Description

Winner of the First Annual McIntyre’s Fine Books Mystery Prize “Safe is a propulsive thriller that confirms Ryan Gattis as one of our most gifted novelists.” —Michael Connelly, author of The Wrong Side of Goodbye Ryan Gattis' gritty, fast-paced thriller, Safe, hurtles readers toward a shocking conclusion that asks the toughest question of all: how far would you go to protect the ones you love? Ricky ‘Ghost’ Mendoza, Jr. is trying to be good. In recovery and working as a freelance safecracker for the DEA, the FBI, and any other government agency willing to pay him, Ghost is determined to live clean for the rest of his days. And maybe he could, if the most important person in his life hadn’t gotten into serious financial trouble. To fix it, all Ghost has to do is crack a safe and steal drug money from under the noses of the gangs and the Feds without getting caught. Or killed. Rudy ‘Glasses’ Reyes runs drugs and cleans up messes for the baddest of bad men. When Ghost hits one of his safes, Glasses must hunt him down or be held accountable. But Glasses is worried about more than just money. The heist puts everything in his life at risk—his livelihood, his freedom, even his family. Read more

  • Just Fantastic
Wonderful tale of real life ne'er-do-wells from this excellent author. Lifelike, brilliantly written and another great weapon in this author's portfolio as one of the great crime writers of this new century

  • SouthEast L.A. Noir
I just recently discovered Ryan Gattis: I am definitely hooked! SAFE was my fourth Gattis book ( The Big Drop - Homecoming; All Involved; and The System) and I have already ordered Kung Fu High School. Excellent books - Excellent writer. Mr. Gattis' prose reeks of authenticity! High recommended...!

  • Intriguingly different
It was intriguing and different. I was distracted by the way the two main characters pronounced “ probably “ , I grew up in so. Central and EastLA and never heard that. Also why would that have been the only mispronunciation???

  • Wow - My Kind of Crime Novel
THIS book. WOW. Huge kudos to Ryan Gattis. Made my top ten list for sure. Gangsters, thick stacks of drug money, heists, safe cracking, DEA, love, loss, and redemption, all told as if this is the author's real life. Seriously, Gattis can write hardcore Hispanic criminals in Los Angeles as if that's who he is: a gangster. Made my top ten list of all time. ... show more

  • Excellent startling writer
Gattis writes of two young men unknown to each other who live in the fully realized Los Angeles world of gang life - rules, commerce, infrastructure. Gattis repeats his success with that as in ALL INVOLVED. And you believe and follow it with fascination as both men here figure out in their thoughts how to do the right things in the context of this world. They don't meet when one is sent out to kill the other but by scrambling the rules they make, let's say, a certain kind of morality work. ... show more

  • Another Surprise
This is the second book in a row I have read that has been a complete surprise. You know it's great when you're having trouble reading the last fifty pages through tears. This was a thriller and a heist story, but it was also a story about the deeply personal struggles of two strong young men with serious problems. One is a safecracker who had survived cancer only to have it recur. The other is a mob under-boss with a damaged eye. The two men act in opposition to eachother. Their histories, motivations and maneuvers make this book fascinating. Read it! ... show more

  • Really? 5 stars?
Everything is double speak... two characters written in the first person? How can that work? Disjointed, written in threads, nothing is in order, couldn't finish, didn't want to, extremely dissatisfied
