A Conspiracy in Aspen Creek for Anna and Charles Brings Action and Suspense!

Anything by this author is a cancel all appointments, ignore all chores, take the phone off the hook, and settle in for a one-sitting read. The addiction is real and well-earned. This was another fabulous outing for Charles and Anna. Burn Bright is the fifth of the Alpha & Omega series, but also the #15 of the Mercy Thompson world. Personally, I do not read the two series or think of them as separate, but rather just two sides of the same coin. And, I think it works best that way as both series have parallel plots. Burn Bright takes place immediately after the events of the Mercy Thompson, Silence Fallen. However, it is also versatile in that a reader can probably get away with only reading one series or the other if that is their preference. Charles has been left in charge of the Aspen Creek Pack while Bran goes to help rescue Mercy. He is not pleased with this state of affairs and then he takes a distress call from one of his da's wilding wolves- strangers on their lands and a traitor in their midst. I enjoyed the action and suspense as Charles and Anna work to figure out what is going on and prevent an insidious plot even while the story highlights just how far they have come as a mated pair and individuals. Anna is faced with the demons of her past and Charles with letting her be who she is without smothering her and respecting her as his equal partner and not just his mate needing protection. Another great piece was the spotlight on Bran's cranky, haughty mate, Leah. She is given a prominent role and, yes, I'm going to say it, I loved it. What this book revealed about Leah, and even Bran, was as captivating as the exciting parts. The dynamics between Leah and Charles as step-family and even a small peek into Leah's history particularly with Mercy was engaging. Oh, and Charles and Anna are surrounded by the fabulous cast of recurring color and quirky minor characters in Aspen Creek and some great new ones- Asil the Moor, Tag, Sage, and so many others. All are one big crazy family and pack. And yet, it was tension-wrought as someone, known to them all, was a pack traitor and selling them out. As, with each new story, Patricia Briggs reveals more magic and legend- fae, witch, and werewolf in this case. That battle Anna and Charles fought to save the wolf was one of the best scenes. I don't think I breathed. There were several exciting moments and the end was a great climax. A new worthy enemy is revealed and left me eager for what is to come in the series. Some of the best Urban Fantasy out there and not to be missed by fans of the genre.

We're Back in Aspen Creek and I'm Here For It!

This review was originally posted on the Goldilox and the Three Weres blog. Burn Bright takes place just after the events in Silence Fallen. With the Marrok out of the country on a vacation after dealing with the ordeal with Mercy, Charles has taken up the temporary role as Alpha of the Aspen Creek pack and a phone call from one of his father's Wildlings leads him and Anna on an investigation that just escalates from there. I know I say this every time I read a book in these series, but I loved everything about this one! I read it pretty much in one sitting and I was hooked from the start. One of the things I've loved about the Alpha & Omega books is that we get to see a lot of the world because Charles and Anna are always traveling. This book felt like a throwback to the early Mercy books but with the A&O crew. We're finally back in Aspen Creek and this book delivers on feeding my curiosity about the members of the Marrok's pack. We know that the Aspen Creek Pack is full of wolves that are wounded and broken and who wouldn't survive in any other pack. But what I didn't realize it that Bran's pack held even more broken wolves called the Wildlings who are too damaged to even interact with the pack. They are such intriguing characters! I loved learning more about them as much as I did learning more about Tag, Asil, Sage, and Leah. Yeah. I just said Leah. If you would have told me that I would come to like and respect Leah after pretty much despising her character for the last fourteen or so books, I would have said you were crazy. But Briggs did the impossible. She may not have made me love Leah in this book, but I certainly respect her and even kind of like her now. We even got to learn more about Mercy's time in the pack which was interesting, as is everything with Mercy. One thing I noticed a lot in this book was the emphasis placed on the bonds between mates. Many of you may not know but Patricia Briggs lost her husband unexpectedly in 2017. This is the first book published since she lost him and it was clearly influenced by his loss. I loved that it focused heavily on the different matings and bonds of the characters, even the ones who have lost their mates. Burn Bright was dedicated to her husband and it really was a fitting tribute to the man who was her own mate and such a delightful man in real life. RIP Mike. This book was a real roller coaster of feelings for me. It made me laugh. It made me kind of tear up. And it had me on the edge of my seat a majority of the time reading it. The mystery was so good! I thought I had everything figured out and then I got hit out of left field with the reveal. I never saw it coming and all I can say is: Bravo, Patricia Briggs! Bravo! The events in this book have consequences for both series and I'm intrigued to see what it does to this world. Glad to be back in the Mercyverse with Charles and ...

Hello, Hello! Glad to be back in the Mercyverse with Charles and Anna again! It has been a while since Patricia Briggs gave us a new Alpha and Omega.... but better late than never, right? Burn Bright's plot is an interesting one. For once, Charles and Anna are with the pack in Aspen Creek instead of having to go somewhere else to "fix" a problem. Charles is in charge of the pack while Bran is out of the country. Then, a distress call comes from the mate of one of the wildings. The couple is under attack and they're asking for the pack's help. Soon, the danger is closer to home and Charles and Anna are in a race to find the answer to the question of Who's behind the attacks on the pack? So who are the wildings? The wildings are the more unstable and older werewolves who need/ have agreed to Bran's protection. They live in isolation from the rest of the pack. Some of them have a past full of pain and misery. There's a reason why Bran offers them sanctuary. However, if one becomes to too lost to his wolf then Bran won't hesitate to take care of the threat. Yet, this time, the threat comes from outsiders and since Bran is not available, Charles will have to deal with the mess. Anna and Charles's relationship keeps on moving forward. Their mate bond is a strong one. They complement each other. Despite Charles being what he is, he's never overprotective. He doesn't overshadow her either. Anna is becoming a much stronger werewolf. She's becoming much more comfortable with her Omega side. She's not a victim and she doesn't want anyone to see her that way. Brother Wolf as always is just great. He can be quite scary but he also brings some needed levity at times. Also, Patricia Briggs let us into a big revelation or at least it was to me. I'm pretty sure I was as clueless as Mercy was/is. Not sure if this information is going to affect the Mercy books. Why bring it up if there is no importance to it? Yet, I don't want Mercy to find out. I love how we get more details in regards to Mercy's upbringing. She was a force to be reckoned with and I'm glad Charles helped her in whatever way he could. Now to the whodunit part....I was with Charles with his suspicion but I was glad I was wrong. Nevertheless, it hurt to see the pack hurting with their losses. Another surprise was Leah, someone who I thought (and might still think) is not the best choice of mate for Bran. Yet, in this installment, she was much more tolerable and even useful. If you don't think so, ask Charles. Asil was one of my favorite secondary characters in Burn Bright. He can be funny but don't underestimate him. He can also be quite scary when he wants to be. He enjoys teasing Charles by using Anna but he loves Anna and would be there to protect her in a heartbeat. One last thing, the cover of Burn Bright is amazing. Certainly a winner. I do hope we don't have to wait three years for the next one and long live the Mercyverse. Cliffhanger: No 4/5 Fangs

Another PERFECT addition to the series!

The Alpha & Omega by Patricia Briggs is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series. Unfortunately, the books in this series releases every two or three years, so I treasure the books even more than I do with other series. Charles and Anna are one of my favorite couples and I always look forward to seeing their relationship develop. These two have come a very long way, and I love that the author gives us something new every book in regards to their personalities and their abilities. I will not go into detail about the plot because the blurb gives a perfect summary of it. The writing was great and easy to follow. The story had a very nice pacing and the author took her time to tell the story. "Ours, said Brother Wolf. She is perfect, our soul mate, our anchor, the reason we were created. So that we could be hers." In this book we are introduced to 'wildings': "They are the wild and the broken. The werewolves too damaged to live safely among their own kind." I loved these wildings a lot because they are very mysterious and have been around for hundreds of years. They have great knowledge about the world and other paranormal beings. Every side character added so much to the dynamic of the story. I loved the plot in this book and the case/mystery Charles, Anna and others had to solve. It was suspenseful, action-packed and had the perfect amount of magic. I haven't been disappointed by any of the books in this series yet, and I hope that Patricia will continue to deliver topnotch work. Burn Bright definitely satisfied my craving for this series, and it will hold me over for the next two/three year.

Burn Bright, Indeed: a really great read

In book #5 of the Alpha and Omega series, Charles acts as pack leader for the absent Bran while doing not only his regular job as enforcer, but also as caregiver for the wildlings; a disparate group who are too damaged to live with even the Marrok’s Aspen Creek pack known for its collection of near crazy and difficult werewolves. The wildlings live on the fringes of the pack so that Bran can still keep watch over them. Since apparently he has decided to take a vacation after helping with Mercy Thompson’s latest “adventure,” Charles and Anna are left to deal with the kidnapping of one of the strongest wildlings and to protect the rest from the same fate. Because Bran is away, they also have to deal with his mate, Leah, who often causes more trouble rather than helping. Someone or some group that Bran and Charles have been tracking has targeted these wildings specifically to do harm to Bran’s pack and those he controls. Thus far, the identity of this enemy has been elusive. Readers will have the usual joy of adventure and excitement in this story, but what amps it up even more, something is revealed about Mercy Thompson that I did not see coming and left me stunned! Fans of the series will likely feel the same way and have much to say about this revelation. Adding to that, it seems there is a traitor from within the pack whose identity is another shocker. Charles and Anna have several challenges once they, Leah, Asil, and Sage set out to check on and warn the other wildlings about the danger. Not only do these damaged wolves live remotely in difficult to access mountain wilderness, but they are volatile and take werewolf crazy to a whole new level. Anna’s calming abilities as an Omega can be problematic as well as helpful. She is still finding her footing as the pack wolf whisperer while Charles has to reign in his and Brother Wolf’s natural protective nature with her. Since Leah plays a large role in this story, more about her relationship with Bran is revealed. Readers often have wondered why they are together and this storyline offers more explanation. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover; it felt as if every page was riveting. I think this is my favorite Anna and Charles book which is saying something since this is one of my favorite series. Ms. Briggs's writing continues to bring much pleasure with her special talents to this urban fantasy world she has created. Fans will be well pleased with this story.

Leah shows up more often - Anna and Charles have to help the very damaged wolves

I have always enjoyed the Anna books differently from the Mercy ones. Mercy is a demigoddess and kind of a superhero surrounded by better superheroes. She's the Invisible Girl of the fantastic four. Anna is much more like me. She's kind and good. She fits Charles because they complement one another. He's the law enforcer and Anna is the compassionate one. In this story, they are called to care for the wildings. Bran is on vacation after Silence Fallen, so it's up to Charles to figure out what's going wrong and fix it. We get to see more of Leah in this book. She's kind of the burr under our saddle but she has good qualities. We understand her position better, and we get to see inside of the Marrok's heart. In previous books, we learned about his mother and father, plus his and Samuel's Change into werewolves. Now we get to delve deeper. SPOILERS A lot of people called out Patricia Briggs for having Mercy call herself a skinwalker or walker, because she was not truly a skinwalker. Skinwalkers are supposed to be evil. So in this story, we have an evil one. It was somewhat similar to Fair Game because there's a character (or characters) who is (are) not as they seem. I particularly liked the Sleeping Beauty stuff. I think one of the more enjoyable aspects of this book is seeing Anna express her power more overtly. In previous books, people want her for her innate attributes, but she doesn't get to be in the driver's seat. In this book, she does literally and figuratively get to spend more time in the driver's seat. And when she acts as a conduit, she's about to channel a whole bunch of power. It works out where the Marrok took his vacation. I hope that Leah and Charles' relationship will be stronger after this. I am interested in the yellow flowers that keep popping up. It reminds me of the single flower that shows up in Purgatory in Once Upon a Time. What is going on with those? Also, a son of Lugh is in this story. We see Beauclaire and know that he's much more than he seems. Same here - and we get a reference to Zee as well. As quite a large number of other people have mentioned, we uncover more information about Mercy. We already knew about the peanut butter incident, when Bran made Mercy's foster mother cry and Mercy made him pay for it. We get it in more detail this time around. And Charles kind of talks about sticking up for Mercy when she was younger. The music is interesting, not least because Bran is/was a bard. There's a reference in Fire Touched about maybe a bard being able to find the fae when they were hidden. There aren't too many actual bards left, so I wondered if Bran still has that ability. There's some magic uncovered that we haven't seen before, and I really enjoyed that part. It's a bit cryptic and non-offensive, carefully so, but the elementals that Charles gets to see (under the catch-all "spirits") play a part here, too.

Definitely worth the year wait and then some

Patricia Briggs stories never seizes to amaze me. Burn bright was no exception either. It’s one of those stories where you read and read and suddenly you’re at the last chapter and can’t help but wonder where the time went. A book that can capture my mind and interest that wholly is 100 % worth the wait. What made me fall in love with the cry wolf series is the dynamic and chemistry between Anna and Charles. I’ll admit that I was kind of hoping for more in that department with Burn Bright, especially after the last book with them discussing children. However, I’m not disappointed either. Having learned way back that romance is not Briggs main pursuit with her stories, I’m okay with the relationship and romance genre taking a backseat even if I’m addicted to it. It actually makes me more excited when the romantic scenes do happen and I did not have to worry of it lacking in Burn bright at all. There were Anna and Charles moments that absolutely turned me into pudding. Off course, Anna and Charles aren’t the only reason for why I love this series and this book. The whole pack dynamic and werewolf world is intriguing to say the least and I just adore Briggs imagination and writing style. She knows how to build the suspense and drama as well as keeping it light and funny in a perfect balance. I find myself fascinated of how complex and multicultural it all is, both cry wolf and the Mercy Thompson series, with all-ranging characters and personalities as well as settings. Authors like Briggs are a rare kind, sadly. As much as I enjoy this series, it’s just so heartbreaking that I now have to wait two years for the next book in the series. Although, as the saying goes, good things happen for those who wait.
