  • I really enjoyed this book
Format: Hardcover
I really enjoyed this book, and gobbled it up in about two days. Baby Doll centers around two sisters - identical twins, to be precise - and what happens when they are separated by distance and unique traumatic experiences...and then reunited. While there is romance in the book, I found it very refreshing that the primary relationship was between siblings. Overton's personal background as a twin, and as the daughter of a criminal, lends real authenticity to the sisters' voices and conflicts. And getting into the head of Lily's captor is appropriately terrifying and necessary to the narrative. In many ways, the book is reminiscent of the Brie Larson film "Room," but what I preferred about Baby Doll was its emphasis on reconnection rather than isolation - healing rather than breaking down. Packed with fantastic twists and powerful, nuanced characters, Baby Doll is an addictive read. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • A good debut novel
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed reading this novel, it was a decent read. Not amazing but written well enough that I can say it's a solid 4 stars, especially for a debut novel. The basic plot is that Lily is abducted at age 16 and held for eight years before she escapes. It's the story of her recovering but also about how her family dealt with her missing and her return. It's not on par with "Room" by Emma Donoghue or "Still Missing" by Chevy Stevens, both of which were similar in plot but deeper, faster paced, more emotional I guess. I think her writing will only improve and I'm looking forward to her next book. ... show more

  • Hooked From the First Page
Format: Kindle
I haven’t read a Hollie Overton book yet…but this one was amazing! Hooked from the first page…I couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait to find more from this author!

  • Interesting story, simplistic writing
Format: Kindle
The essence of the story, a woman who escapes her kidnapper and tries to adjust to normal life with her family, is very interesting, and had me hooked from the beginning. But as the story evolved, and although I naturally wanted to see how it ended, the writing style bothered me more and more. It is hard to explain what exactly I did not like, but basically it seems to be a book aimed at Young Adults, not of course the story itself, which is a difficult one, but rather the way in which it is written. ... show more

  • I enjoyed how quickly we moved from character to character
Format: Hardcover
Compelling and captivating debut novel! It starts with a bang and just keeps going - I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed how quickly we moved from character to character, giving me more of a 360-view of the world and the plot, and it explored areas like the bonds between sisters, between parents and children, in ways I haven't seen before. Definitely give it a read! ... show more

  • Seizing you with suspense & characters for which you genuinely care
Format: Hardcover
I miss reading, and have lost my fervor for it since grad school with its deluge of assignments. But Baby Doll got me back on track. From the first page it had me going, giving up that extra hour of sleep or internet/tv browsing. Hollie Overton is a very thoughtful writer with a talent to dangle, entertain, but above all to tell an open-hearted story. Enlisting the reader's imagination and the grim realities too prevalent in our culture, she tells a tale of survival without sensationalizing gruesome details that might ultimately minimize the horror of Lily's experience. It is a story of flawed, distinct and beautifully strong women, learning to find their way back to each other through a wall of pain with what the world most need now: Love. ... show more

  • Gripping. Dangerous. Oddly comforting.
Format: Hardcover
It's an odd irony that for a novel dealing with some really uncomfortable issues, Hollie Overton writes comfort so very well. Sprinkled within a terrifying narrative, there are moments of such comfort and family bonding that I immediately wanted to check in with my sisters. I read this book cover to cover at one go because the pacing is absolutely perfect. It turns pages so quickly, and it does so with a clarity that grabs hold of the reader's hand and leads them through a complicated story so quickly and swiftly that I was so bummed when it was over. It made me love my family more, it made me want to put them all in my pockets and keep them closer. It's a great read. ... show more

  • Not That Much Of A Thriller But Still Enjoyable
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed this book and found that I didn't want to put it down. There is bad language sprinkled throughout which I thought wasn't needed and a few sex scenes described but not in detail. I wouldn't compare this book to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train, I felt it was very different from either of those. It didn't have as much mystery as Gone Girl and was more involved than Girl on the Train. I felt the characters in this book were very interesting in the ways that they were different. I don't think I'd label this book as tense or a thriller or even that suspenseful but I did enjoy it and would recommend it (as long as you don't mind the occasional use of bad language). ... show more
