  • Used for sharpening
Works great with leather belt for Stropping knife edges

  • Takes material off fast
I wish the opening on the belt was larger. Limited by belt length. Larger stuff is an issue. Smaller items its perfect for. You will need to deal with ESD. It's shocking how fast you build up a charge.

  • Great tool with a few caveats.
I've had this for a few days and used it quite a bit since I got it. I have been largely grinding metal with it so far. Positives: - The overall quality is quite good. - It's quiet, no need for hearing protection. Doesn't wake up the family using it at night - Doesn't vibrate too much and the rubber feet keep it steady - Great size for an already crowded workbench Negatives: - The dust cover holes were not tapped correctly for the included screws. Ended up having to go to a hardware store, grab a few machine screws and jam them in there to hold the dust cover. - Belt sander and grinder are controlled with one shared switch. If one is on, both are on. Slightly dangerous, but more just annoying to have the belt humming constantly when it's not being used - Adjustment of the belt sander table(left side of unit) is an inexact science. The disk grinder has degree measurements on the table(right side of unit), while the belt sander does not. I had to create a 135 degree block and wedge the table up against it to get it consistent with the grinder. - Switching belts requires you to loosen three screws and slide a plastic shield off. Not super difficult, but a bit time consuming. Would definitely buy it again. The only part that really annoyed me was the screws not fitting correctly. ... show more

  • 5 starts with a safety warning.
This is an excellent machine. I have one serious warning for potential buyers and users. The gap between the disk sander and the platform on this model is two big. That is about 1/4 of an inch. It should be 8/64ths or less than 3mm. The 6mm gap or 1/4 of an inch gap is dangerous. I was working on a guitar saddle (small piece of bone) and it got sucked in my finger touched the spinning disk. Finger got a nasty cut. Saddle flew into eternity and beyond (never found). To deal with this issue.. use a sacrificial piece of wood on the flat bed (tilting platform next to the disk) and use that to get your gap very small and prevent the pieces you are working with from getting sucked in. If you compare the platform to disk distance in this model (about 1/4 of an inch or 6mm) to the Rikon 50-112 4-Inch x 36-Inch Belt 6-Inch Disc Sander version. You can see that on the Rikon 50-112 the gap is only 2.5m or about 8/64ths. The gap should be that small. You can close the gap by welding a small metal extension to the bed… but the piece of sacrificial wood will do the job to close the gap. If I had to do it again I would purchase the Rikon 50-112 or RIKON 50-114 instead. ... show more

  • RIKON Power Tools 50-151 Belt with 5" Disc Sander
There are few things that are very good about this tool. 1. brush-less induction motor in metal case – means will last very long time. 2. sealed ball bearings all over with carbon ABS wheels for belt suport 3. every screw is machine threaded and in metal, not sheet metal in plastic like many 4. solid alloy 95% of the tool with vibe protection caps for support 5. separate dust ports for belt and disc that can be hooked up to vacuum cleaner 6. heavy base with dust protected switch and vinyl cord based on braided wire 7. extremely friendly to adjust support tables from aluminum alloy 8. small footprint that can be stored anywhere 9. fairly quiet – no need for hearing protection like most belt sanders I have many power tools; some older and some newer. This 1x30 is very much like Delta used to make them 30 years ago. RIKON does have some hit and some miss now and then, but this belt sander is just very cool and well designed machine. The safety is there – you can ask 90 year old to sharpen lawn mover blade or 9 year old to sharpen a pencil on this thing. You can get 1x30 belts and 5” replacement disc in many grades real cheap and good quality as well. I would most definitely recommend this sander to anybody that need to sharpen knives, work on home projects or do any crafts or hobbies involving removal of access material from things. Good value and quality here. update 11/23/2015 sander working with no problems, tracking is very good, takes other manufacturer's belts perfectly, consistent and no vibrations, excellent tool ... show more

  • A very good find for smaller-scale work. Bearing issues after a while.
I don't have too much room for a large stationary sander, and have been previously burned after paying $100 for a woefully underpowered 5" and wobbly sander made by another company. Thankfully, the Rikon sander proved to be a pleasant surprise: it's sturdy, well-made, easy to use, powerful, and it's more than you would expect for that price. It chews through hard woods and aluminum with ease; very little vibration, and the dust collection system is pretty good, too. My only minor gripe is that it takes some work to change belts: instead of some sort of a latch or a thumb screw, you have to undo three screws with a screwdriver. And if you don't tighten them back, the cover will be prone to coming off when you connect your vacuum cleaner to the port. As other reviewers have noted, there are two separate dust collection outlets. This complicates things a bit if you're putting together some sort of a permanent dust collection setup. But since I'm just connecting my vac when I need it, it's not a big deal for me. Edit: the sander has gotten increasingly loud after several months of intermittent use, to the point where you had to wear hearing protection just to turn it on. After some investigation, the culprit appear to be two low-quality 6202 bearings used for the smaller belt rollers. The bearings are very cheap to replace, although the middle roller is relatively difficult to disassemble. ... show more
