x the cost, you get a lens which is probably 2.5x more useful as the other sigma 300mm zoom
Style: Nikon SLR Mount Configuration: Lens Only
This lens follows the "you get what you pay for" mantra. I started with the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG Macro Lens with built in motor for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, as my entry into a stronger zoom lens. One advantage of the f/4-5.6 is the faster speed at farther zoom, however, when really put to use that advantage is not as clear. I've been using these to catch graduation events, auditorium snapshots, and other people-type activities. Between the two, this Sigma Contemporary lens fairs better, but at 3x the cost. The f/4-5.6 lens is a really good lens. for the price, it is unbeatable, and the open aperture is a benefit, especially indoors. It starts to get soft to my eye past 225mm, and without a tripod you can't count on reliable shots at those distances. However, it's also a little lighter weight, especially during carry or if hung around the neck. The Contemporary lens is stiff, heavy, and versatile. The optical stabilization makes a noted difference, and with care, distance shots can be made decent without a tripod. It is more crisp when zoomed in far than the other. It does require silly-high iso settings to adjust for the slower aperture. This becomes the compromise - slightly more noise vs clarity of the subject. I'm seeing that people I'm send these pictures to notice focus and clarity more than they notice noise, so the compromise seems to favor this lens. The slower aperture precludes it from being my preferred lens for general walk-around or any other time I'm not anticipating the need for the strong zoom. For those times, Sigma's other lens in the Contemporary line has much more open glass and takes more vibrant pictures. Bottom line, for almost 3x the cost, you get a lens which is probably 2.5x as useful as the other sigma 300mm zoom. You're still paying a premium, but you can get more out of it. ... show more

  • Good all around lenses
Style: Nikon SLR Mount Configuration: Lens Only
Build quality is ok. Zoom might be stiff when lenses are new, zoom lock is also nice thing to prevent zoom creep when you walk with camera banging on your chest. AF is fast and quiet, though focus ring is tiny so is not handy if you like mastering focus on your own. AF in low light may result in premature shots though. Beside zoom range, acceptable distortion level is one of reason why those are good all around lenses. With such long zoom range, distortion is well controlled on most of focal length and noticeable only at the beginning 18-20mm. Sharpness of lenses is ok. 7-8mpx is the sharpest they can deliver according to DXO and I feel same. This is more than enough for enthusiast photography and also enough to store photos for memories. Though, doing +2 +3 sharpness in ViewNX or in in-camera setting you can achieve sharpness of more expensive lenses if you shoot jpeg only. OS does not seem to be revolutionary, though not many blurry photos so far. CA does not bother much, though my camera is constantly set to aperture priority with F8. It seems the cheapest option on market vs Nikkor 18-300mm, Tamron 16-300mm. So after studying all reviews of competitor lenses I did not notice features making me buy more expensive Tamron/Nikkor vs over Sigma, so Sigma was win for me. Internal flash should not be used on short focal length as there will be shadow at beneath, also my personal feeling those zoom lenses not good for flash photography at all, due to high tendency to flare/ghosting, so keep it in mind. Lenses cap is horrendous, it is made out of rough plastic and actually scratches filter ring from inside. So if you know good alternative please let me know. Overall, I would recommend them to anyone who bought DSLR camera and few lenses, but end up shooting on cell phone when traveling, as switching lenses is boring, time consuming, camera bag gets bigger and heavier and etc. You can safely sell anything you have and just have this lenses full time on camera. ... show more
