  • Great option for a home server
I recently picked up the Aoostar R1 as an addition to my home network setup to help locally store videos and security camera recordings. Considering the compact form factor, adequate power from the N150, and the ability to add 2x 3.5” hard drives, this fit my needs perfectly and at a reasonable price. Setting up the computer was super easy – I went through the initial setup process and was up and running in a matter of minutes. As with all new computers, I did a fresh install of Windows 11. Note, you will need to reinstall the ethernet drivers, but Aoostar provides them on their website, and you can simply add it to a USB stick after installing Windows and using the local user account setup option. Size wise, the computer was a bit larger than I expected, especially compared to some smaller mini-PCs, but that comes with the territory of being able to fit 2 full-size hard drives inside. I do like the ability to install drives without any tools. You just simply lift off the magnetic top lid using the pull tab, push the clip and slide out the drive mounting brackets. The computer does not support hot swapping, so please keep that in mind! In terms of power, the N150 is more than adequate for most home media server and storage use. While it won’t rival a full powered desktop processor, setting up a RAID drive and accessing files is done without hesitation. The benefit of the N150 is how quiet the machine is. I currently have it setup in a guest bedroom, and you can’t hear it running! All in all, this was a really great purchase. I’m excited to put it to use with adding a few more security cameras around my house and moving a lot of my photo and video archives to local storage. ... show more

  • Great specs in a creative design for an affordable home server
I've been running it for about a month with no issues. Currently using external hard drives for media storage, as that's what I had on hand. Looking forward to adding internal drives as funds allow. Will update this review once I do so. So far it's been absolutely silent, even while transcoding video. I may eventually replace the Windows 11 Pro operating system with something more NAS-specific, but so far it's been simple enough to use. Configuring Windows Firewall can be confusing for certain server applications, but shipping this with Windows 11 Pro is a value for those who know Windows. The processor is fast enough for a NAS, playing media, and web browsing. I wouldn't use it for anything like gaming or creative work. My laptop recently died, and I used this as a backup workstation for a few weeks while I shopped for a new one. In that respect I'm glad I kept Windows on it, as it allowed me to get a few things done. I haven't figured out how to configure the dual Ethernet ports to work to my advantage, but that might just be my lack of networking knowledge. So I just use one port. Size is much larger than a standard mini PC, in order to accommodate the two hard drive bays. But the vertical design makes it compact for what it contains. Decent amount of ports for what you pay. This computer is not for everyone, but it suited my needs. ... show more

  • Good for 1 maybe 2 devices
I mean if you looking for a simple nas server this would be it, my problem with it was I have multiple things accessing at one time and it was super slow to communicate. Just for a standalone file server it would be great. I returned and got a the one with the Ryzen 7

  • Solid NAS for the Intermediate Home User
My existing Aoostar mini PC has been running smoothly, so I figured I would get their R1 mini PC to improve my home networking setup. Similar to my other mini PC, it was plug and play, it had all the basics ready to go, was plenty powerful, and was super quiet. I ended up installing 2 16TB drives in a RAID 1 config for redundancy. Great capacity, and the 512 GB SSD keeps things running smoothly. The only thing I would have liked would be a second RAM slot, but otherwise, this NAS checks all my boxes! Definitely worth a buy! ... show more

  • Great little NAS platform
I bought this little guy to run Proxmox Backup Server to backup my Proxmox VE virtual machines and Linux containers along with network backups for four Macs. After installing Proxmox VE, I created two VM's: one for running PBS and another for the SMB shares for the Macs. i installed two 22 TB Seagate Exos drives and after some minimal configuration, this machine has been running 24/7 with no issues. It even handles remote backups to a Hetzner Storage Box in Finland. The N150 CPU is perfectly suited for this amount of usage and data transfer, thanks to the help of the 2.5Gb Ethernet ports. The ability to use large capacity 3.5" hard drives makes all the difference. The alternative solution would have likely been to buy a mini PC and an external hard drive enclosure. Given that, this machine has saved me money both in hardware purchases and in electricity as an external enclosure would need it's own high output power supply. Not mention that it's nice and tidy compared to having multiple connected devices. I'd definitely recommend this device to anyone looking for a mini PC or small NAS for home storage. ... show more

  • Good value 2 bay NAS w/ quicksync
Default TDP is 12W, probably able to be configured in BIOS Standard N150/N100 tier cpu, great value for a 2 bay NAS. I'm using it for a truenas install for an on-site backup. I received an nvme SSD that is an ASint 806 (Maxio MAP1202C-F1C (22nm) controller + Kioxia 112L TLC (BiCS5). Good controller + NAND. I also replaced the wifi card with an A+E to M key adapter which can fit a 2230 or 2242 ssd (but not a 2280, not enough space for that) good if you need a no frills 2 bay 3.5" NAS, it's better value than the other 2 bay NASes out there, especially since it has 2x intel 2.5GbE ethernet ports instead of a realtek driver nightmare. ... show more
