Description

Hazbin Hotel meets Crescent City in the second book in this otherworldly urban fantasy romance series from New York Times bestseller Piper CJ.The apocalypse begins with love and a lie... Marlow has spent most of her life believing the shadowy demon she loves isn't real. Not only is he the living, breathing Prince of Hell, but he is now in serious danger. Their reunion is cut short as Caliban remains in a vicious battle with a Phoenician goddess after Marlow's escape. To save him, Marlow must venture into her ancestors' domain for help―the Norse Pantheon―where shared blood is no guarantee of an alliance and the line between gods and beasts blurs.Major players from even more realms team up in the ever-growing war between Heaven and Hell, and it will be up to Marlow to determine friend from foe to get Caliban back and save her world as she knows it. No one said the games of gods would be easy, but Marlow is prepared to sacrifice everything to save the one she loves. For fans of Sarah J. • Love this series! Love Piper’s writing!
This is the only series I’ve read from Piper CJ but I really love her prose. She writes a really compelling story that doesn’t try too hard (IYKYK). If you enjoy the fantasy trend, her characters have far more depth, and actually feel like an independent thought, instead of a retelling of every other trope. This series is a bit of a world religions history lesson mixed in with romance and fantasy. I hope there’s another book coming to this series soon because she included a twist that I didn’t see coming and left me so conflicted. If you’re into fantasy but looking for something new and fresh, read it! *Also, I would not read this series if you don’t have an open mind. Piper includes characters that are non binary, sex workers and her writing is LGBTQIA friendly. The subject matter in this series also takes a critical look at Christianity and monotheism. ... show more

  • We finally know the shape of the problem
Format: Kindle
The concept for this series is fantastic. I love it, familiar and unfamiliar! Merit however is deeply frustrating in a way I won't fully understand until I reread a few times. I find her inability to grasp the situation she is DEEPLY frustrating in a way they undermines the intelligence that she has to have to be the person that she is. Religious trauma does not a multitude of sins cover. HOWEVER, the characters around her do their Jobs extremely well to the point that my frustration with our lead does not kill it for me. And she has her moments as well. Which clash so deeply with the moments where she is stupid in ways I cannot actually fathom. She gets it together in the end and I look forward to book 3 like you wouldn't believe. ... show more

  • An Absolute Banger From Piper CJ
Format: Kindle
Piper CJ has done it again!! This book was one of my absolute favorite reads of all time. The way Piper tells stories is absolutely masterful. I laughed out loud so many times with her clever and snarky dialogue. I cried and experienced the grief alongside the characters. I felt the hopelessness, the lack of information, the heavy weight on the shoulders of Marlow, as she deals with the consequences of denying the Prince’s existence for so long. Every single memory she experienced with her “imaginary friend” had to be seriously rewired in her brain, as she grappled with the information of who this man really is, and how coming to terms with it has a snowball effect on her current reality intertwining with multiple Pantheons. The portrayal of mental health issues are so relatable, as an ex catholic turned pagan. This was the perfect installment setting up the story, giving the reader more context, more secrets, more mysteries to be unraveled. Overall 12/10 book from one of the best authors of our generation. ... show more

  • Piper did it again!!! ❤️🔥
Format: Paperback
If you love reading books about multiple pantheons, with a strong FMC, and otherworldly experiences then READ THIS BOOK. I thought the first book was excellent, but Piper really outdid herself with this one!!! It was definitely hard to put down and the twists throughout had my jaw agape more than once!!! I would give this a 3/5 on the 🌶 scale. There are a few scenes that were a little triggering, but she gives ample notice in the foreword, so I was prepared. The book as a whole is engaging, irreverent, witty, and quite steamy. Cannot wait for the next one!!! ... show more

  • It was ok.
Format: Kindle
Meh. The first 50% felt like the same book but in a different language. Just her going on a journey to find her true love; except this time I felt like at one point I was drowning in alphabet soup. Unless you know the different gods, deities, etc. of multiple pantheons it gets very confusing. She does try her best to explain who each is, but I felt like my brain turned in to mush at one point trying to keep up. Now if you love all the different pantheons and such you might love this book! (Norse, Christian, Greek and Phoenician) I thought about DNF’ing because I felt like I was reading just to read it and not enjoying it. The last few chapters finally got me interested and I did feel for the FMC at the end. I really wish this was only 2 books. I’m on the fence if I’ll read the next. The plot twist at the end makes me what to know what happens, but also I don’t feel like going on another journey. I’ll decide once the next comes out. ... show more

  • 3.5 stars - good but not as good as the 1st in the series
Format: Paperback
I absolutely ADORED the 1st book in this series and as soon as I started it, I was pulled right in. It took me until about halfway into this book to start enjoying it and I, sadly, didn't enjoy it as much as the 1st. Now that I've finished it, I think it's because in the 1st one, the main character was relatable and I really rooted for her from the get-go. In this one, she seemed like an intentionally obtuse twit for most of the book. And by most, I mean all except the last few pages. I know as the reader it can be easier to see overarching plots, foreshadowing, suspicious actions of characters, etc than it is for the people in the book. But come on Marlow, you had vague suspicions about your new bff and just ignored them over and over again? The big reveal of who Fauna really is didn't feel big because it was obvious that she was a self-serving and manipulative person throughout the entire book! My grievances aside I did ultimately enjoy the book. 3.5 ☆s and of course, I'll read the next one when it comes out too. I just absolutely loved the 1st one so freaking much, not loving this one feels like a big letdown. ... show more
