  • Drain battey if device locks up. It may avoid a return.
Bought the REMOVU shortly after seeing the need for a remote display for the Hero4. Friday 1/2/2015 I followed the "very simple" instructions and was able to get the unit functioning within a few minutes. I started looking through the menu on the REMOVU and at some point, the REMOVU locked up. It locked up hard and would not shut down. Even the little reset button in the hole near the USB port did not shut the unit down. I had to let it exhaust the battery to power down the unit. I then charged it from "dead", restarted it and was able to get into the pairing mode once again, but this time the unit froze again upon selecting the gopro network. I have an email into REMOVU, but being Friday I don't expect a reply. The unit is currently dying a slow death by battery drain. I will try to get it to power up and sync once again while waiting for an email reply from REMOVU. This has been very frustrating. It seems the customer is once again beta testing a product that should have been "rung out" before its release. REMOVU not having a phone number is equally frustrating. When attempting to register my new device their web site also locked up and wouldn't let me add my contact information. I should have known better and checked for a customer support number before purchasing this item. We never stop learning. Saturday 1/3/2015 This morning, found the device dead on my desk as expected. It must shut itself down after a certain period of time or a certain drop in battery voltage. It was frozen in the startup screen position when abandoning it last evening. There was just enough battery left to boot the device and this time I was successful in pairing the device with my waiting gopro Hero4. I put it on the charger so I could test the functions. It will work when plugged into a PC. I checked all functions and found everything to be working. The device "power off" properly and is now charging to full capacity. I will test once again with a full charge from a completely powered off condition and report if the success is repeatable. Raised from 1 Star to 3 Stars, could go higher if REMOVU contacts me... Monday 1/5/2015 REMOVU has gotten back to me twice and the last contact stated that they are working on a firmware update that should eliminate the problem I encountered. The firmware is supposed to be released in a couple weeks. I believe may problems were related to functions that took place while I was exploring the REMOVU settings for wi/fi and camera network after I had successfully paired it to my camera. If you experience a lockup with your device and it won't budge or shut down, let the battery drain and try to reboot after the screen has gone blank. In the mean time I am staying clear of the menu section that locked up my device until I install the firmware upgrade. There is little cause to make changes in the wi/fi network name or password after it has been entered unless you want to pair to a second or different gopro camera. They have offered to replace my device, but it is functioning properly at this time and if a firmware update fixes the possibility of it locking up again I will be fine keeping my current device. I have raised my rating to 4 stars. If they could cut the lag time it would be a 5 star rating. Monday 2/9/2015 I have lowered my star rating back down to three stars. Below is as exact copy of my support ticket submitted to REMOVU this evening: I appreciate the new firmware 1.4, I updated my R1 as soon as it became available. It took a couple tries but I "think" I got a successful update completed. Unfortunately I updated the firmware in my Gopro Hero 4 before receiving your cautionary email about the conflict. My Hero 4 was functioning strangely after numerous attempted pairings before receiving your cautionary email. As a result, my REMOVU is totally inoperable at this time. Is there any chance the attempted pairings affected the stand alone functionality of my brand new Hero 4? This is an unfortunate situation. I need the remote viewing/control capability for an upcoming trip. Do you have any idea when the compatible firmware update will be available? I realize that Gopro probably doesn't notify you when they do their own upgrades, but this is a real public relations nightmare for REMOVU. Please tell me my camera has not been damaged and give your patient customers a time frame for the "emergency" firmware update! Monday 3/2/2015 If I do not receive a reply within a reasonable amount of time I will be returning my REMOVU R1 to Amazon. I have struggled with this device from the day it arrived. I'm tech savoy and have done everything in my bag of tricks to get this device working properly. Numerous times I have had to let the battery drain to achieve a hard reset on the device. This has allowed me to get it update with the latest firmware. At this point I have gotten the device to turn on and sync with my Gopro Hero 4 Black, but as soon as I get into the field, the REMOVU will habitually lock up and will not respond to any commands. One again I have had to let the battery drain to achieve a hard reset and start over. I'm a hiker and photographer / videographer, I have no desire to R&D this device for REMOVU nor do I have the time to continuously jump through hoops to get it working. I need a device that works when I turn it on in the field when I need it. This has been the most frustrating experience I have had with a device that had so much potential. Sunday 3/6/2015 Received a pre-tested device from the seller. Mine my have had specific problems not related the bulk of the units being sold. So far so go, but I would like to see a firmware upgrade that takes full advantage of all the Hero 4 capabilities. I like the REMOVU so I'm back to 4 stars. ... show more

  • A good monitor option in the field...
I've actually done a detailed shootout of this that's up on YouTube (just go there and search for GoPro R1 shootout), where I compare it against the Lilliput 7" monitor and an iPad Mini... For the price, it's hard to beat, but it does have some issues to consider. Battery-wise it will run for about 2.5 hours, so a fair bit more than the GoPro will, which is nice - but keep in mind since it is WiFi, it will be draining the GoPro's battery at a higher rate. It works fine with the Hero 3, Hero 3+ and Hero 4 (make sure to use the latest version of the software) - but I did have pretty consistent connection issues - sometimes it connected, sometimes it didn't. The wrist strap is nice and large, and will easily fit over a winter jacket, so good out on the ski slopes. It's not waterproof, but looks to be reasonably water resistant - and WiFi doesn't work underwater anyway, so who cares. If you have more than one GoPro, it's a nightmare, because it doesn't seem to remember the network name/password - HUGE fail on and I deduct a star for that. It should be something they can solve in a future update, but right now it doesn't do it. The delay is substantially more than the iPad Mini - on the Hero 4 the Mini came it at about 0.5s, where the R1 came in at about 1.8s. They say they're working on improving this, and I imagine they'll be able to, but right now it's pretty laggy. That being said, any delay beyond a few frames makes it worthless for tracking motion - so even with the IOS app it's more for framing shots than anything else, so not really that big a deal. Customer support (for me) was non existent, I tried emailing twice but they never responded. All in all, for the price I think it's pretty hard to beat - only a bit more expensive than the LCD backpage and infinitely more useful - in many situations I can't even use the backpack because the camera is positioned in such a way you can't easily see it, and this is where the R1 really shines. It's also super convenient to have it on your wrist so your hands are free - so even though I give it 3 stars, with some software updates it will easily be a 5 star. UPDATE 02/18/15: I'm updating my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars for a couple reasons; first and foremost the latest software update addresses my two main areas of concern, the first being that it now remembers multiple camera SSID settings and the second that the live-view performance has been brought close to on-par with the GoPro app. The update process is very straight forward, basically just unzip the files and plug in the R1 and it looks like a removable drive, copy the files over and reboot it - the whole process takes under two minutes. On the support side of things, after my original post I was contacted by the US distributor and they were very responsive, so if you have any issues I would contact them first (sales@texastr.com). At the time they told me that they were aware of the issue and were working on it, and true to their word, the update is here and does everything they said - Excellent support (from the US distributor). ... show more
