  • No compromises.
Everything about this thing is insane, the form factor, the specs and the price. Let me preface this by saying yes, at $6.5K this thing is a lot of money and you really shouldn't buy it and just build yourself a better desktop for a quarter of the price. But, if you want something completely unique and a "laptop" that doesn't compromise on power on the go this might be worth looking at if you have the money burning a hole in your pocket. First, the box it comes in is massive, you have boxes in boxes in boxes and the unboxing experience is top tier once you get to the actual laptop box and get past the backpack part (it's kinda just in there in a plastic bag). Once you get through the box with it's slip case and strange opening experience you're greeted with the laptop, accessories, two power bricks to fully power the laptop and some niche items. You get a "dossier" (that's what ASUS calls it) that has several cardboard print-outs giving you some background on the thought process and the designing of the Mothership, this also comes in a frame that you can display on a desk. There's also a metal puzzle of the ROG logo that you can snap together to display as well. Overall the unboxing is premium as all hell. Now to get to the meat and potatoes, the machine itself, it's a beast. This thing will just power through anything you toss at it, but FIRST you must go into the Armoury Crate app that comes preinstalled and switch the GPU Mode to "Discrete," out of the box its set to "Optimus" meaning you're only running on the integrated graphics of the i9. I assume this was for battery life, but let's be real, you won't be running this on battery. After that you'll be all set up and good to go, just plug in BOTH of adapters to give the machine enough power to run at full tilt. I forgot to plug one of the adapters into the walls and was wondering why my Firestrike scores were so low, but figuring that out I was seeing scores near 24K. The Nvidia experience basically maxes out all games at 1080p and nothing save for RDR2 hits well over 60fps. RDR2 is taxing as hell, but I'm sure I can optimize some settings to always get above 60 easily. If you want a 10%~ boost to your frame rate and performance, put the Mothership into "Turbo" mode and you'll apply an overclock and the fans will kick in loud enough to compete with an airliners jet engines. Port selection is over the top and with dongle you shouldn't have issue plugging everything you need in. Also the wireless is really damn fast, getting 50Mbps downloading from Steam on Wifi is crazy, but I keep the laptop plugged in anyway. Having the fast wireless is awesome. RGB is everywhere on the laptop, I think it looks good and it's customizable so you can just turn it off if you don't like it, but you can set it to typical rainbow/raindrop/stobe/etc effects. Seeing the light come through the front speakers is cool. Speaking of the speakers, they're the loudest I've ever heard on a laptop since they're so big and facing you, but they don't sound that great. Good thing this thing comes with a backpack, because of it's size (which actually isn't that bad) you'll probably struggle finding many backpacks that fit this thing. The backpack has plenty of space for a lot of things so you could easily travel with it and plenty of other things. The backpack looks decent and isn't "too" gamer looking but it still doesn't look that professional. I would have preferred something more subtle. The other parts of the hardware are good to strange: The Keyboard is good, your typical laptop keyboard with chiclet style key travel with a nice click to them. I'm not a keyboard connoisseur so take that for what it is. The ability to remove the keyboard, fold it in half and be able to use it for hours of gaming time is ace, now your can game and move the keyboard to the left and not have to deal with the screen being off center is great. The mouse the laptop comes with is a barebones ROG Gladius II, ASUS's middle of the road gaming mouse with plenty of RGB in it to match the rest of the machine but it's strange because the thing is wired. So you have a built in wireless keyboard... but then a wired mouse? I just don't even use it. It's also made for right handed people, so you're SOL if you're a lefty. Now, with this price you'd expect everything to be peachy but there's downsides that I can't ignore: - The keyboard can get finicky when used wirelessly, dropped keypresses and phantom held keypresses happen way too often. Also the RGB lighting can freak out sometimes and not do what it's supposed to. The wireless probably has something to do with my person environment. - Turbo Mode is just insanely loud, if you plan on using this machine without headphones you're going to be sorry or you'll never use Turbo Mode, it's just way too loud. I use Sennheiser 670 Wireless headphones and I can still hear the fans through the headset though, it's not enough to not use it. Use really good noise canceling headphones for this setting. - The weight is insane, at 10lbs just for the laptop itself and almost another 5lbs for the 2 power bricks you're looking to only carry this thing in the backpack it comes with for short periods, it's hilariously heavy. This is NOT for taking to school and lugging around all of the time. - Battery life is probably abysmal, I don't use the laptop's battery at all because it's basically pointless and I have no need to but I'm sure if I did it would be laughable. - You can't use it on your lap, again, it really isn't the point of the laptop itself. - The 3 NVMe m.2 SSDS are all in RAID 0, and there's no other m.2 slots inside the laptop so you can't upgrade the storage. I mean, I guess you could undo the RAID and start from scratch but that's just a headache. Only having 1.5TB is pretty weak in this day at age of games easily taking up 100~GB. In the end, do I recommend this? Yes, If your budget is high enough and you want something unique that is semi portable without having to lose out on power like all other gaming laptops. However, if you want something that sits at home all the time build a desktop. I take this thing over to friends houses from time to time to do some gaming and it's a laugh when it outclasses their desktops. But man does it work out those back muscles transporting it. It's the equivalent to a super car: expensive, looks good, limited but practical? No, it'll spend a lot of time doing basic things and going the speed limit but when it kicks into full gear there's nothing else like it. ... show more

  • Was great for a Year, then became a $7k Brick
I had purchased this computer directly from Asus about a year ago. First is it solid preforming, that also produces a lot of heat. I ended up placing a desk fan directly behind it to help cool off the aluminum case, that doubles as a heat sink of sorts. I primary used it for video editing, graphic, and 3D modeling, with gaming secondary. At the time of purchase, I traveled a lot. About a month ago while updating drivers, the computer randomly shutdown in the middle of the update. Upon starting up again, my raid 0 had crashed and would only start to BOIS. Contacted Asus support for help on getting documentations to reset up the RAID. Spent two weeks emailing Asus support (they have a 2-4 day turn around time to reply) and dealing with their complete incompetence on how computers work. Thankfully I was able to the documentation by digging around Asus website (tech support should have just forward me that link, instead of wasting my time). Went to start up the computer and it wouldn’t even post. Opened it up to see if anything obviously was damaged and also reapply some fresh thermal pasted. Noticed on the CPU that the liquid metal was spread out all over the containment area of the die. The gravity was clearly pulling it away from the die and was pooling at the bottom. Was great while it lasted, but poor value for how short it lived. Unfortunately it’s also out of warranty ... show more

  • Crysis unplayable
This CANNOT play Crysis on ultra settings. And that’s a game from almost a decade ago.

  • ASUS Support no help
"ASUS SUPPORT" has stated in another question that the Mothership has a MAX-Q RTX 2080 graphics. It does not. The description states clearly TDP: 200 watt.
