  • Kayla and the Devil
Kayla's life should have been amazing, she's rich, beautiful and doing well in college. Unfortunately for Kayla her life is not going well, she no longer has any friends, men avoid her and even her stalker is now repulsed by her. She's baffled over the change, that is until she meets the devil who explains this is payback for something she did in high school. He has a deal for her that will lift the shunning spell but to honour the deal she must take an innocent life and she will be doomed to enter Hell whatever she decides to do. She has a week to complete the task and to help, the devil partially lifts the shunning spell and sends her some interesting helpers to keep her motivated. Kayla looks for ways to both complete the task or work around the deal, enlisting her ex-stalker who seems to be the only person she can trust at the moment. Does she have it to take an innocent life or will she be destined to live on the periphery of society as a social leper. Bryan Smiths books always tend to be fun and this was no exception. The premise is interesting and there are several ways in which Kayla tries to work around the deal to trick the devil. The story itself is very straightforward, the writing flowed well and it was an easy, uncomplicated read to get through. Kayla is at first very unlikable, she's spoiled, cruel and has a razor sharp tongue that she uses all too frequently. Her shunning period didn't seem to teach her too much and when the spell was partially lifted she was only too happy to put people down as she'd done before. I did like that there was growth with her character although much of it came at the end and it was frustrating at times to see her treat people so abominably who were going out of their way to help her. Lee, her ex-stalker, was a great character that I wish had been in more of the book. His relationship with Kayla was quite one-sided, she took advantage of him again and again but I liked that he held her more accountable and that his actions towards the end of the book had such a profound affect on her. Overall an uncomplicated, fun read that is well worth the read. ... show more

  • Honest Review
I've never heard of Bitter Ale Press before I found this book (ebook) and it looks like it's just an invented publishing house so the author could self-publish but not look like he's self-publishing, though it shows. This book could have used some fine editing. There are words missing from the text and while you can figure out what the author is trying to say, its sloppy and distracting. Plot editing and some finessing of the story would have come in handy as well. The story revolves around the character named Kayla, who is a college student who has recently been shunned by everyone. Turns out the Devil is behind this and she must make a deal with him to get out of it. Obviously there is more to it, but I'm not going to give away the plot here. Kayla is an underdeveloped character; one you really don't care about, and you kind of actually want her to end up in hell. Whenever you do a "deal with the devil" story, you have to either present it as a morality tale of a bad person getting what's owed them, or a sympathetic story where the character is worthy of redemption. This book is neither. Kayla is actually just a rotten individual and you'll find little to empathize with in her. I found the writing in this book to be almost juvenile. I'm not offended by profanity at all, but it's overused in this book...so much so that it becomes annoying. Have you ever been in a public place where a teenager is using the F-bomb every other word because he thinks he's cool? It's like that. The sex in this book has that sort of "trying to be seamy" feel to it but it falls short. I was expecting the book to be written by a teenage boy, given the clumsy attempts to present erotic parts of this book. The inclusion of infamous historical characters was fun, but the inclusion of Jack the Ripper and Elizabeth Bathory seemed random to me. It was like the author thought their inclusion would add historical depth to this novel, but it came off as more of a stretch. When Bathory was introduced, the main character explains her crimes in a paragraph. It would have been far more effective to explain who she was over time...or let the main character discover who she was rather than an blunt paragraph where the main character just happens to know the full story of Bathory. I hate to use the word again, but it came off as clumsy. This book isn't all bad. It's certainly entertaining. The chapters are short and you can definitely blow through the book quickly. The pacing was fast. I guess my final thought is that the "deal with the devil" story has been done before, and I don't know that this novel takes that different of an approach to it. ... show more

  • A devilishly good time :)
Like some of you, maybe you remember when you read "Depraved" by Bryan D Smith -- I do. Shocking, gory, and definitely not for the faint of heart-- it was a style that was so dark, it was disturbing to your senses. Kayla and the Devil is not of that nature. As some other people have described-- it's urban fantasy with a demonic twist. -It's definitely dark-- but people who were *not* a fan of his disturbing style reading "Depraved", may want to check this out because it's different. -People who LOVE the splatterpunk cannibalistic style in *everything* they read, may find some disappointment with "Kayla" only in that it's not the same violent tone as "Depraved"-- BUT- I don't think anyone who goes into this knowing "Smith's" style will be disappointed with the book at all. His writing is as solid and good as ever. Doesn't matter what he's writing- based on this genre move. It's a really fun read. Kayla did take a few pages to warm up to-- she's the kind of girl that generally, you don't like to even be around because she's a grade A manipulative little (but pretty) bully- and that comes off very well and clear from the book. She's a college girl with the foulest mouth-- that would be similar to how the child of an insulted trucker and a ticked off sailer would sound. Seriously, the "eff" word is used like it's mouth candy (great stuff). So, while it centers around a college girl, this is in no way a "YA/young adult" kind of book-- if parents are looking the book over and wondering if their teenager might like it... Oh, they probably will- but will *you* like that *they* like it? That's up to you. I eagerly await the sequel to the book. She's already encountered the Devil, The Ripper, and Bathory. What's next for Kayla from here? I can't wait to find out. ... show more
