  • The Best Pool Heater
Having worked in the swimming pool business for over 13 years I can say this is the best heater you can buy. I've worked on many heaters including ones made by Teledyne Laars, Pentair, Sta-rite, Jandy, and Hayward. These are the reasons why I recommend this heater in my business: it has a simplistic, easy-to-work-on design with less wiring and moving parts. This is important because mice and insects destroy all of the heaters I mentioned at a faster rate. Raypak actually seals the computer board in a compartment that is almost impregnable. When something does go wrong the diagnosis is much simpler because there are fewer wires and parts. Frankly just about every other heater I work on is a complete nightmare in the wiring department. Over the years Raypak is the only company I've seen make meaningful changes to their product namely, protecting the delicate computer board and decreasing the size of the power supply. Furthermore, this is one of the only brands I've never seen catch on fire, because it is vented properly. Older Purex and Hayward heaters were notorious for burning up but luckily the wires would melt and shut the heater down so it never became an inferno. Newer Hayward and Sta-Rite heaters use a power vent, which is a cool idea although unnecessary for outdoor use. However these fans crap out all the time as mice seem to love them more than computer boards. It's just an unnecessary part unless you're setting your heater up indoors and if you do, Raypak sells a more robust vent separately. By far this is the easiest heater to install and integrate with the Comp Pool and Aqualink computer management systems. I also feel the need to address some of the negative reviews for this product, namely that you are buying this product on-line at wholesale price. You assume the risk for it's installation. When I buy it from my supplier there is a mark-up and a warranty that extends to professional people who install these things professionally. If you don't check your pH in four years and you heat exchanger disintegrates Raypak shouldn't have to replace it because you're an idiot. The extra money you pay for a professional installation is the peace of mind you get from knowing the job was done right. ... show more

  • One Star
The two negative reviews for Raypak are totally accurate. If you are thinking of purchasing a Raypak heater online then first read their huge disclaimer on their own website. THEY DO NOT SUPPORT PRODUCTS PURCHASED ONLINE! Not sure what the difference is. I replaced a 30+ year old Raypak millivolt pool heater in 2010 with the exact same model. I figured why mess with success right? Well 50 months later this thing is leaking like a sieve where the tubing bundle is coming apart. Sure it can be replaced... for $600 and that is just the part! Tried to contact Raypak but they don't respond and they do not list their telephone number. Considering I spent almost $1600 for this junk heater the average cost to own one of these is just over $1 per day! Not a good value by any stretch of the imagination. My recommendation is to stay far away from these products... very far away! ... show more

  • I installed a Raypak pool heater and was unable to ...
I installed a Raypak pool heater and was unable to have it ignite. I am an engineer and am able to understand the wiring diagram and troubleshooting diagram. No luck. I called Raypak and they didn't even want to hear my question, and abruptly stated that if the heater was not installed by a Raypak certified technician, they had no comment, would offer no assistance, and would not warranty the product. I did call a technician and the problem was wire with insulation that was cut but the sheet metal during assembly. Question 1 - if you are a technician, why would you buy this through Amazon, so you probably are not a tech. Question 2 - If you are not a tech, why would you buy a product with zero tech support and warranty? ... show more

  • After nearly 20yrs service from old Raypak, replaced with new, and love it!
After reading the other review that was so negative I had to write my own so that everyone has another view of this great heater. First of all, in regard to the very negative review concerning service, I do not have an opinion on how good or bad Raypak service is because I've never had to call them! It does say in the manual that you have to keep your water levels balanced or damage may occur. I would like to imagine your water levels would have to be VERY bad to actually affect this unit, such as very high acidity/low ph. If it leaks, then likely a header gasket is bad or main/return connections are bad, OR, a faulty install all together and it overheated resulting in a cracked heat exchanger, OR bad freeze protection circuit (which is not the responsibility of Raypak, it is a unit that kicks on the water pump for those that don't know) and the heatexchanger cracked from being frozen with water in it. Just my two cents. As far as I'm concerned Raypak makes a really great pool heater. I just replaced a nearly 20yr old Raypak with a new Raypak 406k and absolutely love it! It is still one of the easiest to hook into a compool or aqualink control system, digital interface with precise target temp control (unlike a millivolt unit that is hard to dial in your temp with any accuracy). My father replaced his Raypak about a year before I did and his was about 17yrs old. His unit stays in direct sunlight while mine is always under shade, not sure if that is why I got extra years or not. I talked my brother in-law into replacing his 4yr old extremely troublesome and expensive Teledyne Laars with a Raypak, going on 8yrs now and not a single problem. I would give this product 10 stars if I could to offset the very unfair 1 star that the other guy left over a service dispute that was likely his fault to begine with, or perhaps a bad apple, either way Raypak is worth more than 1 star in my opinion. ... show more
