I had to leave the hood over the feed trough off for a few months so the chickens would realize there was food in it. Then put it on to help keep manure out of the feed. Works well with crumbles - little waste. Top comes completely off for easy filling.

Update- it holds 40lbs. I dumped what I could into this with a 50lbs bag. I then dumped the rest into a 10lbs feeder filling it… I like this, I’m ordering a second one for my chickens. I bought the first one for my turkey coop. I feed 50lbs bags and this holds probably 45lbs maybe a little over. Definitely not 50lbs worth of turkey starter pellets. Honestly the headline says it all… I mounted my feeder on the door with wire ties to test it out before a hard instal and it’s absolutely amazing! Adding a little caulk with the one piece to assemble is needed to keep all the weather out and a piece some flex seal tape on the lid and this feeder just works. I own 3 of the 50 lbs feeders and it handles 40-50 birds easily per feeder. As a side note; Meat birds need 1 per 15-20 birds max and turkeys 1 feeder to 6-8 birds max. They tend to scrap a bit with each other if not enough of their heads can fit in the feed well. In my photo I place plastic tray upside down so the can reach the feed well. At night I pull the tray so the rats cannot enter the feeder. I have saved over $300 in feed the past 2 months and this feeder is worth every penny and very well built. One down side note… I was missing one packet of screws to assemble the front face on one of my feeders but my local Home Depot had what I needed. I hope this helps ! I usually use the bucket style feeders with pvc ports. I like them but wanted to try something that would hold more feed. Seems I am filling the bucket style feeders every few days. This feeder is easy to fill and hold 35 pounds of layer pellets - definately not 50. No way. But, 35 is fine. Feed area is covered by a hood and it does keep the rain out. The feed trough area is deep enough and with the little bars that go across it in 3 places makes it hard for the hens to toss the feed out all over the place. trough gravity refills great. Feed flows easy. I am very picky about my hen feeders as most allow a lot of feed waste. This one is doing a great job so far. I sit it on blocks about 6 inches off the ground and this seems to allow my roosters and hens to access the trough easily. I recommend this feeder.
