  • High Quality and Very Effective
Great system! My first impression upon opening the box was how solid and heavy duty all the components were made. As mentioned in earlier posts, the enclosed directions leave a lot to the imagination. I am mechanically inclined, so I was able to install this system in as close to a factory installation as possible (all wires hidden, routed safely from moving parts, low stress on the mounting points, etc.). Choose the pigtail mounting location first, as all wires need to be routed through those holes (forward from the tow vehicle rear point and backwards from the trailer front point). I used a 1" step drill bit for the frame mounting points. When chosing a camera mounting location, it's best to have a spot where you can safely drill two 3/16" holes completey through the wall, in a spot where you have access both inside and outside, and fasten with two 2 1/2" #10 bolts with washers, rather than using exterior screws only. The soft, thin outer laminated plywood on typical RVs won't hold the weight of this quality camera for long before it would come loose. For a safe water intrusion measure, I put some silicon sealant around the holes under the camera bracket, too. At the vehicle, I tapped an unused 12v terminal in the fuse box and ran a new wire to the hook up harness, rather than risking overloading another circuit by tapping an existing wire. The system thus has power all the time, but we unplug the monitor (all power runs through the monitor harness and back to the camera) when we're not towing, thus no battery drain). Functionally, this camera and monitor system is awesome! Crystal clear, no signal interference (as found on most wireless systems). We purchased a couple of those (relatively) new heavy duty 18" rubber twist ties from HD and fabricated a couple of upper and lower hooks that wrap behind our tow vehicle's existing rear view mirror, to mount the monitor. When towing, the rear view mirror is useless anyway, and that's where you naturally look to see what's behind you. By using the blue leads (camera 3 and trigger wire), the monitor view automatically comes up mirror image, meaning what the camera sees on the driver's shows up on the monitor on the driver's side.... We are now driving stress free, always knowing what's behind us. I wish I had bought this system years ago... ... show more

  • High quality, solidly built
Received this item very quickly and very impressed with the quality of the components. The camera is very solid with some weight to it owing, I guess, to the commercial nature of the piece. There was plenty of cable to go from the top rear of our fifth wheel to the cab of the truck. The fifth wheel is about 38 feet long and 13 feet high. This kit included the fifth wheel cable connector. The cable ends had a screw-type connection which makes for a very solid, reliable connection on each end. Reluctantly I did drill two holes in the top back edge of the fiberglass body of the fifth wheel but they can not be seen from the ground. To avoid making other holes I ran the cable down the back of the vertical ladder tube and fastened with cable ties then directly under the back bumper and along the beam that runs the full length of the fifth wheel. There was even enough cable to route it in this manner with about 8 feet to spare. The directions were a bit spartan but were clear enough to run the cable. This is a single camera setup and the instructions did not mention that in order to get the distance grid feature it must be connected to the "video 3" wire. However, a quick call to RVS support gave all the info I needed. They are very thorough and helpful in answering my questions and following up to be sure I was successful with the installation. Very impressed with the support provided. To gain entry to the truck cab I drilled a 3/4 inch hole in the floor under the threshold beneath the snap-off plastic piece in the left door of the crew cab area. Once the cable was strung I installed a grommet in the opening and filled the rest of the hole with silicone caulk. I'm very happy with the quality of the image on the 7 inch screen and can easily see the entire area behind the fifth wheel. This screen is as bit big to have on my dash along with a gps but I was able to locate it where it doesn't obstruct my view. Overall, I would highly recommend this rear view camera setup. ... show more

  • Some problems
The shipping was very fast. The quality looks good so far. However... 1) The manual needs help. Fortunately it is not a complex hookup so with some experimenting and common sense and what info you can get from the manual, it should be doable. 2) The connectors between vehicles appear to be stout and weatherproof (if anything it is overkill), however I was disappointed that the camera connector to the main long cable is clearly for the interior. This is not good if you are planning the entire run outside the RV (I don't like drilling holes in it and tearing up the interior to run a cable). So, I will have to rig a weatherproof cover of some sort for that connection, probably a piece of pvc pipe. 3) I first hooked everything together and connected it to a car battery to see it working before I started the installation. The monitor never did power on. The fuse in the power line was still good. So, I need to get this replaced. I will update my rating when I have gotten this sorted out. (Edit) I contacted the company and they promptly sent out a replacement monitor which worked. They were a pleasure to deal with, so I have upgraded to 4 stars. I have not installed it yet. (Edit) After thinking about it and finding no exterior solution I did drill a hole and ran the cable down to the bottom, then back outside again and toward the front. It worked better than I thought it would and the grommet worked perfectly so it is a professional-looking installation. The trick is to find the bottom edge of the cross member and drill the grommet hole just below that, while mounting the camera just above that, onto the crossmember; this keeps the outside cable very short and neat. To do that you must cut an access hole on the interior where your cable will run down, approximately where the cable will run through the grommet (mine went into a chase) and then drill from the inside out with a pilot hole to get the perfect hole location for the larger grommet hole. Finally make a plate to cover the interior access hole. Don't forget a drip loop in the outside cable. ... show more

  • Excellent set up for travel trailer
I'm very happy with the rear view camera equipment in this package. The camera, brackets, monitor and the quick connect hardware all appear to be of very good quality and the camera image in the monitor is excellent. I especially like the quick connect system, which makes it extremely easy to connect when hooking up the trailer. We recently took an 800 mile trip from south florida up into the Smoky Mountains and traveling with this set up made a huge difference. With the camera continuously on I was always able to glance at the monitor (like a rearview mirror) to see who was behind me when I was changing lanes or backing up. And the image in the monitor is excellent, both day and night. It was actually better at night as the daytime sunshine coming through the windshield would sometimes make the image in the monitor a bit washed out but still good enough to see behind. The only real negative about this package is the installation directions - they're kind of short on specifics. But if you have some experience in wiring accessories like a brake controller or a radio, then you'll be able to handle this project. If you have a travel trailer this would be an terrific investment. It's an excellent product that's reasonably priced, restores confidence and reduces stress while pulling a travel trailer. ... show more

  • Great camera system
I purchased this system to instal on the back of my 32 foot 5th wheel as a rearview mirror set up. It is time consuming to install properly and run all of the cables and wiring, but that would be the case with any wired camera setup. I had previously used one of the Peak brand wireless camera setups and it worked great for about 1 1/2 years, but then after winter storage this last year it began acting up. (You get what you pay for). We sold the motorhome and purchased this 5th wheel and I began looking for a different setup. I also flat tow a lifted Jeep Cherokee behind us into the mountains, so having a camera was a must. This camera works great. At night it gives plent of light to be able to see my jeep in tow, and during the day has great color. What makes it really awesome is that it has sound built into it as well, so I can be backing the trailer into our shop or our camping spot my wife can tell me when to stop or which way the trailer needs to turn. The only thing that would make it better is if the sound went both ways and I was able to talk back to her. I am very pleased with this camera system. There are some cheaper, but I don't think they are near the same quality! ... show more

  • Not That Hard To Install Not That Hard To Install
After reading poor reviews on wireless cameras on all aluminum trailers I went with this one. I plan on getting a new truck soon so I wanted to make the install simple to move to a new truck. I mounted the monitor to a sheet of plastic and wedged it between the seat and arm rest. I added a cigarette lighter plug for power off the outlet in the back of the center console. I utilized and existing bolt on the bottom of the bumper by adding a bigger hole to the mounting bracket. I ran the cable along the bottom of the truck and came into the cab through a plastic drain plug in the floor pan. Then I ran the cable under the carpet and came out at a slit for the seatbelt then to the console. The trailer portion was pretty straight forward. I mounted the camera pointing down the road and plan on having it on full time. Have the camera pointing this far back dose skew the distance scale on the monitor. I adjusted the monitor scale the best I could. The truck in the picture is exactly 2 feet further back then it reads but I can live with that (the monitor still has the plastic on it in this picture). My installation took about 3 hours. Have not tested the night vision or microphone features yet. I will update once I do. All and all very pleased with the quality of this unit, cables and hardware. ... show more

  • Good quality, good price, a nightmare to install - consider going wireless.
The quality of the gear is very nice, it's a bit overpriced though. I put this on the back of a 2013 travel trailer (31 footer) and routed the cables down the coping of the edge and used silicon to seal it into place. Then I routed the cable under the coach zip tying as I crawled along under it. Once I got to the tongue of the trailer I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to drill the heavy steal and the provided screws would not have worked anyway so I just let it dangle with the trailer brake / light hookup cable. For connecting it to my 2014 Tundra - I gave up pretty quick. I took the trailer out on a camping trip and just routed the wire to the hookup of the trailer through my back window (it rolls down) then just connected the right wires to the voltage of a 12 volt outlet in the truck and whole - I had video. Overall the equipment is good quality, but installation is a night of a nightmare and it's darn near impossible to hide all of the wires. If I was doing it over again, I'd get the wireless one hands down. It's more money - but it would get used more. ... show more
