  • Interferes with Unlock with Watch Feature
Color: Space Gray
This item did not meet my quality expectations for its price. My first impression was how plasticky this felt even though it was supposedly made from aluminum. I believe the material that provides the gray coloring is aluminum after closer inspection (I thought I found chipped paint out of the box, but it was adhesive residue). My second impression was color: Satechi documents the apparent difficulty matching the shade of gray every Mac Mini that's been produced since the 2018 model was introduced, but it was off quite a bit. Presumably, each and every Mac Mini is the same shade of aluminum everywhere in the world. I feel like the range of mismatch should not be so wide. And one last aesthetic critique: there is supposedly an LED at the bottom right. My dock had a plastic bump there, but could not be mistaken for being a lit LED, so not sure what that was about. The dock seemed to work quickly at speeds expected for the type of USB contained, and I understand the complexities of the USB C port and what it can and cannot support, when. All of that is functional, so I elected initially to keep the dock because it is a clever concept and does the actual "work" I need. I changed my mind later because: I use a feature macOS has had for several years: unlock with Watch. When enabled, waking up the Mac while wearing my Apple Watch automatically unlocks the Mac. I started having trouble with it, but I have occasional issues every now and then, so I troubleshot a little and disregarded. I finally removed the dock altogether after several days of troubleshooting, and that whole day (and every day since because I never put it back and returned the item), unlocking with my Watch is back to working 99.5% of the time like before, where it would not unlock consistently >90% of the time while placed in the dock. I suspect there was some issue related to Bluetooth signal strength (the antennas are at the bottom of the Mac, where it sets in the dock) and time-of-flight, but really have no way of verifying. ... show more

  • Really cool and useful - as long as your Mac Mini isn't being used under load
Color: Space Gray
This unit is really classy looking and quite useful for moving ports to the front of the machine. I have way more devices than ports, and some only need to be connected occasionally, so not having to fumble with the back of the machine is a big plus. I do wish a second USB/Thunderbolt port would have been included on the front of the unit. My biggest complaint, and why I gave it 3 stars is be very careful if you have to use your Mac Mini under load (heavy CPU intensive applications). I have an external GPU, but the Mac Mini when sitting on top of the Satechi hub and I'm running multiple apps or a CPU intensive program (i.e. Adobe Premiere), it puts the Mac Mini CPU under load, and temperatures for the CPUs (and all the cores) were soaring past 100C (making the Mac to hot to put your hand on). Invariably my machine had locked up more than a few times (running 6C i& / 64GB RAM / 1TB SSD) requiring a hard power down. Even with a fan control program like Macs Fan Control (free download), turning fans to "Full Blast" setting didn't help with the unit and it still got incredibly hot and locked up. How'd I solve my issue? I put a small spare SSD drive under the Mac Mini between the hub and the computer (so it's wedged upwards), and doing this and running the machine at loads keeps the temperature far lower (around 38-44C). When I remove the SSD and put the Mac Mini back down, the temperatures begin to climb again. I'm seeing an average difference of 10C when I elevate the Mini vs not elevating it. Like the device, wish it had another fan underneath it to move air in and out. ... show more

  • useful, but not perfect
Color: Space Gray
My Satechi USB-C hub arrived today, and I just installed it. Pros so far: - I'm doing a backup of my Mac mini to a portable WD hard drive via the front panel USB port right now. So far so good. But the front connections are only "Up to 5 Gb/s" so it's going to be a very slow backup. - The size and shape are exactly the same as the Mac mini (not counting height, obviously), so from that perspective, they look like they go together. - Setup couldn't be simpler, since it's an unpowered hub. Cons so far: - The packaging is crazy difficult. It's ironic this is a product designed to be used with a Mac, because the packaging it came in is about the least Apple-like packaging I've seen. You basically have to rip open the outer box, and then rip open the inner box to get the thing out. - The color doesn't quite match the space grey Mac mini chassis. It's a little more silver and less charcoal. - There is a tiny LED on the front to indicate that it's plugged in and receiving power. This LED is designed to be directly under the power light on the Mac mini, and it is. But the LED is about 1/10 the size of the one on the Mac. It's so small I can't even see that it's illuminated from most angles. It's dimmer than the reflections off the USB-C port that's next to it. Looking straight on, I can see they're about the same brightness, but the light on the hub is recessed much farther, so it's nearly invisible from off-angle. ... show more

  • Good Hub, Color Not as Advertised
Color: Space Gray
For the money, it's about as functional as I'd expect. It shows up in the System Profiler as a USB hub, which it is, and devices seem to get a decent throughput. It's nice to have front facing ports and the underside is grippier than the bottom of the Mac. The 2018 mac mini has a smooth bottom and slides easily on the desk. My biggest issue, and yes I know this is minor, is that the color doesn't meet the advertising or match the updated version of Space Gray. This is more like the original space gray that came out in 2015, where it was honestly more of a slightly darker silver. I've attached a picture. It would be less distracting if it blended in with the chassis like the product images. Again, I know that's a minor gripe, but this is a work machine that I look at for 40 hours a week and it's distracting. ... show more
