  • FYI for new bee & bee owners
This is my third native bee house. Don’t give up! It took a full year to get my first hotel guests. It really helps if you have blooming flowers very close by. For instance, I have different lavenders under or near my hotels. So when a lady bee comes floating by she sees everything her babies will need when they leave their ‘room’. Make it easy, and they’ll come. Also, it’s a matter of timing. My (9b zone) native bees start to trickle in sometime early spring, as soon as the lavender and orange trees nearby are in full bloom. My lavender is budding up now but the oranges have a way to go so I know my natives aren’t out and about yet, just local honey bees. Good luck, and thanks for helping the bees! Update (Aug 2023): Sadly, the design of this does not work for my microclimate. I opened it to check on them and the babies were basically just fodder for parasitic wasps. No clue when it happened, but it looks like the heat of summer warped the plexi glass. :( It’s not a complete loss as I have two bamboo tube style hotels for the other 2/3 of the bees so I’ll still have orchard bees next year. And parasitic wasps are great for the garden. I just feel so bad for the baby bees. I feel like a terrible steward. I didn’t realize how little heat plexi glass can take - and we get pretty warm here. So that’s my advice: if your summer temps go above 100f, pass on this style - or make sure to bring them inside where they can be protected - as soon as they’re done laying eggs. ... show more

  • Bees love it!
Purchased this about a month ago when I started noticing the bees arrive. They always seem to like our front porch so I placed it there. They seem to really like it and have been working hard to fill it with baby mason bees. I’ve really enjoyed watching their progress. They seem to like the smaller size vs. the larger hole size that was labeled as the side for mason bees. ... show more

  • Looks great, but the bees aren't interested
The product is well made and looks great, but the bees don't seem interested. I've moved it to several locations around my property where I've seen bees hanging out and even bated it with a bit of sugar water and diluted lavender oil and still nothing. Hopefully other buyers have more luck than I've had! ... show more

I have to buy screws for the hinges because they were not included.

  • Novelty at best
The plexiglass holes didnt line up and one hole had three attempts made by whoever drilled it. Craftsmanship is amateurish at best, and the parts are not aligned. Also there were insects, living insects, inside the box. Little spiders. Not worth the hassle to return but if you are looking for toy or novelty item this may suit. ... show more

  • Well Mad, But I Am Still Waiting for "Visitors"
I love nature and enjoy being outside. I also believe that bees are crucial to our survival, and I wanted to do something to be able to both observe them and give them shelter. That is why I wanted to try Rivajam’s Native Bee Observatory. This observatory is easy to assemble and is attractive, well made and sturdy. It is made of fir wood and is covered with wax to protect it from the elements. It is comprised of two sides, each drilled with different sizes tunnels for different sized bees, and each is secured with a sturdy but easy to unlatch fastener to keep it closed. Each side of bee tunnels is covered with plexiglass, so that I may observe the bees without disturbing them. I had no trouble with assembly. This bee observatory comes with a cleaning brush. Sadly, although I installed it two weeks ago, I have had no “visitors.” ... show more

  • Nice Simple Design
The design is very simple, but interesting. I like the idea of being able to open it and view the holes through the acrylic. Hopefully I get some bees to move in. Having the acrylic panels easily removable is good for cleaning in the winter. The wood is unfinished which is good for the inside but the outside needs something. I added a sealer on the exterior surfaces. Prior to sealing i jazzed it up a bit and laser etched a design on the front. I am not s fan of dual keyed mounting holes. You are better off drilling a hole in the gap between the roof and hinged panel to mount. That way you get a clamping force on the box so it doesn’t rock in the wind. Overall I like the viewable design and hope it attracts some bees. With the simple design it is slightly overpriced ($40 at time of review). Since it is not finished you do have the opportunity to customize the house. ... show more

  • Looks great
This bee house looks great. The wood feels sturdy and has a nice, natural look. Assembly is very easy: you only need to screw the two plastic shields in over the inside. The hinge feels like it will last for a while and the latch that holds the house shut feels equally as durable. There are two mounting points pre-attached to the back. Overall, this bee house has a solid feel and a natural look. It gives you the ability to safely look in on any bees that move in (safe both for you and the bees). ... show more
