  • Very easy to learn to use, easy to use, very high quality, but some reservations.
Not my first experience trying to use a trail cam, but it is the one that I will use. Previous attempt to use a trail cam was one where the instructions were so bad that we never really knew what it was going to do. The Reconyx, however, was so easy and straightforward that I was testing it out in only a few minutes. So many defaults are built into the system that you don't have to go through a complex ordeal setting it up. Once I learned the ropes, I could then pick and choose what I wanted to change among the settings. I bought the Reconyx after seeing it used in a nature documentary, figuring that the researchers must have known a good thing. I and they were right. Excellent picture quality. A few reservations: Motion sensor is sensitive up to 80 ft. Then you realize that 80 ft. is not that far. Also, small objects at distance apparently do not trigger the motion sensor. Also, I was monitoring nests in treetops. With sky as background, it silhouettes the objects. Also, I wish I could zoom the object (a nest) during use, not simply when viewing the images afterward. It could minimize silhouetting and perhaps a motion sensor could work on a small subject at distance. It is also difficult to aim the camera during setup, especially when 3D has to be taken into account (e.g., and elevated subject). ... show more

  • Best on the Market
This is my second of the Gen 2 I also own a Reconyx that just takes stills. While the still camera is very fast, fastest on the market with the best images, this camera takes video, plus 2 stills. Or you can set it for just still or just video. The quality is excellent but the video is not quite as fast, which is normal. I've had about 4 Bushnells, and yes they are cheaper with good still and video quality, but they always break (sensor, or night photos, or no video, etc) after a year or so. In the 5 years that I've owned Reconyx, I've never had a problem with anything. Also, they are American made so you can rest assured you are getting great support right her in the U.S.A. Can't recommend them enough. This new Gen2 model has a setting I wasn't used to, which instead of having the video set for the 30 seconds (which I set it for) the default goes to movement only. Because of the slower video speed, the video was catching the tail end of animals, usually for only seconds. The new default needs to be changed manually. Also, I had a problem with a 'clicking sound' on the audio. Reconyx was great. I sent the camera back under warranty and they replaced it. ... show more

  • Still learning the camera but now know it's designed to work with PC's and Not Apple Computers
I purchased this camera after reading several reviews, the data about perspective cameras and talking to staff at Reconyx. This is a very expensive tool for trying to learn what animals are eating products from my orchard and crawling under out-buildings, but I had tried several other cameras that had long trigger times (Bushnell Trophy Hunter) and hoped to purchase a camera that would capture skunks, racoons, foxes and possums as they entered my garden and climbed trees. I've only used the camera for a few days and so far the photography portion seems ok. I am however annoyed that reading the Reconyx website I was not told I would need to purchase a SD reader and that no video output cord was included. Small details but on a >$600 device, I assumed, as for the relatively cheap, Trophy Hunter, such would be included, or at least mentioned as an extra cost Accessory on the company website. If one wants to use this camera to it's full potential it appears this is a PC only camera, and I only use Macs. ... show more

  • Not reliable and not for pro use
Let me start by saying that the quality of the video and stills are quite good. Pretty much the best I have seen in a trail camera. However, there are several reasons why I returned not 1, but 2 of these cameras. The first one had what I can only assume was a bad sensor. Strange artifacting and pink stuck pixels in both stills and video modes. So back that one went. The second one produced sharp and clear video and pics, but in video mode it would stop and start recording in the middle of a clip causing the subject to leap around the frame. When I check the counter it would show it jump several seconds and it was completely random when it would happen, but it happened in every clip I tested. A product this unreliable is not something I can use especially when it will be left unattended for weeks or months and expected to work without problems. Another big complaint I have is the inability to turn off the timestamp and Reconyx logo that gets overlaid on the images and video. For a model that costs this much that feature should be mandatory. I had high hopes for this camera to replace all of my current ones, but I was very disappointed. ... show more

  • Best one out there.....
The function is excellent and their software is very intuitive. A perfect combination. I have tried several of these cameras and this one should be your choice for what is currently available.

  • Good overall quality; irritating Reconyx self advertisement banner on images
On the basis of image and video quality I would rate it 4 stars, however, the Reconyx name banner in the lower right hand corner cannot be turned off and must be removed in post processing if you want to. That is very inconvenient in video and reduces the overall video size. I've had many Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and GoPro digital cameras which take video. NONE of them put a logo on the image! Come on Reconyx, this is really irritating! I have also found that the battery life indicator is very inconsistent. A new set of 12 lithiums registered at 3/4 charge. This dropped down to "red" (less than 20%?) after 1 video. A replacement camera did the same thing so I assume this may be a problem with the way the camera reads the battery charge status. ... show more
