    • A Cute, Affordable Introduction to Espresso Machines
This is my first espresso machine. I have been making pour-over coffee for several years, so I am familiar with coffee brewing, but I am very new to espresso machines. From that perspective, I found this an interesting and accessible introduction to this type of coffee maker. For my first few attempts, I used the same amount of coffee and approximately the same grind size that I normally use for pour-over. The resulting coffee was perfectly drinkable, but it did not impress me in terms of flavor. The individual characteristics of the beans were much less distinct than when I carefully brew the same kind of coffee by hand. To me, the result was closer in character to ordinary drip coffee than to the especially vivid flavors I can get from a good pour-over. However, since espresso normally requires a much finer grind and a different brewing approach, I would not take this first experiment as a definitive judgment of what the machine can produce. There is clearly a learning curve, especially for someone completely new to espresso. The steam wand is quite powerful for such a small machine. I tried frothing milk in a pitcher that was about half full, and the force of the steam was enough to make some of the milk splash out. Beginners may want to start carefully and learn the right wand position before using it at full force. What I appreciate most is that this machine has given me a practical introduction to how an espresso machine works. As someone who had never used one before, I was able to experiment with pulling shots and steaming milk without investing a large amount of money. I can easily imagine that a more advanced espresso machine would provide a very different experience, but as a beginner machine, this one has been educational and fun to explore. At around $50 when I checked, I think it does quite a lot for the price. It is also genuinely compact and quite cute, so it does not take up much counter space and makes a fun addition to a kitchen or coffee corner. ... show more
