Top Amazon Reviews

 • Doesn't work in Glocks without modification
Color: .40 S&W
First of all, I think that Sightmark Boresights are well made quality products & if that was all you had to be concerned with, then this would be a 5 star review. I have 3 other boresights in 380, 9mm & 45 Auto that I have been very happy with, so I ordered the 40 S&W without too much research. If i had read more reviews, I would have been aware of some of the issues with Glocks. Anyway, here are the problems that I experienced. #1: The laser would always point high & to the right. This is a result of the ejector impacting the boresight & causing it to skew in that direction when the slide is closed. I think that there are other guns besides the Glock that have this issue & that sightmark is probably aware of it, but I couldn't find any warnings on their site that it should be a consideration before ordering. I could have returned the boresight for a refund, but I'm kinda stubborn & I decided that I could find a way to make it work & I did. The solution was to file away enough metal from one side of the end of the boresight to clear the ejector which I did & that took care of the ejector issue. This required some care because you need to leave a large enough smooth flat face on the boresight to mate with the slide when it is forward. The end of the boresight where the ejector was hitting had a diameter of 0.327". I filed a flat on one side & removed about 0.037" which just clears the ejector. Once I did that and inserted the boresight with the flat facing the ejector, the laser stayed centered when the slide was closed. Once the ejector issue was resolved, I tackled the 2nd problem. The Glock & other guns have loose tolerances that increase reliability & also may decrease accuracy somewhat. The Diameter of a 40 S&W cartridge is about 0.420". The chamber on my G27 has a diameter of about 0.428" . The boresight diameter for the chamber section is the same as that 40 S&W at about 0.42". That makes for a loose fit for the boresight & could cause some minor inaccuracy. Realistically, it could be probably ignored, but I like to solve problems (even it it really doesn't matter), so I had some very thin (0.003") aluminum tape & I cut a strip & wound it 360° around the barrel of the boresight to increase the diameter to 0.428" & a nice snug fit in the chamber. I realize that not everyone will want to do all this, but it was fun for me & now I have a boresight that works just great. So to recap. 5 stars for the quality product & 1 star for ease of use, with a 3 star result. ... show more

 • A wondeful concept with a major design defect which Sightmark NEEDS to fix.
Color: .40 S&W
The problem with this device is that it is not shaped like an actual round (as it needs to be). In many models of sidearms, the extractor mechanism will push this off of center (for example, the Springfield XD and XDm series). I confirmed that my laser was, in fact, straight (relative to the body of the device), before using it. I discovered that the point emitted by this was far, far to the right of the factory-default aim point. A test firing proved that this was incorrect, and that the factory sight location was pretty close to spot-on. Ideally, this device should have a "rim" around the rear edge, just as a bullet does. This would allow the round to be held properly, as a bullet's casing is, in pretty much any weapon around. Without that, the extractor tend to put pressure on something which (if it were a real bullet) would be up against a hard surface, but in this case, is "in air" and allows the boresight "round" to be pushed off-center (due to the necessary clearance in the barrel, some ability to "tip" will always be present). There may be a means to "finesse" this to point ahead... several people have mentioned this in their own comment here. I have not yet found that for my own weapon, however. Better yet, the vendor ought to provide a replacement rear cap which actually reflects the physical form of a real casing. This would NOT be difficult to do, and should be part of the design. It's hard for me to imagine why they did otherwise, frankly... except perhaps to save a few pennies on the cost of metal? It's a GREAT concept, and for some weapons it works beautifully... but for those with an extraction system which applies side pressure to the round when loaded, it's not very useful. My goal is to replace the end cap with a properly shaped one... or to put a sleeve over that end cap (perhaps made from an actual casing?). That should make this fully functional. But Sightmark ought to be the one to do that FOR us, shouldn't they? ... show more

 • Wasted money
Color: .40 S&W
I purchased this as a means for checking sights on several pistols I would do some work on. I'm an armorer for a law enforcement unit that doesn't often go out to qualify, and I don't have the luxury of a range at the same location as I'd be working. Absolutely none of the guns "sighted" in with the sightmark were anywhere near on target, and I am positive it wasn't shooter error. After a short time, it also quit working. New batteries did not fix the issue. I had similar issues with their 9mm version, but had thought it a fluke since there had been such great review. I would not recommend this product for anyone staking life on their firearm. ... show more

 • Not centered, and VERY difficult to return.
Color: .40 S&W
This has to do one thing only, predictably and consistently shine a laser on center from a .40 bore. This does not do that, it's off center, and therefore utterly useless. Interestingly I bought a 9mm laser at the same time from another company, Midten, for about $10 less. That sighter manages to do exactly what it needs to. Making this more frustrating, returning the thing is not automatic. For whatever reason there's no actual option to return it... Instead, I had to waste 25 minutes in a chat conversation with someone asking me if the batteries were in right and if I reset my sights to the laser. No, I did not, because doing so would have me shooting two lanes over. Not sure why they made the return so difficult, but it now has me questioning future Amazon purchases in general. Standing by their products is kinda their only value prop at this point, everybody can get things to me in 2-4 days per the new prime standard. Have to say this whole experience left a bad taste. And for such a small and relatively inexpensive item. SMH. ... show more
