I ordered these for my 93-year-old mother-in-law's sofa after she fell attempting to rise from its lower and softer than ideal seat. I temporarily placed the risers under a similar seat height chair in my home and tried them myself. They really reduce knee strain, which will be particularly helpful when MIL's gout flares up. Combined with a sofa under-cushion support I also ordered from Amazon MIL's sofa will be much easier and safer for her to use. The large footprint may look awkward, but it offers good stability and reduces the likelihood of permanent dents in carpet. The raised sides ensure the furniture legs won't slide off the risers if the sofa is jarred by grandkids or a large dog jumping on the furniture. Edge holes allow fastening the riser to the floor to prevent sliding on smooth flooring. These are well designed, well-constructed furniture risers.
