  • Fun handheld
Style: Purple Transparent-64
I’m not a gamer by any stretch, but I’ve always enjoyed playing a game or two on my phone, Candy Crush anyone? Haha… When I saw this “R46S” Handheld, I thought it looked fun and was excited to give it a try. I chose the Purple Transparent-64 colorway and now seeing it in person, I wish I’d have gone with the White-64 instead, for better view of the buttons and labels – though with continued use I know I’ll quickly come to memorize them anyway. The device is lightweight and like your typical handheld…a bit of vintage, old school gaming gear. There are literally a TON of games on this device. It’s easy to operate with the controls, and the graphics look surprisingly good, and the sound is also good, definitely better than what I anticipated! The battery seems to be fine; I haven’t played continuously long enough to experience the battery fully draining, so that’s good, seems it’ll last as long as I need for the typical duration of my playtime. If you’re into the retro handheld vibe, this may be right up your alley! ... show more

  • Lots of vintage video games in a physically nice gamepad, but weak battery & difficult to navigate
Style: White-64
Android-based computer with decent size screen and joystick/button controls. Manual isn't very clear/useful so took a little bit to figure out how to navigate the menu and how to charge it (manual seems to say you plug charging cable into the right-side microUSB, but it seems to only charge, albeit slowly, when you plug into the left-side microUSB port. Battery lasts about an hour before needing to recharge. If you feel nostalgic for the video games you grew up with, then this may be for you. There are MANY games grouped by their MANY vintage video game consoles. However, it takes a LONG time to charge and it drains quickly (perhaps the non-removeable, rechargable battery is too worn). So one star off for the non-intuitive menu and one star off for the weak battery charging & life. ... show more

  • Different Choice for retro games, LOVE IT
Style: Purple Transparent-64
Hard for me to write everything in one review, because I've gotten a half dozen of these to compare and contrast, and I learn something new with each one. But here's where I am now: The Anbernic are almost all the same, with some differences. Interface, games available, all small differences. What I really like about this one is 1) as soon as this one turns on, there is a blue light that lets you know it's on even before the first splash screen opens up, unlike Anbernic consoles where I have to wait 5-10 seconds to see if I actually turned it on or not 2) a different spread of games. Now, a good Anbernic has ALL the games I like: a full spread of arcade games, including Joust, Karate Champ, Gauntlet, Rampart, and multiple options of Prince of Persia. This one lacks ALL of those. it only has 47 games in the MAME section, which is general arcade games. But it also has the 3 CAPCOM dedicated emulators with about 30 games, mostly fighting. And it has Final Burn Neo, with more than 2220 games, and these are all the Neo Geo arcade games, as best as I can tell. So lots of options there. But it also has a good set of PICO games, which are surprisingly fun, and 1832 curated Amiga games. If you ever tried to build a retro system with RetroPie or Batocera, the Amiga/Commodore games are often a mess, with multiple discs that you can't load. These all work, so that's 1832 games for me to explore and find new games to enjoy. The negatives: 1) no Nintendo games, including zero Game Boy games. 2) the processor doesn't seem QUITE able to handle the Atomiswave games. They took forever to load or respond. Maybe I could have played one if I'd been more patient, but waiting more than 2 minutes for a game to load up and be ready seems excessive. But I love the big screen, with clear display. The controls are intuitive, comfortable and seem durable, and it is comfortable in my hands. This is going to be one of my favorites! I might not be as happy with it if it were my ONLY console...I think Anbernic is still overall a little better. But as I find games I like on this, I might end up playing it even more. Very few games ported in from Japan that are unplayable due to untranslated text, too, which is nice. RECOMMENDED ... show more

  • + ½*: A Worthy Handheld Game Console
Style: Purple Transparent-64
There is a lot to like about this game console. The display is nice and big and the processor has plenty of power for smooth gameplay. The included game card has all of my favorite MAME games although they were mostly in a different subdirectory than expected. The console size is comfortable and the controls are well placed. I think the feel is not as good as other handheld consoles, but it is still very playable. In particular, the buttons feel a little mushier and the tactile feedback not as good. The construction is also not as solid as some others, it seems to be using thinner plastic. The battery seems to drain quickly, but I have not been shutting down the system after playing, just pressing the power button. It does start up quickly, so it might not be in sleep mode. The system is highly configurable and that is definitely helpful. My main issue was the default decoration masked important information in many of the games I played. Configuring it to None made them significantly more playable. It also helped me fully appreciate the screen! The sound is also quite good. ... show more
