Description

This is Rokinon's newest fisheye lens for Canon. It features some great new features that are not available on Rokinon's first highly rated 8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens. Optics and glass are high definition (HD) with very clear & sharp images. This lens also features a removable hood which can make it easier for use on full frame cameras. While this lens is designed for APS-C sensors, full frame users can now use it without the hood. On APS-C cameras like the Canon 60D, 7D and T3i, the pictures will fill the entire frame or screen. On full frame cameras like the Canon 5D, the lens will produce pictures with a semi-circular image and close images will appear proportionately large for a dramatic effect.

  • Surprisingly competent lens for the price.
Style: Nikon DSLR
Had a "Super Wide angle" lens many years back and loved it. I wanted to get the same type lens for my Nikon but the cost of the Nikon lens was just more than I cared to spend based on my needs. Then I found this lens. I spent a lot of time reading reviews all over the web. Seems this lens is sold under a lot of different names and there are a lot of different models of it. Its hard reading the descriptions to know just what you are getting. I would recommend you to to the manufacturer's website and view their catalog if you have any questions. This lens is for the Nikon and it has the "chip" to make it work with some functions with the camera. Yes, its manual focus but honestly, you don't do much focusing with a lens like this. You can just sort of guess the distance and set it for something close to that and be fine. Of course with a digital you can just shoot some test shots and set it up that way also. This Nikon model with the "chip" does share info with the camera so its very easy to use both with and without a flash. When properly set it will set the aperture automatically. Also I find it to work very well metering automatically with my flash. I am using this lens on both a Nikon D5200 and a D7100. I normally just set the camera to Auto ISO and use the "P" (Program) setting. At most I have only had to make minor adjustments in flash power on more close up type photos. This lens seems to work very well with both of my cameras. How good are the photos? Well, they are great for what I need. I work on a ship and needed photos taken in very confined spaces like the engine room. This lens was just perfect for doing extreme wide angle shots as well as close ups. Clarity is very good as is color. In some recent photos I did I noted that when I enlarged some of the photos I could easily read the text on items ten or fifteen feet away. It was quite impressive. I have used more expensive lens that did no better but cost much more. There are several models of this lens so take your time and pick the one that is right for you. You can buy if without the "chip" and save a few bucks but considering the small difference in price and how well the "chipped"" model works I would go with this one. Also you can buy it with a fixed (built in) hood or a removable hood like this one. I went with the removable hood as I also use this on my full frame camera and I wanted to be able to shoot without hoot if I wanted. (Be warned...the front element of the lens protrudes out and you need to be careful about getting too close to things). If you use Light Room you can do some computer magic on the photos you take with this lens. I use the lens correction feature and correct much of the curved lines you can get up close. you should experiment with the settings to get the results you want. I think I normally use something like a "Nikon 10mm Fisheye" listing and it cleans up the photos pretty well automatically. I love what I can do with this lens and wonder why I didn't buy one sooner! I would buy this again without hesitation. The lens has more uses than you might think. Fact is if you like photography and like to experiment or if you need a lens that you can use for super wide shots in confined spaces then this is the lens for you. It does the job and you just can not beat the price. Great value and very useful, the perfect combination. ... show more

  • Solid Lens with Good Optical Performance
Style: Canon DSLR
I received this lens about one hour ago, so have had little experience so far. Just out of the box, the lens looked well made with a good removable lens cap. The lens cap clicks into place, and its cover clips on securely. Other uses have reported that the cap did not click and the cover could fall off. Perhaps Rokinon has made improvements here. The lens produced good sharp pictures at lens openings below f/5.6. F/5.6 was also pretty good, but f/3.5 was not as sharp, but probably adequate for situations were that lens opening is needed. I was very impressed with its sharpness in the corners at f/8. I have only one criticism, for which I did not deduct a star from my rating - The lens may not focus all the way to infinity, but I am not sure about this pending further experiments. As expected, I had trouble focusing the lens, particularly in low light, even when I used live view on my Canon 70D with 10x magnification. This may have contributed to the lack of sharpness at f/3.5, and to my doubts about infinity focus. I expect to use the distance scale instead of trying to focus the lens. (This is no surprise; other reviewers have suggested the same.) Edited 7/2015 after using for one year+ Contrary to what I said earlier, the lens does focus to infinity. I find it impossible, but unnecessary, to focus through the viewfinder. Even at a fairly wide aperture such as f/5.6, the depth of field is so vast that I simply leave the lens set at about 8 feet, unless my subject is very close. In that case, I set the approximate distance on the lens's distance scale. Results are almost always very sharp, even in the corners. Occasionally, I get a shot that isn't. This may be because I accidentally disturbed the distance scale or didn't hold the camera steady enough in dim light. I have had good results "defishing" the photos with software. I estimate that this results in an effective focal length of 6-7mm. However, the angle of view is so extreme that I don't often like the results. And the corners of a defished photo are not quite a sharp, but for me this does not matter. ... show more

  • Great value, fun to photograph with, extremely useful in cramped quarters or photographing large objects
Style: Nikon DSLR
My first true fisheye after being an avid photographer for nearly 50 years. So far I've only used it adapted onto my Micro 4/3 Lumix GX85, where it's 140 degrees rather than the 180 when I get around to throwing it on a Nikon DSLR. I love how it's usually possible to aim it to either exaggerate or minimize the fisheye effect on prominent lines in the composition. Hard to do that when going the full 180, though cropping can be your friend in that regard. Seems well made, looks impressive with the protruding convex front element. I'll scratch my own depth of field markings near the lettering, though it's not a huge concern: if you stop down a bit, depth of field is generous. This lens would be awesome for real estate photogs to show interior rooms....I can't stand house ads where a lens is used which only shows one wall or one corner of each room at a time. Especially when the room is empty, it's hard to tell even which room or wall you're looking at, without a huge angle of view like this has. That was true even of a house I had lived in. Also will give you a whole new perspective on photographing large objects in cramped quarters, such as seeing a whole swimming pool from inside its fence rather than from outside it. Or photographing your car from a foot away from your license plate, etc. ... show more

  • Works well with my daughter's nikon 3200
Style: Nikon DSLR
Works well with my daughter's nikon 3200. However it is MANUAL FOCUS only. That's a PITA but the only AF fisheye I could find is the nikkor one for like a thousand bucks. This thing is worth the money, even considering the inconvenience. Manual focus is kind of difficult on modern dslr because they don't include a focus grid. Makes it kind of hit-or-miss. ... show more
