Description

The Rockwell 4-1/2” Compact Circular Saw is an effective and hassle-free replacement for a traditional circ saw. Just grab it and go when you need to make some quick rip or plunge cuts—no need to lug out the bulky full-size saw. Even though it has the functionality to handle all sorts of projects, this saw was made for 2” lumber, cutting 2x4s in a single pass. Its lightweight design (only 5 lbs) allows for better control of the tool so you can operate it with just one hand. And it makes overhead cutting much more of a possibility than with a full-size saw. The grip is comfortable to use for extended periods. And the smaller blade allows the 5-amp motor to spin it up to 3,500 rpm, achieving the speeds of much larger saws while putting less strain on the motor for more efficient energy usage and increased life of the tool. The easy to access depth adjustment lever allows for a maximum cutting depth of 1-11/16” at 90. While the bevel lever lets you make the most common angled cuts from 0-45, with a maximum cutting depth of 1-1/8” on those cuts. Again, this saw excels at 2x4s, but is also awesome on plywood, hardwood flooring, pegboard, dowels, molding and more. Comes with one 24T TCT blade, a parallel guide, vacuum adapter, and blade key.

  • Great saw for smaller jobs...earned a spot in my inner circle of tools.
Style: Circular saw
I've used a larger 7 1/2 inch Dewalt circular saw for years. But now it's getting cobwebs because of this Rockwell RK3441K compact saw. This compacts saw is so darn handy, lays easily in my tool bag, is more convenient than my larger traditional circular saw to tot around that it's becoming my go-to saw for small to intermediate cuts in wood and metal. It has a nice /precise /quality rip fence and angle cut feature and the knobs are quick and secure to set any angle cut. I particularly love the blade being on the left side of the drive. This dramatically increased my vision over the cut so it's safer, more accurate, user friendly and better results. My hands are average size (size 8-9 glove size Large) and I find the grip size /surface & design easy to hold on to and user friendly. For small hands this might be a challenge. The trigger pull is less complicated that other saws this size with makes this model Rockwell easier to operate and control while cutting than all other saws this size...in my opinion. The blade turns as a slower RPM than my full size Dewalt, but if you slow down your feed this saw handles anything I throw it's way giving a clean crisp cut and does not bog down. For big tough jobs simply use a bigger saw. The blade I found Best for all around cuts in wood /metal /longevity was a Freud D0436X Diablo 4-3/8-Inch 36 Tooth ATB Cordless Trim Saw Blade that I've used with no issues at all. I am not easy to impress, but this compact medium duty Rockwell has earned its way into my inner circle of tools. I am Very pleased with the quality features, portability and durability of this handy saw. Recommend this without reservations and consider the hundred dollar cost a fair value. ----UPDATE---- Have used this Rockwell saw for several months now and and it's still rock solid. No issues at all. The adjustable guide fence is real handy,...quick and secure adjustment lever,...easy to make quick /secure fence adjustments. I've also used this saw in unconventional situations where I had to remove material from wood in such a way I was able to turn the saw over, expose the blade and carefully angle the wood into the blade to free-hand & create a router type effect. It was the only way to finish a particular cut and this saw has the flexibility to help. Never know what you'll run into during a project and glad this saw has extra flexibility to adapt. Continues to earn my unqualified recommendation! ... show more

  • Nice alternative to table saw for smaller jobs
Style: Circular saw
I have had this saw now for a few days and have used it a lot. It works great. I had tried one that my neighbor has and knew I would like it. It is not real heavy, no more than my jig saw. The blade goes in easily. Read the instructions . Always helps. It cuts great and fast and has a place where you can attach a shop vac, which takes care of the sawdust. It provides a little attachment to go on the saw, you attach the hose to that. Snap. I am 73 years old and it is easy for me to use and I feel completely safe using it. One feature I like is that the allen wrench you use to attach the blade stores handily on the saw handle. You always have it when you need it. I use it to cut pallet wood for making furniture and wall hangings. Saves me a bunch of time. I would never even approach a table saw, so this was a no brainer. ... show more

  • Good tool for specific uses, with some limits.
Style: Circular saw
Overall, a good saw that fits a particular purpose. I just used it to cut formica counter (from the backside) and it did very well. Yet, there are a few weaknesses. First, it is clearly a right handed device. To turn it on requires pressing a red safety switch and then engaging the trigger. This is relatively easy to do with the right hand (if your hand is big enough and in the optimal position) but very awkward to to with the left hand. I'm left handed and I've abandoned efforts to use this saw with my left hand. Also, the cutting guide is not accurate and I find I really need to look at the blade itself (reinforcing the need to hold the saw with the right hand). You can do plunge cuts, but it is a bit tricky because the device really isn't designed to made accurate plunge cuts. Last, I wish the front of the device was shorter in front of the blade so that cuts toward a wall other impediment could actually get closer to the wall. But, there are reasons they made the device the way they did, partly to accommodate an edge guide attachment, and partly to allow for compound (angled) cuts. So, probably can't have it all. I did notice that some people complained about the screw that holds the blade being easy to break. I think this is an issue derived from the fact that the screw has reverse threads (need to turn the opposite way from normal). This is to prevent the screw from loosening itself with sawing motion. If someone is not aware of the reverse threads and tries to use brute force to remove the screw then they could break it. But, if you know about the threads and use reasonable force I suspect there is little chance of actually breaking the screw. The screw does have symbols indicating the correct turning directions but people are not normally used to checking the screw for direction of turn; so, it would be very easy to think brute force is needed for a "stuck" screw. ... show more

  • Small Circular Saws
Style: Circular saw
I more or less hate reviews on something and by someone who has absolutely no experience with whatever it is, but the shipping was great, etc. I won't bore the reader with the shipping by Amazon, although if I did, I would say it was phenomenal, and ask forgiveness for this digression. My experience with the saw is minimal, but sometimes one can extrapolate other things from, uh, other things. I also have a Rockwell Versacut, purchased at a pawn shop cheaply. My experience with it is also minimal, but in spite of reviews criticizing its handle angle and lack of beveling ability, I look forward to using it a lot in the future. I will say the same about this saw. I'm somewhat of a fan of small circular saws of which these both are, my experience being limited to Makita cordless iterations. I love those too, but they have nowhere near the power of these, and the blade is on the right side as is typical of their larger brethren. I like the blade on the left, and to qualify my opinion somewhat, I have both a larger "sidewinder" circular saw, and a full size worm drive saw, each with the blade on the right and left respectively. I also have two Dewalt cordless circular saws, one a five and something inch and the other a six and a half inch, both with blades on the left. Enough on blade orientation and my preferences thereof. This saw appears to be a quality device. For cutting tongue and groove boards or mdf, especially indoors, I think these types are the best, certainly better than my full sized worm drive saw. I anticipate other uses too over time, so, although I wouldn't want to be without a full size circular saw for certain purposes, I wouldn't want to be without this (or these). By the way, unlike the Versacut, this saw has a most obvious blade lock, and also adjusts for bevel cuts. The only possible negative, if it were, is that the four and a half inch blades seem to be unavailable at some large home improvement centers, but might be available only online as a propriety item. No matter really, but thought I'd mention it. I would buy this saw again, even with this limited experience. I like it that much. ... show more

  • Generally a great tool
Style: Circular saw
I bought this saw to aid in updating my 100+ yo house. Some of that work has involved removing portions of the drywall over plaster walls & ceilings. This saw is light enough to use for this purpose. I set the cutting depth so I don't cut beyond the lathing strips which means I'm unlikely damage anything hiding in the stud cavities, unlike the live wire I cut through with my Sawzall. "No honey, I don't know why those lights don't work anymore." I can't say if it's a precise cut or not, I don't think my situations for cutting are conducive to accuracy. Being a smaller saw, it doesn't present difficulties with maneuvering. I suspect that size will be a disadvantage if you're going for long straight cuts. My only real complaint is the dust port could be better. The vacuum adapter disconnects too easily, I need to duct-tape it to the saw so it doesn't constantly fall off. The adaptor doesn't easily mate up to my vacuum. The dust port is crucial to me as I'm working on the house I live in. I inevitably have to tape the vacuum hose to the adapter. I don't use the saw often, but when I do, I'm happy to have this saw. Were I buying now, I'd put this one at the top of my list. However, I may also go for a cordless option. Guess it would come down to budget. ... show more

  • So far it's working
Style: Circular saw
When it works, it works well. Smooth straight cuts, can handle thick stock (but you have to go very slow to not bog down the small motor). My take is 3/4" ply is about as thick as you want go go. - I accidentally cut 1.25" ply when I cut a sheet of 3/4 laid over a 1/2" sheet, it was slow going but it did it, too slow in my opinion. Might be ok for 2x4's as long as you don't need to cut a lot of them. - 3/4" ply is fine, not super fast but gets the job done reasonably well. You can see from the videos that 1/2" stock is where this thing really shines, so my take is 1/2" to 3/4" stock is the sweet spot for this saw. - the parallel guide is great (but don't overtighten the bolt, this is not a heavy duty tool), makes it almost almost as good as a small table saw for getting straight cuts. - based on other reviews I was careful to not bog down the motor or hit anything that would suddenly stop the blade. - I didn't use the low-tooth blade that came with it, I used 120T ply blades for everything (including maple), those cut smoother and don't bind up as easily, I wonder if that's why others have seen the main drive bolt break. Overall it's a lighter duty tool, the small, lightweight, easy-to-handle nature is it's appeal, and it's a winner there for me as long as it will last. I'll only break out the bigger saws when needed, which won't be most of the time. ... show more

  • Great little saw!
Style: Circular saw
We bought this Rockwell as a gift to a young man who has done some work around our place. I've had one for several years and he had used it while doing some renovations on a couple of properties we have. He was continually praising it, and he owns several Milwaukee power tools. At one point after using it he stated "Milwaukee needs to step up their game!" I bought this one for less than the one I bought at Lowes four years ago and about $25 less than Lowes has them now. • OK, but limited and not a lot of other options to consider.
Style: Circular saw
After much comparison with this versus the Versacut model, I selected this one for what I needed to do. First thing is that as some have said, it isn't going to make a thick cut without issues because the blade is so thin so plan on being able to make multiple passes and increasing the depth each time. To that end, plan as well on having a good secure fence or straight edge to guide the saw as you need to keep fair down pressure as well as keeping it square against the fence. This gets even more challenging when you have to make multiple cuts that start and end with a plunge (pull out at end) I finally did my first true test today though I intentionally cut a little short so I could make a full practice cut all the way down. I went about a 1/4" per cut and it seemed to do well and when I got through, the cut edge was smooth with no witness marks left at the interim steps. I was pleased with that. In addition to having to plunge, I also have to control the max cut depth very closely so I cut through the wood but don't cut into metal bracing below the wood. (this is a unique re-purposing project to turn an old mill table into something a bit more fancy). The issue I ran into is that there is some flex in the height of the blade due to the way the miter pivot point is designed. Be aware of this and do test runs if your depth is critical. The last issue I ran into was because the opening for the blade is so wide, I ended up with a lot of splintering on the top edge and being the cosmetic edge, that wasn't good. Thankfully I actually discovered that before my first test cut so I was able to address that by layering a thin piece of sacrificial wood between the saw and the work piece and I made it large enough so it ran under my edge guide so one set of clamps held everything. Because of the nature of what I am cutting, the final saw cut has to be extremely clean, straight and plum. the very ends where I have to plunge will be taken care of with a good sharp wood chisel and lots of time. I think this will get me there as long as I don't try to rush it but I wish there was a more robust tool I could work with. It would be nice if you could purchase blades with a thicker kerf and wider cut but it appears all the brands run the same. I though of buying one of the better aftermarket blades but so far this one is working given the depth per cut limitations Since there isn't much else on the market as far as these little saws go I would likely figure on purchasing this one again but if I ever get some play time I might actually look to make an entirely new shoe mechanism. ... show more
