  • Greatness...
Of all of Om's releases, Advaitic Songs possibly has the greatest cover. While this is not essentially a reason to buy an album, it sure does look magnificent, glowing gold like that. The album is not a gatefold, so the two discs fit into a single cover. There's a single square sheet with lyrics on one side, and the amazing duck/snake image in embossed black on black paper. Very cool. Of the five songs, "Addis" lyrics seem to be in Sanskrit (!!!!), while the 10 minute-long "Sinai" only has seven lines!! On first listen you realise how different this album is from previous Om records, while also retaining the main characteristics of a great Om album - the bass, the drum, the cosmic lyrics. But this one has a new drummer, and also guest musicians who add vocals, tamboura, cello, viola, violin, flute, and tabla. The band also has a new member, drummer Emil Amos (replacing founding drummer Chris Hakius), giving the release a different vibe yet again. The first track on Side A, "Addis" is a chanty piece of music that eventually picks up with other instruments. It's gorgeous. That's followed by "State of Non-Return", a longer piece, begins with some spooky sounds, then picks up with great bass vibes. The vocals are quite distorted, something fairly new for Om. The following tracks each cover an album side, and run over 10 minutes. "Getsemane" starts off very slow and dull, eventually building up slightly and becoming a not-so-wild-but-still-groovy track, with familiar sounds from past Om albums. "Sinai" starts off with quite a bit of spooky droning, then getting into dubby bass and more spooky sounds. "Haqq al-Yaqin" has spooky string-sounding stuff, with bass and drum stuff, a great set of ultra-trippy lyrics ("blue orb on the spine's horizon"), and wonderful instrumental parts to take out the song. Gorgeous! ... show more

  • OM-An Eargasmic Spiritual Journey
When I was stumbling around on YouTube, I didn't think I'd find a great find. When I listened to the first few chords of this album, I was hooked and reeled in. OM's Advaitic Songs takes you on a musical listening journey. The best way to listen to this album to get the best effect is to listen with candles lit, some type of incense, and play it on some really good speaker system. Close your eyes and let it take you on the journey. By the time you get to the last song, "Haqq al-Yaqin", you will want to stay wrapped in the cocoon of OM that you wouldn't want to leave the meditational journey that you were just on. This is definitely a masterpiece that deserves to be listened to over and over again. If you haven't listened to it or on the fence about buying it, you should jump on the OM train and let this group take you on a mindful, eargasm journey. 5 stars all the way!! ... show more

  • Al Cisneros and OM are well worth checking out
OM is a fantastic band, both live and on vinyl recordings. Al Cisneros is one of my favorite bassist/frontman of all time and Emil Amos is a great drummer in his own way. I love every aspect of this album and how progressive it feels compared to OM's earlier work, especially when Chris Hakius was still the drummer. I would definitely recommend someone new to OM to listen to earlier stuff first, such as God is Good (Emil as drummer), and any of the earlier stuff with Chris, Variations on a Theme, Conference of the Birds and Pilgrimage. The only part of my purchase I was not pleased about was the packaging was a little damaged when I got it new. Other than that, I love this album and would highly recommend. ... show more

  • Interested in Om? Try this one.
It is a very solid release from Om. Probably my favorite Om album. It is not quite mind-blowing, so I won't give it 5 stars. I do like quite a few of the drum parts on this one, whereas I usually would concentrate more on the bass in other albums.

  • Great Om Album
Wow, what else can be said about this album. It is traditional Om but with more emphasis on spiritual music. They have incorporated many different instruments in addition to the bass and drums. Fear not, however, they are still a very essential part of this album. This is Om on a super spiritual high, and I love it. This is definitely a great successor to God is Good. I was a little worried about the drummer before, seeing as he has his own style but his style is blended perfectly with this album. For any Om fan this is a must have! ... show more

  • An excellent album, though a bit different for Om.
This is definitely very different for Om. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but if you're expecting to be crushed by intense doom/stoner bass guitar, you might be disappointed. That being said, it's an interesting direction and a quite enjoyable listen. The added instrumentation fits their style quite well.

  • Great Evolution from Previous Albums
Love the increased production value on Advaitic Songs. The old albums are great and still have their place, but this is a welcome new direction for Om. Still carries the amazing hypnotic effect of the previous releases, but now includes a beautiful Middle-East/North-Africa vibe. Has a good replay-ability, and as usual, by the end of the album you are left wanting for more. I'd like to see the next album be a double record release! ... show more

  • Beautiful album the whole way through
Beautiful album the whole way through. Obviously you can check it on YouTube before you buy. Record itself is fine, beautiful cover art, and a single lyric sheet. Fairly Spartan.
