  • Great little microphone, poor cable design and construction
Color: Gray with Black Foam Style: Old Packaging
I bought this mike 2 months ago to record and live-stream videos of small music performances (voice, piano, woodwinds) from home using my iPhone. Its compactness and direct iOS compatibility sold me and I was expecting only average sound quality. The actual sound quality and convenience of the on-board processing modes has been great, and rivals professional Shure mikes I've used in the past. To my surprise, the on-board processing modes cover most of my needs, some of which have had pretty stressing dynamic range requirements. I've mostly used iOS apps to record, and only occasionally needed Shure's MOTIV apps. The (large) disappointment has been the microphone's output port and the iOS Lightning cable that comes with the microphone. The first thing you notice is that a 3 ft cord is not nearly long enough if the iPhone (video) is on a tripod but the microphone (audio) is not. That leads you to ordering a longer cord, where you soon discover: 1. The micro-B USB connector on the mike is pretty obsolete and was not commonly used in the past, so you will find very few micro-USB to Lightning cords on line. 2. When you do find one, it will not work with this mike. Apparently, Shure's design for the interface is proprietary and the only cord that will work is the short one furnished by Shure. 3. You can, however, find longer male-female Lightning extension cords. They do work with the microphone's cord, so that's what I did. 4. Don't be tempted to try using the microphone's USB-B cord (also furnished for free) and adapting that to iOS Lightning with a USB extension cord. That won't work either thanks to Shure's unique port design. Once I solved the cord length problem, I soon noticed that Shure's cord was becoming looser at the microphone end (micro-USB), wouldn't stay securely plugged into the mike, and actually pulled out occasionally when the mike was being moved. Nothing abusive here, just routine activity, but not good during a recording session. So I just swallowed my pride, ponied up $30 (one third the cost of the mike!!), and ordered a (short 16 inch) replacement cord from Shure which I will probably tape to the microphone to make sure it stays in place. Poor construction, on top of poor interface design choices, is not what I've come to expect from Shure. Made the overall experience with this microphone a bit disappointing. ... show more

  • First time I've ever been completely disappointed by a Shure product.
Color: Gray with Black Foam Style: Old Packaging
I have been using Shure microphones and headphones for over 20 years, and this was the first time I've been completely let down by one of their products. The housing for this mic is cheap plastic - unlike any other Shure microphone I've ever seen. While it did connect fine to my PC, the audio result was completely disappointing. I was hoping for a small mic that I could use in our edit room to punch-in spoken lines, but the sound was so thin, it couldn't match the tone of the Shure MVL lav mic from the same line. Would this be a step up from a headset mic for a gamer? Maybe. Would I ever use it for a professional audio application? No. ... show more

  • Deceptive product description
Color: Black with Red Foam Style: New Packaging
They advertise "Apple MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) Certified for direct connection to any iOS device without the need for any additional adapters or connection kits" but nowhere does it reveal that it will NOT work with Facetime or for phone calls. iOS will not recognize it for those apps. Since that's what I bought it for it's a total fail. It may work for other applications or uses but I will never know. ... show more

  • Awesome, right out of the box
Color: Gray with Black Foam Style: Old Packaging
If I seem over-giddy here, it's because I've been tussling with electronics lately, and not winning. I love technology (maybe as much as Kip), but it doesn't always love me back, like today when Adobe Premiere crashed in the middle of a big project and took much of my day to troubleshoot. But, not my Shure table mic that arrived today. I took it out of the box, glanced at the manual, plugged it into Garageband, opened up a vocal track and BAM! It worked like a charm, easing a day of technofrustration. I like things that work like they are supposed to. It opened several tracks preset to effects; Narration, Bright vocals, telephone, fuzzy, and robot. I found the narration preset to be crystal clear and very suitable for voiceover and podcast recordings. The robot and telephone presets were fun to play around with and tweak. I found myself replicating Adrian Belew's phone speaking parts from his beautifully haunting & melancholy, "Phone call from the Moon" with the sung parts through the Bright Vocals preset. I must say, I didn't sound too bad. Now, if only I could play the spacy lead guitar in that song. I have other, more expensive mics for my musical vocal work. But, for the money, this little Shure does some decent heavy lifting and, with the use of my pop filter, will work just fine. Logic Pro will take a little more prep, but should render even better results. Not a big surprise, as Shure has occupied a prominent place in mics since... the invention of mics. So, it is easy for me to recommend this model as a very serviceable mic at a really great value. Honestly, you could spend a lot more and not really notice that much of a difference. Good bang for the buck. And, in these Covid times, couldn't we all use just a little bang for our buck? That, and electronics that work right out of the box. Peace and love to every reader of this review. ... show more

  • Very cool, sounds great, love it!
Color: Gray with Black Foam Style: Old Packaging
I just received this mic and it really is a solid performer. I bought it for my wife to record her students (clarinet) using her iPhone6S for tryouts and not only does it look awesome, the sound is excellent to my aging ears (her ears are fine and she likes it). Compared to her iPhone6S mic to this microphone is like comparing a Chevy Impala to a Tesla. The free app is also very cool, and makes it a one-button record with the gain being set automatically. Even when you clap hard with the app in auto gain mode, it does not clip and it still picks up whispers 2ft from the mic at the same time, so the app is very solid as well. Very happy I bought it and I am considering buying one for myself. I do a lot of sound work (not professionally) and I would say that the sound being recorded on her phone is very comparable to a Sure SM58 going XLR through a iRig PRE into the iPhone, and yes I do own that setup, so I know from whence I speak. ... show more
