  • Gamechanger for freedom of mobility
Style: Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickscooter Color: Dark Grey
I haven't needed tech support but everything else has been 5 stars. Full disclosure I have an ES4 with the extra battery. The extra battery has counteracted all the negatives from the reviews I read. 'Not as long as advertised' and 'hard time making it up inclines' were the 2 main issues other users were stating. Another issue users were complaining about was from the ES2 and ES3's and involved the electronic brake not working properly. Luckily, I've not had any issues with my ES4 firmware. I am disabled in such a way I simply have very low energy so I also have the seat attachment. I chose this model because Segway is a very known brand versus all the others I looked at in the same price range. It has 2 'no-flat' tires which was a must for me. It cannot be used in rain (like most e-scooters) however if you have a large poncho stored with it you can get caught in a surprise storm and not ruin your battery if you immediately seek shelter. I don't have a license and I use a scheduled shuttle service to get to certain places which takes at least 24 hours to schedule. Ever since getting this scooter I've been able to actually see a movie in the theater and each at fast food restaurant! Sounds mundane but anyone with lack of mobility will know exactly how nice it is to have that freedom back. Of course, I like in an idea city that is close together lots of great sideways and very bike friendly. I don't use bike lanes (just sidewalks) but I could in a pinch. I've been using it regularly for a couple months and have had zero issues. It works in the cold for short trips just don't charge it when the battery is too hot or cold. Even using it semi-heavily (~20 minutes a day) it only requires charging once a week. My only complaint, which doesn't warrant a star off, is that when its done charging it doesn't automatically turn off. It DOES stop charging (so you don't ruin your battery by overcharging) but it does stay on and if you leave the under lights on your just asking for a higher electric bill if you forget and let it charge all night. It only took about 3 hours to charge from completely drained. It also turns heads a lot - very stylish. I have a kryptonite padlock and it is just small enough to go through the back tire effectively "booting" the scooter. I would recommend a front carrying case for storing a poncho and your lock. I'd also recommend a carrying strap as it's weighted very weird when folded and doesn't just roll like a luggage suitcase. I really can't put in to words how thankful I am for this purchase. Oh yeah, its also super quiet - might want a bell or horn if you have narrow sidewalks or a mirror attachment for the right side. I wouldn't recommend a cell phone holder because I couldn't find one for less that 100$ that would actually work - seriously, you need a motorcycle grade holder or you might as well throw your phone to the ground and cut out the middle man. I simply wheel the whole scooter into restaurants and stores for paranoia reasons - has never been an issue yet. In the movie theater they actually let me lock it in an outdoor closet only the managers had access too - real peace of mind. Again, I can't say enough about how happy its made me. I rented a LIME prior to this and its just like having a rental scooter but has a seat and is always around when you need it. And at ~4.25$ for 20 minutes for the rental and 2$ a shuttle ride - it will pay for itself after about a year. Assuming Segway is good with their 2 year warranties: best scooter available that has a seat accessory. ... show more

  • Impressive scooter
Style: Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickscooter Color: Dark Grey
I bought myself one and my 10 yo boy another during the week before black Friday. Up until the snow this past week, we had been bundling up and riding all around our neighborhoods and in the city common next door and my oh my, I'm glad I got the ES4's. I have not had a single problem with either scooter. I even bought two spare batteries as there could be a time when we go into Boston or anywhere-really, and having the extra batteries would mean that no matter where we go, we'll be able to get back either to the truck or public transportation but when it comes down to it, even though the scooters are heavy, when they are not powered they can be kicked down the sidewalks or streets. The scooters are fast. My boy is 10 and on Sport mode, he can fly. He always wears a helmet and is a fairly accomplished dirtbike rider and skier so, I don't worry much about him being able to handle both the speed and power, which he has been. Even for me, the power is great. Fast enough on level ground and just enough for climbing steep and long uphills as we live in a neighborhood that is at the top of a series of hills or just one big hill in the city. Battery life has been impressive, but of course, the motors and batteries are new but still, even after a good 16 to 20 mile ride, we have never come home with less than 30% and we are on Sports mode the entire time and not trying to conserve the power at all, never mind that for to get home, we have to go uphill for quite some distance. I also have set the batteries to only charge to 90% and also have a spare battery for the just-in-case-future when the weather gets warmer and we can spend all day, all night riding around. The headlight is a very nice touch as are the lights underneath. The headlight is bright enough for riding in the darkest of nights, no problem. Having the option to have the mostly programmable light show lighting up under the deck of the scooter is a great way to see where the other rider is at night. I'm one that actually likes the electric brake that is the left thumb. My boy and I are still getting used to the power it has when turned fully on and even when using it at different rates when summoning up the braking power. By and large, I have never even needed to use the rear, friction footbrake as I'm never a fan of having to wear away my tire, just to slow down. At the same time, it just means that the electric brake has been more than enough to keep me out of trouble. That the electric brake is regenerative, even if the amount of energy returned to the battery is negligible, the fact that some power does get regenerated, and for free, and with no wear and tear on ANYTHING, is awesome. The spare battery on the post is a nice touch. It does make the post and feeling of the scooter different but once one gets used to it, like with anything else that people get used to, it is like there is nothing on the post. That we have the option to swap it out with another one we can carry in a backpack to get us another 10 or so miles so we can get back to the vehicle, is one of the big reasons why I chose the ES4. It is also super easy to change out the battery as the rubber bungs just get pried out, the allen wrench that came with the scooter to assemble the handlebars-which is a nice tool, a bigger plastic handled T-Allen wrench, the two bolts come out, the new batteyr goes on, making sure to just give the bottom of the battery a nice little fist bump to make sure the connections for the battery get connected and that is it. Plus, if we ever did drain the first set of batteries, we'd ride slowly, conserving the power to get either home or back to the truck so we don't have to actually kick-scoot back. If there is a knock, and one that my boy and I don't really mind, is that as the tires are solid, the ride is firm but easily tolerable. As we have all had Razor A5 kickscooters, compared to those urethane tired and non -suspended scooters, the ES4's ride on air. The suspensions both front and back are enough to help with the ride. There is definitely that front clacking when one hits the front wheel hard on a bump or crack, but if one is good, one just either avoids or, slows down for the bumps or cracks or, if one is really good, will just rear back and have the front wheel loft over whatever obstacle might cause the clack. My boy and I have gotten used to both the sound and how the scooters react over most terrain/pavement. The entire scooter, minus the external battery and the fenders, is Aluminum. It is heavy duty. The handlebar controls are plastic but, Segway sells the replacements for all the handlebar parts and it would take a 2nd story fall or full speed into a wall or barrier to bend the steering stem or the deck. Even all the LED lights under the deck are recessed well into the solid aluminum chassis. The build quality is all there, at least externally. I also like how most all the parts that make up the scooter are available. I can imagine eventually needing a new internal battery and maybe a front wheel motor but the other big reason I chose the ES4 is for all the replacement parts that can be gotten should wear and tear and time take their toll on the original equipment. My boy has about worn out his front tire after some 70 miles as he is only about 70 lbs so when he accelerates at WOT from a stop in Sport mode, he can get the front tire to spin up to speed as he is so light. Meanwhile, my front tire is still in decent shape and the rear tires have almost no wear at all. The app is good enough and shows me all I need to know and when the battery charger is plugged in, it will show where the batteries are with regards to %-left before fully charged. I'll also agree with the other review that has the battery bars as being hard to interpret with how much battery life is left where the app will give one the exact amount of %-left for the batteries. I'm glad I went with the ES4 as between the speed/top speed, nice acceleration in either normal or sport mode and the great range. When I go out for a ride, I'm going out for a ride and a 10 mile or less range was not going to cut it. That we can get a good 20 miles, on mostly level ground, not needing to go slow as cruising from 12-17 mph is almost effortless, and to be able to swap out the external battery in the field to get 10 more miles, the ES4 was a good choice. It has only been a month with the scooter and less than 100 miles. Once the spring comes and then summer and we can ride more and more and more, it will be nice if the scooters can go a few more years or even 5 years and the next generation of stuff with maybe more speed, more range and a lower price will come and I'll be 5 years older and gulp, the kids will be 14 and 15 years old. ... show more
