  • AMAZING quality/mechanical caveats
I wanted to wait before writing my review until I had some time to understand this extraordinary tool. Admittedly, I also wanted to also look for whatever defects might materialize through use. Purchased in May 2020, and having used this on a number of shoots, I'm ready to talk. First, this is an extraordinary piece of engineering that delivers the clearest sound imaginable on stage and location. Its size and weight preclude using this handheld for pretty much anything as far as I am concerned. But that's why God made C stands, grip heads, sandbags, and boom pole supports. What I do not like is the suspension system for the NTG8 when using in the blimp (with its required extension). Rode tech support was fairly cooperative in trying to get me the hardware that was needed to prevent the distal end of the microphone from bouncing off of the interior of the blimp. After some correspondence (ok, a lot) they sent replacement "rubber bands" for the shock mount in the pistol grip. Going back and forth for a month or two was ultimately not worth the aggravation and I decided not to use this shotgun for location work. Looking back at this issue, I am not certain if tech support simply did not understand my issue or did not want to (probably the case). For example, if I asked multiple questions in one email, they would answer one. This was extremely frustrating. I asked them to assemble a system to mimic what I was experiencing so that they could debug it in their shop. For whatever reason, they did not. This left me to write detailed messages with accompanying images to explain the problems. The bands they sent did not bring the NTG8 anywhere near close to the center of the blimp as the microphone is simply too heavy. From what I can tell, RODE is going to have to modify the shock mount system on the pistol grip used in the blimp. They need at least one, if not two, "rubber band mounting systems" added to the grip. If you are not going to use this microphone on location, you can save yourself some cash by not buying the blimp, blimp extension, and cat. For me, those accessories proved to be a total waste of cash. Also, the NTG8 travels in a reusable aluminum carry tube. It would be nice to be able to insert a package of silica gel in the airtight tube. But as things stand, this is currently not possible. If you are packing up after shooting in a humid environment, you are going to want to come up with a plan to attend to condensation and/or occult moisture for this and all of your gear. Would I recommend the Rode NTG8 to anyone? If you are using in a studio or indoor space of any kind where clarity and breadth of recorded sound is an issue, yes and you will not be sorry. If you think you are going to use this on location, you might want to think three times. ... show more
