  • It's big, but for thick ropes, works great
Color: Gold
It's a pretty big 8, feels like it was designed for 11mm ropes if you use the traditional frictional method. You can get decent friction on a modern 9mm with a double wrap, and you get the ascender trick to work. It's a solid piece. I trust it. I think I will use it more for building canopy anchors or releasable systems than actual rappeling. Get the version with horns, there are a ton of advantages and not really any disadvantages. Just gives you the ability to do better, faster lock-offs, which are important with something like this where you can't tie a knot below it to go hands-free. ... show more

  • Adequate
Color: Black
Build quality: This will work fine, but there was some lack in the quality of the shaping. Instead of being smoothly rounded, there were some peaks and flatter spots. I don’t think they will be much issue, and there were no burrs, but I would think the bend angle may be mildly sharper in some configurations…at least until some wear smooths it out. ... show more

  • Extremely solid and versatile
Color: Black
Got this to add to my arborist climbing kit. The utility of this figure 8 is extensive, there are so many things it can do vs a normal descender or classic figure 8. It is very robust (a little heavy) but no doubt it is strong enough to take a fall as it is very solid. The shape allows for heavier loads and ability to create more friction or tie the load off on the “hooks” ... show more

  • Nice figure 8 descender!
Color: Black
I'm a volunteer search and rescue canine handler. It's a lot of fun, but as volunteers we supply our own gear. I'm always looking for new stuff to add to my kit. Years ago I was a SAR tech for a caving group, so we did a lot of rope climbing and descents, and I wanted to have this functionality back. I've been keeping an eye out for gear, so when I saw this figure 8 I had to try it. It arrived in a plastic bag and contained only the figure 8, which arrived in near-mint condition. This is a nice figure 8! It has the safety hooks on the side to lock your line, which is what I wanted. The material is lighter than I expected, probably improvements in metallurgy in the past 20 years. The size is just right for climbing-rated rope, so I'm stoked. I'm very pleased with this figure 8. I may not do a lot of climbing with it, but it's great when you need to lower something by rope. ... show more

  • No Certification. No Stamping. No Rating.
Color: Black
I got this for low risk situations, possible use if called upon during an emergency and for handling loads and moving around in trees/on roofs. I am an adult that can my my own decisions. I will use it but I do not like that it says 40KN when most others say 50. I do not like that there is not a certification for a piece of gear that is responsible for life and limb. There is no paperwork or certificate included and that makes me think that the 40KN is just pulled out of the air. Overall, it “looks” good but the metal and the process in which it was manufactured is what matters with gear like this. Personally, I would not trust this to take a shock load of very much and I will be very careful about how, when and where I use it. If anything substantial comes to light I will report back but for me this is just a tool to have on hand for an emergency or to create a mechanical advantage on a load I am handling. It did come with some surface defects in the metal and on the finish which also does not inspire a ton of confidence. It is what it is and it should be handled accordingly. ... show more

  • When the Only Mark Is a Logo...
Color: Gold
When I first picked this thing up, I was stoked. It’s a sleek little figure 8—lightweight, smooth to the touch, compact, and it just feels solid in the hand. Like something that wants to be clipped to your harness and go on adventures. But then I took a closer look and noticed something missing: any sort of marking other than the SOB logo. No stamped strength rating, no CE or UIAA cert, no load limit—just the mysterious branding from a company known for entry-level, budget-friendly gear. Now, to be fair, a lot of figure 8s—even from big-name brands—don’t have ratings or certifications stamped on them. But when it comes from a trusted brand with a solid reputation, I don’t think twice. With a name I don’t know well, and zero specs to back it up, it gives me pause. Like… how much am I saving, and what’s that worth when I’m mid-rappel? And yeah, let’s be real—I really hope SOB doesn’t end up standing for what I’d shout if this thing failed under load. Maybe it’s fine for casual use or as a backup, but I’ll probably reach for something with either a known name or at least a few reassuring stamps on it when the stakes are high. ... show more

  • Good quality and fit/finish
Color: Black
This is a very large rescue-8, bigger than most of the others I have used. That makes it really easy to use, and it seems to be high quality. The anodizing is really good, the polishing nice, etc. I will try this out over the summer and report back, I always rappel with a prusik backup so I am not hosed in the event of a failure. ... show more
