  • The best quality from Harper Collins so far
While the MSRP is incredibly steep, this edition has regular been on sale for roughly half price (bringing it in-line with other premium editions such as Easton Press), making it a very solid buy. The paper quality is excellent, the 2-color print is crisp and clear, and the illustrations are high quality transfers of Tolkien's own sketches, drawings, and paintings. Typically, I am averse to single-volume editions of LOTR from a practical standpoint, but this book is built to handle its size and is meant to be read. The spine is not overly tight, as many other recent HC books, and the binding is very nice. The book lays open to whatever page you turn it to without supplying additional pressure. I do wish it had been fully leather instead of quarter-bound, but the cloth is also nice, along with the cover boards. The slipcase is incredibly thick-walled and sturdy. The gilt edges are also well-done; certainly they are not just for show. My only complaint is with the presentation of some of the extras. It would have been nice to have a dedicated place or compartment in the slipcase or book for the leaves, maps, and King's Letter. All in all, however, it is a testament to the fact that high-quality manufacture CAN still take place. I will be getting the matching Silmarillion soon, and I hope HC decides to make an edition of The Hobbit along the same lines. ... show more

  • Nice Edition
I bought this as a gift. The recipient was pleased and said it was a nice gift. We'll see how it stacks up to the movies.

  • One book to rule them all
This is hands down the nicest edition of this book that I’ve come across. The deluxe binding and cover are very quality, and the extras that came with it (map, letter, etc) are all a nice touch. It’s also very easy to hold while reading and it stays open fairly easily for a book of its size.

  • A truly Magnificent edition
I've been looking at this edition for a while and finally decided to add it to my library. No regrets at all. Heavy, well bound, and a ton of extras to round out an amazing experience. Nothing can truly replace the feel of a real book in my hands.

  • PERFECT
I just had to have this book. This book is perfect in every way, from the timelessly perfect cultural philosophical story to the physical book itself. I've been a LOTR fan for decades and quite sure I'll remain an avid fan. I'm in the midst of my annual Spring LOTR reading this table volume and enjoying this gorgeous book immensely. Some years I'll also reread it during Winter. Worth every penny. ... show more
