Description

The wrist-worn REMOVU R1 Live View Remote for GoPro HERO3 / HERO3+ / HERO4 allows you to operate the camera and view a live image through its 2″ LCD display. It allows you to operate any of the camera's setting, including record start and stop. In addition, image overlays show important data like renaming battery life and Wi-Fi signal status. The remote is powered by a lithium polymer battery estimated to last up to three hours, which recharges via USB. Complimenting the take-anywhere nature of the GoPro, the R1 is water- and impact-resistant. In addition to recording, the R1 will also play back footage already recorded.

  • A good monitor option in the field...
I've actually done a detailed shootout of this that's up on YouTube (just go there and search for GoPro R1 shootout), where I compare it against the Lilliput 7" monitor and an iPad Mini... For the price, it's hard to beat, but it does have some issues to consider. Battery-wise it will run for about 2.5 hours, so a fair bit more than the GoPro will, which is nice - but keep in mind since it is WiFi, it will be draining the GoPro's battery at a higher rate. It works fine with the Hero 3, Hero 3+ and Hero 4 (make sure to use the latest version of the software) - but I did have pretty consistent connection issues - sometimes it connected, sometimes it didn't. The wrist strap is nice and large, and will easily fit over a winter jacket, so good out on the ski slopes. It's not waterproof, but looks to be reasonably water resistant - and WiFi doesn't work underwater anyway, so who cares. If you have more than one GoPro, it's a nightmare, because it doesn't seem to remember the network name/password - HUGE fail on and I deduct a star for that. It should be something they can solve in a future update, but right now it doesn't do it. The delay is substantially more than the iPad Mini - on the Hero 4 the Mini came it at about 0.5s, where the R1 came in at about 1.8s. They say they're working on improving this, and I imagine they'll be able to, but right now it's pretty laggy. That being said, any delay beyond a few frames makes it worthless for tracking motion - so even with the IOS app it's more for framing shots than anything else, so not really that big a deal. Customer support (for me) was non existent, I tried emailing twice but they never responded. All in all, for the price I think it's pretty hard to beat - only a bit more expensive than the LCD backpage and infinitely more useful - in many situations I can't even use the backpack because the camera is positioned in such a way you can't easily see it, and this is where the R1 really shines. It's also super convenient to have it on your wrist so your hands are free - so even though I give it 3 stars, with some software updates it will easily be a 5 star. UPDATE 02/18/15: I'm updating my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars for a couple reasons; first and foremost the latest software update addresses my two main areas of concern, the first being that it now remembers multiple camera SSID settings and the second that the live-view performance has been brought close to on-par with the GoPro app. The update process is very straight forward, basically just unzip the files and plug in the R1 and it looks like a removable drive, copy the files over and reboot it - the whole process takes under two minutes. On the support side of things, after my original post I was contacted by the US distributor and they were very responsive, so if you have any issues I would contact them first ([email protected]). At the time they told me that they were aware of the issue and were working on it, and true to their word, the update is here and does everything they said - Excellent support (from the US distributor). ... show more

  • Does more than the GoPro Remote. Better bang for your buck, but read review carefully before purchasing.
It works okay, not perfect but. Here are my Pros v. Cons after using it for a few weeks. PROS: - Great to have when you want to set the camera down or put it on a mount where there are tight/small spaces. Unlike the built in LCD or the backpack, you have to be behind the camera at all times. With this, you can walk freely and know you got the correct shot. It's very helpful if you want to mount the camera and you're alone. This is so that you don't need another person to tell you if they got the shot or not. You already know. - Light, small, and compact. Fits in any backpack or carrying case. -It shows you the battery on both the goPro and the unit itself. It doesn't tell you how much time or percentage. Just a gauge. It's better than nothing. - Comes pre charged so you can use it right out of the box. - It has a live feed before and during recording. CONS: - Extremely short batter life. Only about 20 minutes before it shows a red/low level. So you must charge it frequently. - Took forever to put the wrist band on. It can be very confusing on how to put it on and frustrating. Small gaps on the back side is how you get the velcro wrist band through. Because it it velcro, it has friction and this makes it take longer to make it into a wearable piece. - It lags 4 seconds late just like the GoPro app. This is not an issue with the unit, it's an issue with the GoPro. - Sometimes the live feed pauses by itself and can be jumpy, and produce a none freely moving video. It jumps like it is taking a time lapse for .5 seconds, but it's actually taking a video. Although when you go back to download it off of the GoPro it comes in as a video. - Not waterproof at all. It is only spray proof such as a light rain. - Once the GoPro goes under water, the signal is lost, even if the remote is a foot away. - Range is terrible. Only about 40 feet at best. The further you move away from the GoPro, the longer the screen lags/glitches before getting a warning that signal is bad. ... show more
