First, this did have a smell coming out of the box--almost like that of gasoline. However, it dissipated quickly and I found nothing (no lint nor residue) when I wiped down the pieces. Also, this is very heavy and well-designed. Our kid's last bed broke in 3 places at soldering points after years of use--all the soldering broke in the same place, so we were looking for a new frame with ample space for storage underneath. We took a gamble and got this one and have only positives. Here they are: *It has great storage and because there are no 45 degree angle brace bars, all the the underbed space can be used. *It is tall enough that the footlocker is now stored under the bed. *The metal is heavy and strong. *The slats are put into place at soldered joints--but the soldering seems well done and across sufficient area. *The directions are clear and the assembly is almost intuitive. *The middle brace strengthened the middle joint on the side pieces. Overall, this is a well-made frame and I am comfortable having my kiddo on it. Tips: *18" is tall! Make sure the person using this bed is tall enough to get on the bed with the mattress on top the frame. *after doing step one, make sure they are at the correct angle--keep the screws a tad loose to make sure of this at first, then feel free to fully tighten them as you get the two side pieces correctly positioned into either head or foot of the bed ... show more
