Fixed length makes it impossible to change position on car's side rails -- you're limited to one position, can't increase the distance between them for longer loads. They don't seem to grip the side rails very well, either -- don't think I'd trust them with much of a load.

Overall quality of these roof rack crossbars is pretty good. They almost look factory. My main complaint is I have a Subaru CrossTrek and the instruction manual that came with the crossbars specified they are for a Subaru Forester, no mention of a Cross Trek.The description on website when ordering said they would fit a 2014-2020 Forester, 2013-2020 Cross Trek. I tried calling customer service several times to verify they would properly fit my Cross Trek and was NOT able to contact anyone. I gambled the crossbars would fit and they did but not quite the way I would have liked. They DO NOT tighten down flush to the factory roof racks. Hopefully they will not be noisy at highway speeds. For the most part I am pleased with how well made the crossbars are and would rate them 4 out of 5. UPDATE ON ROAD NOISE, I've ONLY driven around town at speeds UNDER 40 miles an hour and these crossbars create A LOT of road noise. ... show more
