  • Much better aesthetically but install configuration may need to be different from Gen 1
Style: 2-Pack Contact Sensor
I finally pulled the trigger on purchasing the security system to go with my 6 wired stick up cams and I am glad I waited for second generation for aesthetic reasons alone. These sensors are much less bulky and accessing the batteries will be easier that Gen 1 IF YOU INSTALL THEM CORRECTLY. In my mind I originally wanted to place the sensor side on the frame of the window's outer casing with the logic that the sensor should be stationary and the smaller magnetic side should move with the window pane but this was problematic because to access the batteries, i would have to slide the sensor to the left but it is right next to the corner of the wall. I installed that one incorrectly and will need to eventually pull off the sensor and swap the sensor and magnetic strip. The rest I installed so the sensor was on the window pane's frame and that resolved the issue. *see pictures* Also worth noting, the Gen2 sensors seem to be more sensitive than the Gen1, which I see as a plus. When the sensor and the magnet are perfectly aligned, it only takes a little more than an inch of travel to trip the Gen 2. Some of my Gen1 sensors take almost 2.5 - 3 inches to trip. ... show more

  • Badly designed and not an improvement on 1st gen sensors
Style: 2-Pack Contact Sensor
I love the Ring alarm system so it pains me to leave this review, but I must say that these new contact sensors are not designed well and I will be returning them and purchasing more of the 1st gen version. These are too wide to fit on my window frame (which I assume is a generic, normal window frame), and they expect you to leave an extra half inch to access the battery compartment. See photos for what I'm talking about. ... show more

  • System goes offline 1 to 2 times per hour
Style: 1-Pack Contact Sensor
I purchased 11 sensors and an 8 piece alarm system at the same time. I would have written this review on the alarm only Amazon did not allow me to write this review on the alarm where it truly belongs. The Amazon system placed this review on the sensors instead. Bottom line here is that the alarm base station that I have received is defective. I will not stay online. It has some type of electrical issue that causes it to go offline 1 or 2 times per hour. This has happened starting the very first day I set it up. I followed the online troubleshooting options from ring the first day to reset the system and try to fix the issue. This did not fix the problem. Day 2 the problem got worse and I called into Ring support. They were very nice and courteous. They did however have me simply follow the same steps the online support had me do in resetting the system to no avail. They did then have me perform a full factory reset. This did not solve the problem. Day 3, the system is now dropping offline 1 to 2 times per hour. I have tried emailing support multiple times for a follow up on what is going on and am now getting no response from Ring at all. I have a Ring Video Doorbell as well and this stays online perfectly fine. I have a dedicated fiber line internet connection in my home and an extremely robust wifi setup in my home that is overkill for a home setup. At this point I have no faith that the product is worth anything nor do I have any faith that the company cares at all about backing their products. I would not waste my time or money on anything from Ring. ... show more

  • Excellent for doors and double hung vinyl windows.
Style: 2-Pack Contact Sensor
These sensors are a fantastic upgrade from the first generation, for certain applications... They fit wonderfully on my doors and are less visible because of their smaller size. I do wish the ring logo was placed somewhere else (maybe on the side) because I would prefer it to be upright. The word RING upside down makes it look like it wasn’t designed to be installed that way. My only real complaint though would be the size of the device. In my current rental home we have single hung vinyl windows, and these devices will not attach in a convenient, non-obtrusive way. They stick out on the glass and are very visible. I decided to stick with the older version for my windows and only ordered these new ones for my doors. If you aren’t sure which ones will be best for you I encourage you to take the time to measure and tape together some cardboard or paper mock-up versions of both... just so you can place them and see how they’ll look. It’ll save you some time and stress. ... show more

  • can't recommend buying these at the moment
Style: 2-Pack Contact Sensor
there is a known issue with the batteries in these sensors so if you do plan on getting them buy extra batteries. customer service told me at this time they would not send me new batteries and that I would have to buy them myself.

  • Gen 2 has a slimmer profile but more depth
Style: 2-Pack Contact Sensor
I have both the Gen 1 and Gen 2 contact sensors. For windows, I like the Gen 2 sensors more than the Gen 1 sensors because they are smaller and a little less noticeable when looking out of a window. The height and width of the Gen 2 sensors are smaller (1st photo is a Gen 1 sensor for comparison; 2nd and 3rd photos are Gen 2 sensors). However, the depth of the sensor is greater so it may not fit some windows that the Gen 1 sensors fit on. Both Gen 1 and 2 are smaller than the equivalent sensors that I had previously with ADT. I have bottom up and top down double hung windows so had to place the sensor and magnet on the window itself so opening/closing either the top or bottom window would be detected. The packaging is more efficient on the Gen 2 sensor. The adhesive is already applied to the sensor and the magnet. Installation is quicker compared to Gen 1 in which you had to apply the adhesive strip onto the sensor and magnet first. There was not a screw on attachment as there was for Gen 1. You do need to leave some room around the sensor so you can remove it to replace the battery (whenever they eventually wear out). UPDATE 8/23/2020: Battery ran out After a mere 3 months, the battery on one of the Ring contact sensors V2 has run out completely. This seems odd as I bought the V2 sensors as soon as they came out, so they couldn't have sat on the shelves for long. None of my V1 sensors have run out of batteries. One of the other reviews mentioned that the V2 sensors run through the batteries quickly. I'll see how my other V2 sensors do. ... show more
