This little fishing pole is adorable! While I’m sure it would be perfect for a child; I actually purchased the Moana version (with the fish attachment) to use as a cat toy. This is an excellent pole for a beginner child! I bought it for my 6 year old daughter . Let her practice with the plastic Shakespeare Fish that comes with it . Took her fishing with minimal instructions and she caught two fish within minutes . Our next outing she caught 3 ! I would highly recommend this for your kid. I put on a small hook with live worms and also tried powerbait worms . I added two split shots (weights) about 6-12 inches from the hook when we fished in a lake where she caught her biggest fish. I only used one split shot and a small grub and let her go at it when we fished in a creek where she caught 4 fish. ... show more

Super cute little fishing pole I purchased for my 5 year old daughter. The first time she took it out fishing, she caught two sunfish before something much larger jerked her hook, line, and bobber under and right out of the pole! Fortunately my little scrapper kept a tight grip on the pole so we didn't lose it. So far it has lasted her the summer and is still going strong. Casts smoothly. Works dam well! Easy to fix user issues! Lasted over a year so far. My daughter caught 4 Sunny's a small bass and a 5 lbs bass. The 5 pounder did not snap the rod or line! I did have to pull by hand once fish breeched water. The rod is strong the reel is not. My daughter loves this Moana rod and so do I. ... show more

Can really be used although doesn't come with any accessories. A 3 to 5 year old could actually cast into stream. Perhaps even a plastic hook that wouldn't catch anything but would be safe to bait. Of course like any reel the line can tangle.
