This is a great bait caster combo!! Unbeatable price! I caught my first largemouth Bass (ever) on it today at the lake! (In the pics) While I was also keeping my 4 and 2 year old occupied by myself! And I was using the fishing line that came pre-spooled!!! Less than 5 casts with a Kastking spoon (silver) and BAM!! THIS IS NOT A SPINNING REEL and it operates totally different.. You have to watch a couple YouTube videos before using to Learn how to use it and avoid birds nests and getting upset.. with ANY bait caster from cheap to expensive you have to Make adjustments on the tension knob and possibly the brakes for EVERY lure!! OR ELSE YOU WILL GET A BIRDS NEST or not get a good cast.. It’s very simple once you understand how it actually works. I just started fishing about 4 months ago.. so I am no pro at all.. but I was casting this spoon SUPER FAR and I mean Far! it was reeling in ultra smooth.. ZERO BACKLASH once proper adjustments were made for this specific lure.. I have been using this combo at least 4 days a week for the last month. It is a great rod to learn baitcasting on. I caught tons of fat bluegill and yellow perch on this pole, and one 12” channel cat. However, last night I managed to hook a heavier species, a beefy 22” American eel. Though only a few pounds, it managed to Completely burn out my drag; and after using the combo again this morning, I realized the reel was toast. Still giving 4 stars bc it is indeed great for small fish, but if your fishing for big bass or catfish and manage to reel a big one in, you might ruin the reel. Very cheaply made but will suffice for beginner or pan fishing. ... show more

I bought this because for the price it had the features I wanted. It casts exceptionally well for the price. Surprisingly well even. Dialing this in was a challenge. Tighten spool tension all the way and back it off till it hits its sweet spot. After that it performed very well. Yes, it is plastic. I am going to guess it's 85% plastic. That said, it brought pride to the Shakespear name. I spooled it with Kastking 40lb braid. Primarily for the Kastking braid, and went with 40lb to see how it worked, since a friend suggested it to me. I landed several 2lb++ bass with it on my first outing and am looking forward to using it again this weekend. ... show more

I received the product and went out to the pond to use it, when the bass bit my lure I set the hook and started to retrieve and the bait caster would not wind in the line. I was spinning the handle to see if it would work and it did. The brakes also sucked no matter what way u turned it nothing happened. Overall crappy rod and not worth money. DO NOT BUY! ... show more

Not a bad rod and reel if you wanna get into a casting reel. I recommend respooling it as mine instantly wanted to birdnest from sitting spooled up. Guessing it's sat a while and the string held its memory. I spooled mine with 14lb Berkley fireline and after that it casted beautifully even with some pretty light lures. This setup is cheap enough to get you started and you can then decide if a baitcaster is for you or not. And if you have problems don't give up right away just pay attention and learn from your mistakes. ... show more
