A Must For Dresden Fans
Format: Hardcover
Harry came for an extra visit this year. Which makes me very happy. I miss my friend while awaiting his yearly arrival. But this year, he was able to sneak in an extra one. Andw hy not? He IS a wizard after all... The new Harry Dresden collection of short stories, SIDE JOBS, is a must for all Dresden fans. Over the years, Jim Butcher has been sprinkling Harry shorts into various compendiums or posting them on his website, albeit less frequently than we would like. But we fans of Harry will most definitely take what we can get. SIDE JOBS pulls all these little extras together in one convenient, complete package, and adds a special treat: "Aftermath". "Aftermath" is a novella which takes place immediately following the end of the most recent Dresden novel, CHANGES. It does not answer any of the big questions, but it does show us how grim the situation actually is. In total, SIDE JOB contains 11 stories, in the following chronological order: "A Restoration of Faith," before the first book, Storm Front (1). The first Harry story Jim Butcher ever wrote. It isn't perfect, but it does give us some insights into Harry, and it shows us how some beloved characters first met. "Vignette," between Death Masks (5) and Blood Rites (6). A conversation between Harry and Bob. "Something Borrowed," between Dead Beat (7) and Proven Guilty (8). Harry is rude to an evil stepmother, but still makes sure that everyone gets to the church on time. "It's My Birthday, Too," between White Knight (9) and Small Favor (10). It's Thomas's birthday, and Harry is determined to celebrate it with him. But vampires of the Black Court have other ideas. "Heorot," between White Knight (9) and Small Favor (10). Mac asks for Harry's help. Harry teams with Miss Gard, and we learn more about this mysterious woman. "Day Off," between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11). This is Jim and Harry's first attempt at a comic story. All Harry wants is a day off with Anastasia. But the magical realm, from disciples of Slytherin to psychic fleas, will not leave Harry alone. "Backup," between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11). Thomas works hard to protect his little brother, without Harry ever knowing about it. "The Warrior," between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11). Michael may still be retired, but that does not mean he isn't in danger. "Last Call," between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11). Mac's beer is suddenly starting riots, and Harry must thwart the supernatural cause. "Love Hurts," between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11). Couples are literally loving each other to death. Will Harry and Murphy survive the effects? "Aftermath," after Changes (13). With Harry gone, Karin Murphy must save the day. I found all of the stories in SIDE JOBS to be fun and entertaining, but you must be a Dresden fan to appreciate them. This is not a book that you can pick up cold; you need to at least be familiar with the Dresden-verse to appreciate them. But if you are a die-hard Dresden fan, then this book is for you. Most of what we love about Jim and Harry is here: the great stories, the droll, acerbic wit, the fast-paced action. SIDE JOBS also gives us some one on one time with other favorite characters - Thomas, Michael, Karin, the Alphas, Mac, Miss Gard are each featured prominently in at least one of these tales. A few are even told from perspectives other than Harry's. We get to see more of what makes these characters tick, and that adds to the enjoyment. Overall, if you love Harry Dresden and Jim Butcher, then run, don't walk, to get a copy of SIDE JOBS. It will help fill the gap while awaiting Harry's next visit in April 2011. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A series of books I would recommend to anyone reading fantasy type books.
Format: Audiobook
I totally LOVE the Dresden files. I'm sad I am complete with what is currently out. I was so into the story that I couldn't start another audio book for like 2 weeks. The books are very well written. Funny. Adventurous. Sad. Life changing. And ... I live about an hour out of Chicago, so it is fun for him to go to differnt places and my brains will go "I know where that place is!!!" lol Since I have discovered audiobooks, it STILL amazes me how much different a book feels while listening instead of reading. I drive 75 miles a day, 5 days a week. Audiobooks help more than music to keep my road rage down. lol I'm horrible at book reviews on the story. I hear it. I register it. I remember the feelings and basic story. I SUCK at details and remember anything more than whether I enjoyed it. Sucked in high school. And for book reviews. However, I did not find a Dresden book I didn't enjoy by the end. I did enjoy the Side Jobs though because it was short stories in between the larger stories of the main series. These were a refreshing break to the heaviness of where the main story progresses near the last half a dozen books or so. And it brought back some of the characters lost throughout the main story line. The Dresden books are narrated by James Marsters. (Spike from the vampire killing popular TV series) He is an AWESOME narrater. I would NEVER pass up a book he narrated. He is easy to listen to. Speaks clearly enough to understand even when distracted by other stupid drivers. But, I have to say I miss his accent from Spike. However I was not disappointed, in the Dresden files Harry ownes a skull that in inhabited by a spirit ... the first time I heard Bob speak I said out loud to no one "There is our Spike!!" lol

Dresden Appetizers
Format: Kindle
I really enjoyed this collection. It is awesome that all of the stories are packaged together. Best of all Butcher gives introductions to each one. I love hearing about how each story came together. Let me review each one individually. 1. A Restoration of Faith: (THREE STARS) Takes place Before Storm Front This was written before Storm Front was published. It isn't very good but it is an interesting look into the world that Butcher was building. It is decent but more of a fascinating look behind the curtain than great story. 2. Vignette: (FOUR STARS) Between Death Masks and Blood Rites This is very short. It is Harry trying to decide how to word an ad. Even though it is short is does exactly what it sets out to do. Bob is in it as well so that is a plus! 3.Something Borrowed: (FIVE STARS) Between Dead Beat and Proven Guilty I really liked this one. It is a short story but a lot of story is packed in here. It is charming and funny. It shows you a side of Harry and what he is like with some of his friends that aren't given the spotlight to often. Most impressive about this one to me is that a surprising amount of tension is built up. The finale had me smiling and on the edge of my seat. 4. It's My Birthday, Too: (THREE STARS) Between White Night and Small Favor This one is a little silly for my taste. It does a good job of furthering the bond between Harry and Thomas. The plot of Role Playing Revenge in a mall is just the filler. Nothing to bad about this one though. It is fun and forgettable. 5. Heorot: (THREE STARS) Between White Night and Small Favor I had the same problem with this one as I did Birthday. It is just so silly it is hard trying to take it semi serious. Still some good character interactions take place. It gives you some face time with a minor character that gets more interesting after reading this one. Still fun but forgettable. 6. Day Off: (FIVE STARS) Between Small Favor and Turn Coat Day Off is pure fun. Many threads building to a crescendo that is quite funny. I think Butcher loves torturing Harry. I enjoy reading Butcher torturing Harry so this story rocks. 7. Backup: (FIVE STARS) Between Small Favor and Turn Coat Backup is my second favorite story in Side Jobs. It is written from the perspective of Thomas and gives some truly fascinating information about what it means to be a vampire of the White Court. The best is the story that Thomas has been involved with a war that he can't even tell Harry about. This was an incredible entertaining read. It makes a character I already liked and gives him even more layers. 8. The Warrior: (FIVE STARS) Between Small Favor and Turn Coat The Warrior is the best story contained in Side Jobs. Heck it is one of the best Dresden Files stories ever. After I was done reading it I couldn't get it out of my mind. It has all the elements that keep me coming back to this series and does them all very well. Michael is in it so I liked it from the word go. Do yourself a favor and don't read Butcher's introduction to the story until you have finished it. This is a story so entertaining it reminds me why I love to read so much! 9. Last Call: (THREE STARS) Between Small Favor and Turn Coat Last Call is pretty silly but it has Harry and Murphy teaming up saving it. Story is rather forgettable. This was my least favorite of the bunch. 10. Love Hurts: (FOUR STARS) Between Turn Coat and Changes This one is very similar to Last Call. Though the Murphy and Harry story line is better. This one had me smiling from ear to ear as I turned the pages. The Vampire's plan is very cool in a Dresden crazy kind of way. 11. Aftermath: (FOUR STARS) Shortly after the end of Changes I read Aftermath as soon as I got done reading Changes. It doesn't do much to drive the story forward but what can you expect? Butcher wasn't going to spoil the cliffhanger in a short story. The thing I liked most about Aftermath is hearing Murphy work through some issues that are plauging her. Trying to be Dresden as she puts the clues together. The stuff I didn't care for was the mystery was rather tedious. Good but not Great.

Quells hunger until our next meal
Format: Hardcover
There are two reasons for reading this book. The first is that all the previous Harry Dresden short stories are gathered together in one place, including the first, apparently unpublished short story that comes before Storm Front and whose relatively lesser qualities betray its status as one of Butcher's first stories. And yet it also contains some very good sections and passages. Putting this story first gives a real feel for how Butcher has grown as a writer, and would probably be inspiring to any novice writers out there. But you have "Vignette," "Something Borrowed" (in which Harry for once is intentionally, and quite effectively, rude to a wicked stepmother), "It's my birthday too," "Heorot," "Day off" (the only genuinely comedic Dresden work), "Backup," "The Warrior," (perhaps the most philosophical of the Dresden works), "Last Call," and "Love Hurts." Each is marked by the books which bracket it and they come in chronological order. Along the way it's not hard to be reminded of Butcher's penchant for homage to his favorite stories, films, and TV shows, as well as his gift for creating effective scenes of tension between main characters. Pretty much everyone in Dresden's Chicago appears at one time or another, and some side plots and characters get fleshed out in these stories in ways that would be hard to duplicate in the main novels. The second reason for reading this book is, of course, the final story in the book. "Aftermath" takes place shortly after the end of "Changes," a book certain to win the World Fantasy Award for Most Apt Title. There are no spoilers in this review, but it is probably influenced by the peculiar fact pattern: due to a death in the family of a close friend, I had taken Monday off from work, and somebody at the post office screwed up and delivered my copy one day early. Perhaps the coincidence between external loss and Harry Dresden's situation at the end of "Changes" colored my appreciation, but I was actually kind of grateful for this story. It's at one and the same time unusually interesting and deeply unsatisfying, a change of pace and a coy hinting at future directions -- much in the manner of a funeral, I realize. Butcher carries on the narrative from a wholly unexpected point of view, which I found both refreshing and convincing. He answers few of my questions - well, none, actually - while raising still more. What I valued about this little intermezzo was the way it deepened some of the characters in the Dresden universe, central and peripheral, hero and villain. It doesn't really satify my hunger for the next novel, yet it's a healthy dissatisfaction after a worthwhile read. These are all fun stories, sometimes comedic, sometimes thoughtful, and at the end rather wistful. Thanks, Mr. Butcher. You made one rather bad day a little better.

Good way to see the evolution of Harry
Format: Kindle
I had to do an average of the stories I read here which came to 4.5 stars, which is pretty darn great for me. I am a total Dresden junky, love me some Harry! Each story gave me another side of Harry, in some instances a side I may not have had a chance to see before since the situation occurred outside the main novels. There was not one story I would give less than a three and most were at at least a four. The writing was always tight, even if the first story was a little less detailed, it was still well worth the time. Each story seamlessly flowed into the next advancing and opening the story along with the characters. There were three stories which I enjoyed more than others and gave five stars. The first story was It's My Birthday, Too which revolved around Harry's half brother and the fact that Harry really does not know how to deal with family issues. I liked this one because it shows how close Thomas and Harry have grown since finding out about each other. It's not every day you discover the only other family you have is a vampire. Thomas is helping one of his employees with a LARPing group at the mall, Harry is delivering his gift, and something very bad is about to happen. My second favorite story was The Warrior, which had the retired knight Michael in it. When Michael and the knights were first introduced I was very happy to see them. Here was something I had never seen before and some very interesting people. Someone seems to be targeting Michael and his family, sending pictures of them to Harry as a warning. While Harry tries to find out who is after the ex-knight, Michael does not fear for himself but his family. What this person wants could cause more trouble than solve it. The final favorite in this anthology of good stories was Last Call. Finally a chance to get a closer look at Mac. A psychic compulsion is placed on the crates containing his beer which of course transfers to the beer itself. Harry was just planning on having a beer and a steak sandwich but finds utter chaos and a plot that needs to be solved before all hell breaks lose. All I can really say is that it is Harry Dresden and I love Harry in all his sarcastic, gloomy, sad sack, wizardly ways. If you have enjoyed the Dresden Files in the past this will only make you want more.

No Big Answers, Lots of Neat Perspectives
Format: Kindle
First things first: if you're picking this up because you're hoping that the included novella, _Aftermath_, will answer the huge cliffhanger at the end of Changes: it doesn't, not clearly. No big answers here (though many of the stories, including Aftermath, will include plenty of small details to please and tease dedicated fans). Instead, this collection is a set of alternate perspectives: stories from the viewpoint of Thomas or Murphy, a story that shows us Harry when he was just starting out as a detective, a story that focuses on Harry when he's *not* working on a case and just trying to take a day off, a story that focuses on the Carpenter family, so forth. Butcher includes a paragraph or two of commentary at the head of each story, so we get to find out what *his* perspective is on each of the stories, too. A fair number of them were initially written for theme anthologies, so there's a certain amount of "Harry Dresden Does a Wedding Story" or "Harry Dresden Does a Birthday Story" going on, but each stands on its own merits, and fans of the series will be very satisfied with what they get here (as long as they aren't looking for answers to major plot arcs). In fact, I'd go so far as to call this a "must read" for dedicated fans of the Dresden books: not only does each story have plenty of the action, comedy, and "Crowning Moments of Awesome" that have made the series so successful to date, but dedicated fans will find answers too all kinds of minor side puzzles that Butcher hasn't necessarily addressed head-on in the novels (like more information about Gard's true nature). That said, if you've read all the other stories in here already and are picking this up just for _Aftermath_ because you want answers to what happened after _Changes_, you won't get clear ones; _Aftermath_ is told from Murphy's perspective, not Harry's, and it's more about how Murphy personally processes the, well, aftermath of the events in that book. While we do get a few more pieces of the puzzle, it looks like we'll have to wait for the next full novel, Ghost Story, before we see the whole picture. I would not recommend this anthology as a starting place for new readers to the series; instead, start with either Storm Front, the first full novel, or Welcome to the Jungle, a graphic novel set before the events of Storm Front. Reading this collection first would spoil pretty much every major surprise in the series to date, so yeah, don't do that. Alternatively, you could pick this collection up and then flip back and forth between it and the novels, reading in proper sequence. If you want to do that, here's a list of the stories in this volume, in chronological order: A Restoration of Faith...(before the first book, Storm Front) Vignette.......................Between Death Masks (5) and Blood Rites (6) Something Borrowed.......Between Dead Beat (7) and Proven Guilty (8) It's My Birthday, Too.....Between White Knight (9) and Small Favor (10) Heorot..........................Between White Knight (9) and Small Favor (10) Day Off.........................Between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11) Backup..........................Between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11) The Warrior...................Between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11) Last Call.....................Between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11) Love Hurts....................Between Small Favor (10) and Turn Coat (11) Aftermath.....................After Changes

if you're looking for a fix between full-length novels...
Format: Kindle
Well, now I have officially read all the published Dresden Files books and have to wait for the next one like everyone else. That makes me kind of sad. Thankfully, Jim Butcher writes quickly! I had an interesting perspective on this book, since I've read up through Skin Game but the stories in this book only covered up to the period between Changes and Ghost Story (don't read this if you haven't read at least through Changes, or else follow the Wikipedia guide for this book, which tells you when each of the stories takes place). I wouldn't say that any of these stories really added a lot to the overall progression of the series arc, though if you read them in chronological order along with the rest of the books in the series, you might get a few early hints about things to come (especially with regards to the Fomorians who show up after Changes). By and large, these stand outside the main sequence of the series -- probably because Butcher wrote a heck of a lot of them in response to requests for anthology pieces (many with predetermined themes). As I was reading these stories, I realized that I like the longer format of the novels -- complete with bits and pieces of series arc -- better than shorter pieces. I like the hints of connection to something larger, the detailed investigations, the final battles. I always appreciated the funny bits in the novels, and that element was still here in the stories (and was sometimes the main focus, in fact), but I guess I want a little more depth. That's not a problem with the writing, by any means; it's a feature of the short story format in general, and probably why I tend to read more full-length fantasy novels than anything else. I'm guessing that's why my favorite one was "Aftermath," which is actually told from Murphy's point of view. She gathers allies and does an investigation and has to draw upon her resources and information she's gleaned from Dresden over years of working with him. Plus, we get a sense of what is going on in the world at large after the events of Changes. The structure of that one is a little more like the longer novels, at any rate. That's not to say I didn't find these fun, because I did. Harry is still Harry, complete with a smart mouth (some of what he said in the story about Billy's and Georgia's wedding was going a little far, even for Harry...) and a desire to do the right thing. The writing is interesting to see. I read the first 15 books in a very short period of time. While we saw a progression in Butcher's writing skills in those books (with the series really picking up around book 3), it's perhaps even more dramatic here. The first story *is* a little rough; Butcher has hit his stride in the later pieces. There was definitely enough here to remind me of the novels I love, that I wanted to keep reading. A couple of little things bothered me. First, two of these stories were about Georgia (a recurring character who also happens to be a werewolf) getting kidnapped from her own apartment and two involved Murphy being under the influence of a love spell or potion. Second, while I thought, overall, that the stories from Thomas's and Murphy's points of view were good, Murphy's internal thoughts were quite similar to what Dresden's would have been. Only instead of focusing on being tall like Harry is, Murphy was rather fixated on being short -- she was having the same sorts of thoughts about herself that Dresden always had about her. This may be a bias on the author's part -- he was similarly fixated on size in the Codex Alera books. I guess it was just more noticeable here because it got repeated a lot due to the short story format. However, I will say that the action/fight scenes in "Aftermath" are some of the best ones in the books. I know nothing about martial arts, guns, etc., but the action seemed entirely reasonable based on the circumstances. I felt like Butcher had really thought through the battle mechanics beforehand. This book is really more for Dresden Files fans than for anyone else. I would not recommend it as a starting point for the series. You'll learn a lot more about the wizards' White Council, vampires, werewolves, the Fae, recurring characters, and more through the full-length novels. But once you are familiar with those elements, if you want more and aren't patient enough to wait for novel #16, this collection should be a fun way to pass the time. While I was a little annoyed by one or two aspects, overall, I'm glad I bought this book and I'm looking forward to more novels and stories in the Dresden universe.

Great Dresden Shorts
Format: Kindle
I adore the wit and snark level of the Dresdenverse as a whole! The short stories are a fun opportunity to see from another character's perspective. Warrior brought some much needed closure to a part of the series for me, and I'm always pleased to get more Carpenter family content. I love that JB gives us these stories that flesh out the main series, fill in gaps, and tide us over to the next book. Having them all in one place is fantastic.
