  • Basic zoom lens, for cheap
What can you say? I bought this as a cheap back up lens. This is a basic, no-frills, inexpensive lens. It is well-made, but picture sharpness is hit or miss, it seems. I am an amateur, so I can't tell if there is any distortion at either end of the zoom range, or in the middle. I haven't seen any significant chromatic aberration yet, but I expect there to be some considering how cheap this is. The auto-focus has difficulty in dim light and bright (sun) light. I wouldn't say it is better or worse than the kit lens that came with my XSi (450D)...but, that lens has the benefit of IS (image stabilization), which the Sigma 18-50 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC does not. If you are on a tight budget, this may be for you, otherwise, steer clear. There are other, better lenses out there (but they will cost you more). By the way, it does come with a small lens hood. ... show more

  • Used for IR photography
Bought this lens because it was less than $100 and works in the IR spectrum without hotspot. As with any lens in IR, you may need to use live view to focus given the focus shift of the given wavelength. At 18mm, focusing without the live view, it is spot on. At 50mm however, live view is required. It isn't as sharp compared to my other $400 sigma lenses, but for IR work, it imparts a certain feeling to the picture that i rather like. Otherwise, great lens for the price. ... show more

  • AMAZING Zoom Lens at a fraction of the cost of much more expensive versions...
I spent a lot of time trying to decide if I should spend 100's on a Canon lens or less than 100 on this Sigma lens. After I did my homework, I learned that Sigma is a very reputable lens manufacturer and most of the reviews I read on the internet were very positive. I originally wanted this for my full frame Canon 5D Mark IV, but after I received it, I learned that it is actually an EF-S compatible lens. No problem for me because I use it with my Canon 4000D/T100 and it is now my lens of choice for this APS-C crop size camera. PROS: - the cost (a LOT of quality for the money). - quality (feels great in the hand with a metal lens mounting ring instead of cheap plastic). - very "contrasty" with wonderful 'inky-black' blacks. - smooth focus rings - takes very clear, crisp images. - AF/MF switch CONS: - like all telephoto zoom lens with a low mm setting, in the 18mm setting, there is some "fish-eye" diffraction, but you can correct this in post-processing. I've taken some gorgeous panorama images in the setting - see attached picture. ... show more

  • Inexpensive Sigma Lens
I purchased this lens because of is low price. I recently purchased a Canon 7D and wanted a wide angle lens but really couldnt afford good glass. This lens gets the wide shots but it's not the sharpest.(nor is it close.) I am happy witht he lens based on my current need for a wide angle and it's super low price. As soon as I get the funds I will be upgrading. Good for now. ... show more

  • Great for the price
I saw some reviews that showed that this lens was sharper than the stock Canon 18-50mm and that is why I got this. Has noticeable chromatic aberration as a trade off though. Feels sturdy, has rubber on the grip where you turn the lens, feels of good build quality. Got some of my best images with this image. Most definitely used this more than the 50mm just because of the zoom convenience. ... show more

  • Hunts continuously
Nice lens, looks like wasn't used much. I tested it on my Canon 40D and Rebel in AF mode and it hunts continuously so I could not used a cpl filter. So pictures were not good. But, in manual mode, it works fine, not real good resolution tho. For the cheap price, I could understand why. I'm not returning it because it becomes perfect in my in bin as paper weight. ... show more
