  • Best Samsung tablet I've used...
First, I think it's worth mentioning something that I've seen in numerous places online (forums, reviews): Consider yourself lucky if the unit you purchase does not have an issue with scrolling on a webpage. By that, I mean a "wave" effect as you scroll up/down. This is definitely noticeable, and has been reported by many users. I purchased a unit from a Marketplace seller, thinking it was defective, and returned it. Purchased a brand-new unit directly from Amazon fulfillment, and the same issue existed. Some folks have a unit who don't experience this (so they say), but I believe it to be practically universal. I would lastly point out that this is an orientation-specific issue. In other words: if you use the tablet in a horizontal orientation, the problem disappears. That said, literally everything else about this tablet's performance is fantastic. It doesn't run hot (at all), which is a first for any Android device I've used. It is snappy, responsive, and sleeps exceedingly well. One caveat: it chews through battery life when connected to a 5gHz wifi network, which is also something vastly reported. This is easy to remedy if you don't want to charge the unit more often: turn wifi off when not in use. Standby time will be insane. My only complaint? The speakers. They're the worst I've ever experienced, ever. I came over to this device from a Nexus 9, which - while a very hot-running unit - had an incredible listening experience. So that jump left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, since most of the time I'm not going to use headphones with a tablet. This is definitely a hardware limitation; no "update" is going to fix it. It's something I can live with. Overall, there isn't much going on in the way of a unique/custom Android experience in terms of the online dev community. There just aren't many people gravitating toward this device from that perspective, so you will be limited to the out-of-box ROM (and any future updates). Luckily, root is possible, and that's really all I care about personally. The Nova launcher delivers a great experience, as usual, far superior to TouchWiz. Great tablet, it delivers where you need it to, and won't leave you frustrated. That is, unless you want to listen to anything at a nominal volume. ... show more

  • Gorgeous screen, super slim, performs well
I have been looking to buy another 10" tablet for a few years now. I previously owned an Asus Transformer Prime and enjoyed reading manga and news stories and such on it until I eventually sold it, and I wanted to get something for the same purposes and this has filled my needs nicely. I got a 128gb Patriot microSD card and loaded it up with media and have been thoroughly enjoying using this. I'm not going to go over every cool thing about Android or the tablet form factor in general and am going to focus more on what sets it apart from other tabs i've used. Pros: - The screen is gorgeous, and the main reason I chose this over others I was considering. AMOLED is definitely my preferred display type, the contrast is amazing! The resolution is high and brightness is more than sufficient. ~10" is the perfect tablet size for me. - Aspect ratio is great for reading things (in portrait mode) or watching older TV shows or playing retro games in emulators (in landscape of course) - SO thin (see pic). I literally wouldnt want them to make a tablet any thinner than this! Sometimes I almost feel like it's too thin/ - Even though it's not metal like the ipad, the construction feels high quality. the soft-touch texture on the back feels great in the hand and provide good grip, the beveling and metal trim around the edges and home button give it a premium look and feel. - The size/aspect ration mean that many accessories designed to fit ipads will work with it (such as the padded sleeve i bought for it) - Fingerprint sensor is fairly accurate. Not as accurate as my Nexus 6P by any means, but it works on the first try more often than not. - Sufficiently fast for my purposes. Browsing and everything is fast as you could really ever want, games play pretty great (again, not quite as good as my 6P, but the size of the screen makes them more enjoyable) - Battery life is pretty good for how thin this thing is. I can get almost 10 hours or screen on time if I'm doing mostly reading and closer to half of that if I'm playing games. Cons: - The screen has this weird ripple distortion when you scroll in portrait mode, which some people dont seem to really notice but I definitely do. It's hard to describe, but its almost like things on the screen get skewed into a... vertical parallelogram while scrolling. So a horizontal line across the screen looks like its slanted up on the right side until you stop scrolling. I have read other people suspecting that this is because of how the screen draws/refreshes the picture on the screen and saying that it is basically a screen that is really mostly designed to to used in landscape mode in a tablet that's oriented in a way that encourages mostly portrait usage. I may seem to be making a big deal of this, but I really have sensitive eyes (i.e I can't use most 60hz monitors for extended periods of time and certain uses because most give me headaches and I usually use 144hz monitor all day) and you may not even notice. Even tho I notice it, it's not often an issue. Really it's mostly when scrolling through FB newsfeed that it becomes noticeable. - The fingerprint (or should i say thumbprint, since thats what most people use) sensor is good but not perfect or even what i'd consider "great". Even after registering both of my thumbs multiple times to attempt to cover all the angles I could be touching the home button in, it still occasionally fails - The home button sometimes sticks. I'm not sure what makes it do it sometimes but not others. It could be variables like environmental temperature, it could be pushing it on the edge, but whatever does it, it feels a little cheaper quality than I expected. - Part of me wishes they would have made the tablet a little thicker so the battery could be bigger - The soft touch texture on the back of the tablet does show smudges and such after a while of handling it (especially if your hands get sweaty or moist in any way) - Not pure Android experience. I've been spoiled by Nexus devices for too long. I don't really care for the modifications Samsung has made to the interface. Although with Nova or Google Now launcher I can get it close to how I want, for the most part. I don't like the back button being on the right, when all the devices i've owned have had it on the left. I don't like not immediately getting the latest version of Android. But, I knew all these things before I bought it, and at least Samsung supposedly plans on rolling out Marshmallow update over the next few months. - Cameras are "meh", nothing great. But who buys a tablet to use as a camera? - "Hey, nice ipad!" The size and aspect ratio will cause you to be bombarded by even more of these sort of inaccurate comments than other models. ... show more
