  • Wish I would have bought this one first, excellent sound and workmanship quality - great product
This radio has amazingly good sound quality and station lock in (only tested with FM so far). The build and workmanship quality is so evident. I have bought other radios that were half the cost or less and regret it. They have all failed in one manner or another. This unit is very easy to use and set up. Has more than enough memory sets, is has a large volume control on the left (push buttons) and has a tuning wheel on the right that is like a car blinker where you click up or down or press in. The power button switches mode on short pushes and a long hold down turns off unit. The unit automatically has a 90 minute time to power off too. The sound quality is superior to any other radio like this I have ever had. I pair this with the corded Apple ear buds (I have yet to find anything better than these ear buds). Radio takes two AA batteries and so far it seems like these batteries last a very long time. I have not had this long enough to determine durability, but will over the next month. I use it for exercise and bike riding and will update this post if anything changes. This unit is well worth the extra money....spend you money wisely and once. Thank you to Amazon for making this a Prime item. The unit came packaged well and quickly. ... show more

  • Yes, FM Listener, This Is The Pocket Portable You Want, Good RF Performance For FM Reception
I have owned a few pocket portables in the past, but this one is the best. Most of the others had a built-in speaker that sounded tinny but was fine for talk, baseball games and similar programming. All I've done AM-wise is make sure that works. I bought this radio for FM duty, and couldn't be more pleased. With one exception, which is this - the bass boost is too aggressive. Probably many people like that, but the problem is that with the boost off, the bass is too lean. So I opt to listen with boost, mostly. However, stations come in so cleanly, and the radio sounds so good, I can live with the overblown bass boost. Would have been nice to have at least two levels of boost to choose. The other small radio that I own which has no speaker is the little Sony wrist-band model, notable for how well that wrist-band functions, but its FM performance is noisy with all signals, however strong. Nowhere near this league. Of course the DT-160 uses current technology DSP which makes a big difference in reception. My home has multiple reception issues due to terrain, power lines and a lot of electronic devices. Tuners have a hard time in here. This radio pulls in the locals cleanly, as it should, but many models fail to do this well. I really wasn't expecting that, so I am very pleased. I may return later and edit this review to address AM performance eventually, but the truth is that I have several other radios (a bit larger) for my AM dxing, and I don't expect this to be a strong AM contender based on other reviews elsewhere. If you are looking for a small radio for listening to music on FM radio then this one will be hard to beat - and its price is very reasonable given its excellent performance. Just remember that your headphone wires are the antenna and if you do hear any noise due to a very weak signal, reposition the wire. I bought it in white along with a pair of Sony MDRZX100 headphone in white (also from Amazon) for a nice coordinated look. Just got the radio yesterday and love it already. Small, light and functionally outstanding, so what's not to like? UPDATE - I've used this radio a lot for three-and-a-half years now, and it still looks, feels, operates and sounds like new. I'm an FM-only user... well, a rare ballgame on AM once or twice a year. But this radio is all about good stereo FM sound, whether via headphone or jacked into a garage system. In addition to good reception and sound, you get a radio that runs a long, long time on a pair of batteries. I love this model and recommend it highly. ... show more

  • Another good Sangean radio
I'm a fan of Sangean radios in general, and bought the DT-160 to use when traveling. I also own the DT-120 which I use when hiking, biking and exercising. This review will compare the two models. I'm a 90% AM listener so I'll focus on the AM performance rather than FM. The DT-160 has features that are great when traveling. The jog wheel tuning control is convenient and an improvement over their previous radios. The clock (which displays even with the radio off) is handy. But the biggest improvement is the lighted display. It will be lit for several seconds after any control is used and is very welcome when listening in bed with the lights out. The penalties you incur for these features are size and weight. The DT-160 is 101 x 63 x 19 mm vs. 93 x 50 x 14 for the DT-120. 86% larger volume. It is also over twice as heavy: 121.4 vs. 58.3 g (with batteries). This, of course, is due to the design decision to use 2 AA batteries for the DT-160 vs. 1 AAA for the DT-120. This gives the DT-160 much more energy to play with (4.8 A-Hr vs. 1.0 A-Hr for new batteries). The battery selection was no doubt done to provide for a long battery life when using the lighted display, which is the largest current drain for this product. There are things I didn't like about it. There are only 5 AM presets. There is no option for 200 KHz FM tuning steps. 200 KHz station spacing has been standard here in the US for many years, but Sangean (in their other radios also) uses 100 KHz which doubles the number of control inputs needed when tuning across the band. But my biggest disappointment was with AM sensitivity. I took both radios to locations where I normally listen to AM stations under marginal reception conditions and compared them. They were essentially identical. Not bad, mind you, but the same. I was hoping that Sangean would utilize some of the larger internal space in the DT-160 to incorporate a larger ferrite antenna so that AM sensitivity would be improved. Not the case. My best guess is that they use essentially the same antenna and circuitry in both models. I realize that most of my "gripes" are because I like long-distance AM reception. Probably 80% of their customer base only listen to FM and local AM stations. Those folks would no doubt be totally happy. I'm glad I bought it. I enjoy using it when traveling. Just like I really enjoy the small and light DT-120 when outside exercising. Two different design points that both succeed in addressing their intended markets. ... show more

  • VERY nice pocket radio in the size of a deck of cards
The DT-160 is really easy to get working, out of the box. I am not an audiophile or an AM DXer. I don't care if I get a slight fuzz-out on FM sometimes. I just want to listen to local voice and music radio stations with a reliable signal and decent sound while I am out walking my dogs or strolling around the Champlain Valley in far-northeast upstate NY. This radio is GREAT! It's very lightweight (less mass than a deck of cards) and easily fits in a pocket. I can pick up all of the local AM stations easily and even more FM stations, including one or two from Montreal (60 miles away). The DSP tuning will give you the best of both worlds - excellent selectivity while not sacrificing on sensitivity. Obviously, greater elevation will give you an advantage, but I have no complaints in our little rural city of Plattsburgh. Some folks don't like the headphones, which are the size of pennies and sit in the crook of each ear but I find them comfortable and practical because I am just walking, not bouncing around or doing strenuous exercise. Glad to recommend this product! Bonne chance et bonne réussite ... show more

  • Great little radio for carrying on the go.
Works very well and brings in distant stations well and great sound fidelity. I've used it for many years and still works fine.

  • Good radio, but not for critical listening
The SANGEAN DT-160 is a fair deal for its price. Pros: *Bold and clear lighted display. *Easy to operate. *It has a clock and power off timer. *It has a lock switch to prevent unintended activation of functions. *It has exceptionally good selectively and average sensitivity on FM. *It has acceptable selectively and sensitivity on AM considering its size. *It features multiple tuning options including 10 FM and 5 AM memory presets as well as manual and scan tuning. *It has multiple bandwidth settings for both FM and AM, which can aid in reception of weak and crowded signals. Cons: *The radio has a glossy finish that emphasizes fingerprints and smudges. *With today's advances in miniaturization, the radio should be at least half its size. *There is a clearly audible and annoying whining sound heard at very low volume settings. Had I known of this audio artifact beforehand, I would have not purchased the DT-160, but many users may not find it distracting. *Its FM stereo decoding threshold is noticeably higher than with most other radios of its type, meaning that signals must be quite strong and remain so to be presented reliably with stereophonic sound. My conclusion is that the SANGEAN DT-160 is adequate for general use, but fails the test for critical listening. ... show more

  • Wow
I wanted to replace my trusty old Sony Walkman AM/FM analog pocket radio with a modern digital one. I was amazed when searching Amazon how inexpensive digital pocket radios were. I ordered one for just $17.99. It was OK, but it had a permanently attached big loop of a wrist strap. I was about to cut it off when I realized the wrist strap had a wire inside of it. It was the FM antenna! That wasn't going to work for me, so back it went. My next choice was a $12.99 digital pocket radio. The audio quality was terrible. A very noticeable and very annoying hiss permeated the audio. Then I remembered the old maxim, you get what you pay for. So I deicded to stick with brand names I knew and to crowbar open my wallet and pry out a few more simoleons. I ended up with this Sangen DT-160 as my choice. Wow. This is a nice radio. It has a quality feel, quality construction and a quality look. The sound quality is great. The Dynamic Bass Boost feature sounds terrific on FM. On AM talk radio, it softens the sound just a bit. Sensitivity is outstanding. I live 70 miles from a major city and am able to pull in stations that my old analog radio couldn't. The display backlight is nice for nighttime listening while in bed. As nice as this radio is, it has a few shortcomings. Whenever you turn it on, it will turn off automatically in 90 minutes. But, when turning the radio on, if you hold the on button down for two seconds, the auto-off feature is disabled (radio beeps to indicate the change). I wish this was the other way around. And the 90 minutes is fixed. You can't adjust that. So it's 90 minutes or nothing. I wish it had more memories than five per band. Although there are two FM bands with five memories each, but I listen mostly to AM. Scan tuning is a little touchy. If you're on 630 AM and there's a station at 650 AM, you'll probably miss the station on 650. Despite these shortcomings, this radio is a keeper! UPDATE: This radio pulls in AM stations from over 1,000 miles away! I'm located in Colorado and have picked up stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, El Paso, San Antonio, Minneapolis, Chicago, Saskatoon and Melfort Saskatchewan, Nashville and Louisville, the last two both over 1,000 miles distant! I should add that this reception was at night and not during the day. ... show more

  • so much better than the lousy Retekess V112!! so much better than the lousy Retekess V112!!
This is a replacement for the VERY disappointing (considering all the 5 star reviews) Retekess V112 radio. The Retekess V112 was terrible and by terrible I mean horrible and by horrible I mean worthless. This Sangean DT-160 is pretty sweet! It has a nice weight to it, seems to be high quality materials. The downside is the location of the earbud port which makes it difficult to hit the #1 preset button (I just move my favorite channel to #5 preset button). The second downside is that there is an automatic 90 minute timer. If there is a way to turn this off I can not find it in the directions or o the radio unit itself. But easy enough to just turn the radio back on. I use rechargeable AA batteries and it was extremely well. No hiss in the radio broadcast, good volume sound. SO far, so good! ... show more
