I didn't have super high expectations for this unit since there are about 30 companies advertising almost the identical unit loaded with similar ROMs. I chose the R36MAX for it's larger 4" screen compared to the other competitor's 3.5 inch screen. The hardware looks nice, but is VERY cheap and plastic when in hand. My unit actually rattles if you shake it slightly. I don't know if that's loose buttons or something came free inside. The system booted up just fine, but is complicated to operate. There is a built in user manual, which is nice, but a LOT of button combos to memorize in order to do anything. Used regularly this may be OK, but this isn't something to play for a bit, put away for a while and immediately are productive when you pick it up again. Just getting the games to start was a challenge as it's not obvious what buttons to push. The big problem I had was playability. I tried 10 random games to see how the system worked. 3 would load then crash once started. 2 wouldn't load at all. 2 loaded but were sideways on the screen (couldn't figure out how to undo that), and 3 worked just fine. A 30% success rate isn't going to work for me. If you google the system, there are instructions on how to wipe it, install a more stable OS, and suggestions to redownload all the games. No thanks. I don't want to put that much time into it. The unit isn't worth the headache.

I was on the fence before buying this because of few reviewers who gave it such a low score — which honestly is a shame on their part. This piece of tech is amazing, and the build quality feels very solid. I’ve owned and currently own many top-tier handhelds, including the Legion Go 2 (paid over $1K for it), both the OLED and non-OLED Steam Decks, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, along with several gaming consoles. So I can confidently say you really can’t go wrong with this device. Obviously, if you want a much bigger screen, this may not be for you. But for the price — especially considering you get a ton of games included — it almost feels like you’re getting it for free. What I really love is that I can carry this tiny device around instead of bringing my Legion Go or Steam Deck when I’m just in the mood for retro gaming. One thing: don’t get discouraged if some games initially load with the wrong aspect ratio or screen orientation. By launching RetroArch (Select + X button), you can easily reconfigure everything you need in the video settings. Absolutely love it!

I bought this handheld game console for my brother for his birthday, but I was unable to contain my excitement because I also like old school gaming. I turned the thing on and there are tons of games on here. For example, NES games included 500 plus games, the SNES had over 1200 games, the N64 had over 100.... There are even PlayStation games, one in particular caught my eye was Grand Theft Auto Vice City stories. I played the console for a while before repacking it to be wrapped for my brother. I am certainly going to be buying myself one. There are over 18,000 different games and this is totally worth buying. The picture supports 720P, offering great visuals, and perfect screen brightness as well. While I was using the console I did not come across any lag...yet as some of the negative reviews that I have read claimed, but I only tested four different games on the console I bought for my brother. I do not understand why there were some negative reviews about this item, but I certainly have no complaints. Thanks!

I bought 3 of these a gift for a 4, 6, and 7 year old. They are addicted to screens (cell phones) and scrolling brain rot tik toks and YouTube shorts to the point they will cry for hours if they don't get their screen time. Their mother was at a loss for what to do so I suggested this as an alternative. This has worked so well honestly - the kids love having them as a reward for good behavior and there's no tears when it's time to save the game and shut it down. They've completely forgotten about borrowing Mom's phone and fighting over it because they can all 3 have their own console here and now there's no more worrying about what they might find on the internet. My only semi regret was just buying the first console of this type I saw on Amazon. After a couple of days I realized this is just a clone of the actual r36s which has much more support online from a bigger community so it's likely I will never update these for the kids later. Overall though I'm satisfied - I'm not their parent so I can't influence them much but it's pretty clear to me this helped a lot by reducing their screen time and 100% stopping them from watching brain rot content.

First of all, this is a fine machine for games up to GBA, but anything beyond that is hit or miss. The most glaring issue is that everything above the PS1 has conflicting software issues. Take the N64 for example, a graphics codec is missing from the included SD card. So even though it includes them, they are glitchy to the point that playing them is impossible, textures simply don't appear due to the absence of this crucial file. The DS games have an overlay that cuts off text and overall just don't work well on a screen this size. Moving onto games. There are plenty, you definitely won't get bored. But a lot of homebrew stuff I've tried to launch simply don't work, and they go heavy on region specific titles to pump up the number of games on the cart. You'll find sometimes 12 versions or more of the same title, just in different languages with varying names. There is a search feature that lets you find specific games, it's your best bet for determining if something is on here or not, because the way they list them is archaic and jumbled. Sometimes games that exist on the cart aren't listed in the official lists. And consoles like the Atari 2600 have very incomplete libraries, literally only having games that start with the letter A. There are some Dreamcast games, I'm guessing because that's the highest the system can handle, but we're talking like 8 of them. The OS is custom too, so adding games may or may not work. There's a soccer ball shaped trigger in the center of the console that I have yet to find a use for, even after reading the manual. I'm starting to think it might be a dead button. If you just wanna play older games, this works fine. It comes with a decent case, support for save states and other fun features, but the real problem is the library. A lot of clutter, broken games, homebrew and regional specific content choke the libraries and make it difficult to find anything you might actually want to play. But if all you care about is NES, SNES, GBA and some Genesis (there's 32X but no SEGA CD), it's a nice pocket carry console. It comes with replacement screen protectors and everything, it's just missing vital software to make some of the games work.

This was a Christmas gift for my teenage daughter and it didn’t last a month. After maybe 15 hours of cumulative use, the screen started to flicker so badly that I could barely read the menu options to try and reset it. After attempting a factory reset there was no improvement, so that’s that. Fortunately it died within the return window - if I had bought it well before Christmas like a good parent I would have been out of luck. The device did have a good assortment of games, but the more advanced consoles like Nintendo DS seemed to be too much for the graphics card and chip speed to handle. The games were choppy and the screen would flicker (although who knows, maybe it was an early sign of my problems to come). If you stick to the classic 8-bit and 16-bit console games it seemed to work fine. One other nitpick is there’s no way to see the current battery state of charge. If you’re playing a game that needs to be saved the device will just power off without warning when the battery is low wiping out any game progress. It’s annoying but probably something I could have lived with.
