  • A Sleek Steel Vise-Highly Recommended
This time around I wanted a cast STEEL instead of a cast IRON vise and the RIDGID F-60 66997 seemed like a good choice. I just unpacked it and the higher strength of the steel allows for a very sleek outline. Think long distance runner instead of cast iron sumo wrestler. It's a pretty vise and the blue paint is to die for. Mine came in with the paint on one side of the jaws dinged up from where it smashed through the box. There's a cardboard divider inside the box designed to keep the vise centered but if the box is dropped on its side (like mine was) then the vise is likely to pick up damage. A heavy tool of this quality and price point deserves a double box! A digital scale shows it weights 55.8 lbs and Amazon lists shipping weight as 58.5 so the difference is the box. This is listed as a 6" vise but the jaws on mine are 6 1/4 inches wide x 1 1/8 inches vertically and the other dimensions are 18 3/8 long x 10 wide x 9 tall. The large anvil area is 4 inches x 4 5/8 and it opens to a nice and wide 8 5/8 inches. Mine lacks the "Made in Germany" imprint that used to be on the slide but there is a paper label on the box which says, "Made in Germany with components from Germany and Turkey." I emailed RIDGID (Nov 2015) asking where the main castings were made and received the following reply, "The main body is forged at the Peddinghaus facility in Germany." Great! The jaws are perfectly aligned and it operates smoothly. I haven't had any problems with the rubber bumpers falling off the handle (they're set in deeply machined grooves) but if this does become a problem I can think of easy fixes. It lacks replaceable jaws but since I almost always use jaw inserts this wasn't a deal killer. I went back and forth between this and a Wilton for a couple of weeks and feel like I made the right choice. Actually, it's kind of a privilege to own a vise of this caliber. Just ship it in a double box! ... show more

  • Really not sure of an appropriate rating..
I received the vice a few hours ago in a badly damaged box left by FedEx. The box was ripped in several places and wet. The package had been resealed in plastic and even that was ripped. So I took photos of the box and opened the package. The vice had all parts except the indicated allen key. It looks refurbished rather than new. Several abrasions on the paint that look like they are quite old. Severely stained with what looks like wood glue. There is rust in several places although not worse than may be expected from a package that remained wet and neglected for several months. I had a good look at the functional aspects and the vice appears sound. It looks like the handle is brand new. The jaws line up. Not sure what to do about this. Suggestions would be welcome. It weighs 50lbs plus. ... show more

  • Time for quality
Looking to replace my weak, worn out vise I turned to Amazon.com. I had a dollar range in mind. I focused on the vises within this price range. Basically, I was gonna get what I always got, something that was good enough. Then this one showed up, well above my price range. Hmmm, this'll be my third vise, add them together and this price is what I've spent over the years. Maybe for the price it'll be my last vise, and a better vise altogether. I ordered, it came to my door. I took it to the workshop, opened the box, yup, it's a vise. I mounted it to the bench and the first thing I noticed was the 4" longer handle, more leverage. Then I noticed when turning the handle there was almost no slop, the jaw responed immediatly. (nothing major, it just said quailty to me.) My old one when you grabbed the movable jaw would flop around, the new one, barely any flop at all. My old one, the jaws didn't line up much at all. The new one, jaws line up near perfect. The old one, if I clamped something to one side of the jaws and tightened, I could see the jaw flex under load. The new one, solid clamping no matter where the clamping force is. I know it's just a vise, but it speaks quality and long life. I spend much of my free time fabricating metal and this, although just a vise, is something I go to multiple times a day, might as well walk up to a quality vise and clamp with confidence, as this one is. • Handle must have been lost in shipping
the vise seems like it would work fine, but the handle didn't make it thru shipping, or was shipped without a handle?! The packaging was torn in several places, probably because the vise was thinly veiled in cardboard. So, its heavy and it looks well made.

  • Very nice and heavy duty
It is my first vise. I tend to believe that you get what you pay for so I spent way more than I probably should have for as little as I will use a vise. But I wanted to only make the purchase once and not have to worry about it again. This is a beast of a vise. Very nice and heavy duty. Looks great and works great so far. I do with the tabs coming off the base with the bolt holes to mount the vise were a little thicker. I haven't had an issuu and don't think I will. But they are a little thin considering how beefy everything else is on this vise. Don't feel it is enough to reduce stars on the review. That will change of course if I have issues with a tab breaking in the future. Until then, this is a great vise that my kids will probably inherit when I die. ... show more

  • Amazing vise with one small dumb and annoying detail
This is a great vise in every way but I have on complaint that develops into quite an annoyance every time I use it. If you're not careful and slow with the rotation of the rod the rubber stops at the end will fly off and then the whole rod will simply fall out. I've had this happen over 20 times already and nothing is more frustrating than chasing down or looking for some dumb rubber ring around your shop when you're in the middle of fabricating metal. How do you design such an amazing vise and screw up such a simple minor detail? ... show more

  • Great Product!!!! Very Stong
This Vise is awesome. Very strong. I work on old cars alot and have to beat on things that are very rusty. I have used a 3' cheater bar on the handle to press in wheel studs on an axle and this vise did it with ease. Jaws open to around 9" so its great for holding larger things. I have the 6" jaw version. No complaints. I didn't want to spend this much money up front on a vise but I'm glad I went with this one. I don't feel I will ever out grow this one! ... show more
