Description

The 50R is a low-profile motorcycle Bluetooth headset that features advanced technology. The newly upgraded Mesh 2.0 Intercom allows riders to experience a network with robust, reliable connections in two different Mesh Intercom modes. Multi-Channel Open Mesh allows for a near-unlimited number of users to communicate within range of the 50R across nine channels. Meanwhile, Group Mesh lets users create a private communication group with up to 24 nearby participants. Pair to your phone with Bluetooth 5 connectivity to listen to your music, hear GPS directions, and take phone calls. I installed this about a month ago. So far, so good. Install was relatively easy. I had to make some minor modifications to the speaker holes in my helmet, but other than that it was not overly difficult. Be sure to have some electrical tape handy to fasten the wires down into your helmet in an organized manner. As for performance, I took this on a 4 hour ride last weekend listening to Pandora through my phone as well as had a few calls come in. When my (modular) helmet is in full face position, no one can tell I am on a motorcycle. They say it sounds very clear, like I am riding in my car. With the helmet in the open position callers can hear wind turbulence through the boom mic, but I rather expected that. Battery life acceptable for the above scenario. As for performance using Mesh intercom with a group on a ride, I will post an update to this review when that event occurs. Until then, if you're on the fence about buying this little guy, I feel it is a very nice system for the price point. ... show more

    • Well worth the upgrade
I had the Sena smh10r and it was great for what it was. Then I upgraded to the 50R and it was a night and day difference in sound quality easy of use and features. The app is amazing you don't have to touch the 50R if you don't want to. Connecting to other bluetooth headsets was a snap and, connecting to other Sena's was even easier with the app. Gone (if you choose to use the app) are the days of the multi press to get to this menu to do that. That headache is gone with the app. I could go on and on but, you buy it and see for yourself. Update: it's 2022 and the battery is no good. Won't hold a charge at all. Contacted the seller, and they directed me to contact Sena. They said that they don't replace the battery on it, they will replace the entire unit. Great, but there's a catch, I would have to return the unit first let them test it THEN they will replace it. You can find a replacement battery for the unit, and do it yourself. Even with that being said it is still a good unit, but I think that it's time to give Cardo a try. ... show more

Definite improvement over the 20 series. Mesh tech is cool. Sound a definite improvement. But still a far cry from hi-fi.

    • Sound quality is leaps and bounds better than previous generation!
The overall sound quality for riding is so, so much incredibly better than the tinny horrid sounding Sena systems I'm used to which requires ear plugs to comfortably listen to. The app seems to work well, although I couldn't quite get the WiFi charging cable to function properly -- updated the firmware the old fashioned way. Additionaly, very pleased they have gone with the less fragile USB-C over their previous usage of micro USB! I imagine charge time is definitely faster. Coming from the old R lineup of Senas I am more than beyond pleased. Activating Google assistant works, but it seems clunky in picking up what I say at times. This is expected with the added road noise when riding, so I'm alright with this and it isn't directly related to the Sena unit itself. Intercom I have yet to try, nor mesh pairing, so I can't speak to these yet. Having the three button layout has been my favorite as I'm not a fan of the jog dial. The raised middle button helps to easily, quickly identify which is your volume up and down buttons along with quick pairing. ... show more

I purchased this because my ear buds were always falling out in my helmet. I did a little research before buying this model and found it was the best bang for the buck. I watched Sena's tips and tricks on their youtube channel before installing this and would recommend that everyone does this. Installation was easy and I had a little trouble pairing it at first but only because I kept skimming over one little sentence. That's on me. After I paired this and played music while fitting the speakers I applied the appropriate adhesive backed velcro where it should go and commenced with installation. The sound was definitely loud and I tested the audio by making a phone call. I even tried out google assistant on it, and it worked great ... show more

    • Feels like it wants to kill me
Update: after a particularly frustrating ride home trying to use it, I had enough and ripped it out and threw it in the e-waste. Total junk. Opening the box you can't help but think "wow, nice.. Apple level packaging and presentation!" It's downhill rapidly from there. It took me a long time to set up the unit so it could be updated. I used both a current iPhone and Android device, and it was really hit or miss as to trying to get it to connect to something. The instructions in the box were totally useless, and the app just lied about how to pair it. After an hour, something happened and it paired. It took three more attempts to set up the weird WiFi dongle and update the firmware (I am really not sure what the WiFi part is for.. couldn't any updates be done over bluetooth?). Next comes installing the speakers and mic in your headset. Again, no instructions on this or even pointers as to how to get started. I found a random YouTube video that helped. Current helmets have little pockets for speakers and some have guides for wires, so that all made it not too tricky on my SHOEI. You can really have almost no noticeable wiring and a neat finish - EXCEPT that the unit has a thick wire permanently attached and so you can't actually remove it without digging around to unplug the two speakers and mic from their little connecting wires If you are attaching this to your helmet, consider it permanent. Now the fun part - actually using it. I bought the R, which has three buttons. The S has a jog wheel. I now wish I had the S, as the three buttons are very hard to use. They're difficult to feel through gloves, and using the headset requires pushing multiple buttons at once which is not easy when you can't tell if you are actually touching any of them. Worse, the way in which features are selected is, frankly, insane. On the ride to work this morning I thought I would try to listen to the radio. Ok, press and hold two buttons to turn on. "Hello!" says a cheery female robot. Then to turn on the radio, press and hold the third button. So far so good. Now to adjust the volume - press the + button and.. wait no.. now it's trying to find the next channel preset. Ok, here are some traffic signals so I have to concentrate.. I will press a button to try and stop the current channel as I really don't want country music right now as I navigate these road works.. and BEEP.. it's now going through all the stations on the dial announcing each one.. 99.7 BEEP 102.8 BEEP 88.2 BEEP Just stop! There's traffic! I need to focus.. just stop.. Nope, it keeps going. I manage to turn it off.. Oh, and when you do get the radio just right (maybe before you set off on the ride) the sound quality isn't great. "High def sound"? Well, apart from that being a completely made-up term, no. Just no. It has tinny sound which is acceptable for talk radio, but lame for music. I have yet to properly test the walkie-talkie stuff, but the instructions make it look super complicated - and they already managed to make a simple radio complicated - so frankly I'm a bit scared to try it. As this is what I really got it for, I'll have to try some time I guess. But I'm not looking forward to it. In summary, this is mostly ok, but the user experience is designed to annoy you to an almost dangerous degree and the lack of instructions out of the box are unforgivable. Tips: * Watch SENA's own YouTube videos for how to pair and set-up. * Find SENA's own manual online (it's not in the box) for how to actually pair and configure. * Search YouTube for installation videos, and prepare to commit to a permanent fix. * Practice for a week to learn how the buttons work otherwise you will be dangerously distracted. You know in movies how someone can blindfold themselves and completely disassemble some complicated weapon and put it back together in 30 seconds? You need to do that. * Consider not getting this one. ... show more
