Description

I purchased this knife set in December 2021 after doing extensive research, as I wanted a set that would cover all my needs without having to buy another. The quality is exceptional. The knives arrived razor-sharp right out of the box, and both the build and appearance are stunning. Even after years of use, their sharpness holds up incredibly well. As of October 2024, I'm writing this review after finally deciding to sharpen them for the first time, not because they had dulled, but as part of a new hobby. They were still sharp enough to pass the paper cutting test before sharpening, which speaks volumes about their longevity. The only additional knife I bought was a bread knife after a few months. The only other one I'm considering is a petty/utility knife, but purely out of interest in expanding my collection, not out of necessity. This set truly has everything you need, and with minimal care, it will last a lifetime. Yes, it's pricey, but you absolutely get what you pay for. Why did you pick this product vs others?: These were on a registry for a very important wedding of ours. We were so happy that they chose these knives. We have given them to many people and everybody has loved them. We have them in our home in Seattle as well as Cabo and on our boat. They are the best. They have a great warranty. They sharpen them for you. You have to be very careful though because they are super sharp. They will last a lifetime! Great for yourself or a wonderful gift! Nice set. I added a filet and bread knife to complete the outfit. I have to say that these knives are super sharp. I primarily use the chef's knife for prep work, but the pairing knife was amazing with lemons. The block that comes with the set is really nice as well. In fact, my friends both commented on how nice the block was before noticing how pretty and sharp the knives where. It's hard to see in the photos, but the block is cut at a few angles. The top and bottom are not parallel as the top slants forward and to the left. These extra angles make the presentation of the knives very nice. The sheers are really the best I've ever seen included in a kit. These are usually an after-thought, but I really like the set they've included here. ... show more

Worth the splurge. The blades are thin and scary-sharp so I’d say they are most appropriate for home use, while a more durable German blade would be better for professional use. This set had more of what I needed than other Shun sets I’ve seen at Williams Sonoma. I did have to buy a serrated bread knife to round it out. The block may be limiting if you want to add more long knives because there is only one space at the top of the block for another long blade, and the other 2 spaces are for shorter blades like paring or utility. ... show more

I'm not a knife expert, but in comparison to my old knives these are great. Not too heavy and very sharp, it takes very little effort to slice with them. The wood block is a bit different in color than I expected from the color of it in the image, but it's still beautiful. I recently returned a set of Ginsu Chikara knives for these Shun's. So far I'm very impressed with quality and craftsmanship. They have a very sharp edge, and work flawlessly through anything I use them for in my home kitchen. They are a bit pricey for the quantity of the set, but quality won me over. BEAUTIFUL knives and block. All was as pictured and described. Didn’t notice the top was angled to the side until we got it but that just makes it even more stylish. We absolutely love it! This was my husbands birthday present. Although a leftie he is still able to use with ease and stated they cut amazing! He emailed Shun and received no response. He called them and they advised no leftie knives and to reshape for lefties would be custom work which they don’t do. Lucky it works so well for him anyway. ... show more
