I had a very small, very weak, easily overheated, crosscut, cheapo shredder. I shred anything that has even as little as my name or address on it and it simply wasn't doing the job. My concern was price vs features. Look at any office supply store (Office Depot, Staples, etc) and you'll quickly figure out that you can't find a microcut shredder that compares to this one for twice the price. I knew I wanted to step up to microcut, wanted something with a decent sized bin and needed something that could handle more than a few pages at once. This shredder: -It's Microcut, and a good particle size. To get much better you have to get the "classified" shredders and those are too expensive for personal use, I think. -Has a large bin/capacity (it's almost as tall as my desk, which I didn't quite expect) and the pull out bin is easier to empty than the kind where you lift the cutter head off the top. -It works without overheating, (something I'm not used to) despite the large amount of items I shred. -I can actually put an entire, unopened, piece of junk mail in and it shreds it. I wouldn't do much more than that at once though. -It's significantly less loud than my last shredder (or any of the ones I've used at the office). -I was afraid for the bargain price it would cheap-made junk. It isn't as far as I can tell. Made well, works great. Other Notes: -Some reviewers have mentioned getting it at Sam's Club, but I don't have a membership and it was out of stock when I ordered this anyway. -Some reviewers talked about an odd noise (I'd say it sounds like glasses klinking in the dishwasher), it does do this sometimes, but is apparently normal and doesn't bother me. -Sometimes the auto-shut off feature turns the motor/blades off just as I'm putting the next paper or envelope in the feed ramp. It realizes something is there and kicks back on, but I wish they had made the timer just a second or so longer. If you are looking for an affordable, medium/large bin, higher paper count capacity, microcut shredder at a good price, I can't recommend a better option. There's some others out there that are comparable, but much more expensive and the ones close this price point are all lacking in some way (usually pages at a time it can handle or bin capacity). ... show more

    • Fantastic Schredder: Maintenance Note: 2 Optical Sensors

I've had this shredder for about 16 months. Over that time I've disposed of dozens of file boxes filled with out dated, but sensitive documents (most with staples), hundreds of software CDs and all expired credit cards. It is rugged, forgiving, pays no mind to stapled materials, and much quieter than any other non-commercial shredded I've had. Yes, if you feed it max sheets continuously for 15 minutes it will get warm and shut down to protect itself from damage. But hey, this is not a $1000 commercial shredder. Yes, when you tip the unit you will hear the sound of metal parts clanking together. That's not bad. It's just part of the feed mechanism. They sound loose but they are supposed to move freely and do not clank when the unit is in use in a normal, vertical position. If you ever clean the feed sensor, you'll see 2 thin black metal tubes and the sound will make sense. The unit has 2 sets of optical sensors. Lower quality models use mechanical switches to sense material in the shred path and a full bin. These can get broken, or fail as small plastic things do. Over time the optical sensors do get a layer of paper dust on them and need to be cleaned with a q-tip. The bin full sensors are on the bottom of the shredder head and easily accessed by simply removing the bin. They are located just to the back of the shredder teeth, a little to the opposite side of the power switch and look like 2 little holes 1/2 inch apart. Cleaning the the feed path sensors requires removing the shredder head (2 screws in the bin) and opening the head case (6 screws from the bottom). If your unit stops working after a shredding thousands of sheets, clean these first. It will take you 10 minutes tops, and is the most likely reason the unit stops. This is the best shredder I've ever had and a bargain at this price. ... show more

I have not had this long enough to do complete review but first impressions are great. Noise: This shredder is quiet, very quiet. Tinkling noise, really? Yes mine makes the same noise but this is a SHREDDER people! My last shredder might have made a tinkling noise also but who would have known over the other racket it put out. Security: As others have mentioned in this day in age one must be careful about identity theft. Although I live in the middle of nowhere and can't imagine anyone sitting down at the local dump putting my papers back together in the chance they may find something. I opted for the micro cut shredder this time around, after all, who knows. After looking at the output of this baby all I can say is have at it, your time must be worth nothing to you! Wheels, draw, size, etc.: The wheels are a nice touch, it is heaver and larger than any previous shredder I have owned. It was heavy enough that I was glad the UPS guy carried it to the door for me. There is a nice draw that pulls out to empty the shredding's, I am not sure how well that will work once it is filled up but for now it is not a concern. Would I recommend it to my friends? As of right now I would highly recommend it. It does the job I bought it for and does it well. It looks solid and well built and I expect it will last a good long time, having said that I will not be shredding phone books or using it for hours & hours & hours at a time. I do not expect I will ever run it long enough to over heat as someone claimed to have done. If that was my need I would have bought something larger. ... show more
