This is the second purchase with Qnap. The first one come after analyzing different product and decided to try out qnap. their product did satisfy me, but i started to look in more advanced set up. This was really great value for the money, runnig a X86_64 architecture and an expandable RAM of 64gb is plenty for advanced set up. give you the possibility to start with some and still have room to expand having 2 PCIe, depending on the needs you are going to use one, since if an external graphic card is installed the room in the case is going to fill it up pretty much entirely. Great piece of hardware, and good easy to use software.

First, watch the youtube videos on how to set it up. I primarily bought this to store backup files from all of our PCs around the house. I primarily use Acronis to create image files to store on this server. I also copied my extensive music collection which includes mp3 and avi files that I digitalized from 200 recording tapes. Music station indexed the files on the server and I use Qmusic to play through my Android phone. Also use Qfile to remotely access files from the server. Many other apps available. The server uses QTS with is a version of Linux. I found that the two 2.5Gbps network connections to be very useful. I connected one to my one gigabit Asus router and the other to the 2.5 Gbps network connector on my video editing PC (I run windows 10). I installed four 18tb drives in a raid 5. Upgrade memory from 8gigs to 32 gigs and installed an m2 drive to hold the programs. Qnap tries to have useful wizards to help set things up. The terminology can be confusing. The youtube videos helped tremendously. Very happy with this purchase.

I purchased this drive primarily as an NVR for my home surveillance system. I purchased this as well as an extended license for QVR Pro (QNAP's NVR software). I also purchased additional RAM and compatible hard drives. Everything was working fine for the first 6 months. I have 10 cameras around the house. It was recording, the mobile app was mostly useable. After 6 months, the issues started to arise. They had a software update that completely broke the NAS. The NAS would constantly hang and freeze. They suggested downgrading to a previous version of the operating system. I did so, but many of the other apps had been updated and were not compatible with the previous version of the OS. So, it will STILL unusable after downgrading. I waited weeks for them to release a hotfix. After the hotfix was released the system kind of worked and would only completely freeze every week or so. The support then started to blame my hardware. At first, they said my hard drives were incompatible (even though I got them from their recommended hard drive list, and the system worked great for the first 6 months before their software update), and that I needed to replace them with newer much more expensive hardware. I'm not sure why, but I bought the higher-end hard drives, but to no avail. The system would just continue to freeze completely. Then they said that my RAM was the issue, again, even though the RAM was on their supported RAM list. I went back to the included stock RAM of 4GB (instead of the 16GB I had upgraded to), turned off the NVR software, and waited. Lo-and-behold, the system STILL froze after a few days with basically ZERO load! The only way to recover was to hard boot the system. I am just completely baffled by the ineptitude of the support staff, having me go through the same steps every time I raise a ticket, and the lack of any real solutions. I still strongly believe the issue has to do with one of their software "updates" completely borking my system. At this point, I am completely giving up and throwing in the towel and just considering this $1000+ investment and countless hours down the drain. Hopefully, I'll be able to salvage as much as I can. I'm sticking with Synology, of which I still have 2 older models that are working great. No more QNAP for me!

I've had this unit for two years now, and although I'm not "disappointed" with it, my interactions with the QuTS Hero software and QNAP tech support have been underwhelming. Yes, QuTS supports docker containers running various servers you might need. No, it doesn't consistently work. I've just switched over to TrueNAS SCALE (community version, which is free) and am very happy. Four stars because the TS-473A works well with third-party OS software, and the hardware is fine. -1 star because I struggled with trying to keep things running properly with the QuTS Hero software. +- 0 stars for no data loss over two years.

I have always viewed Qnap as one of the best in the NAS space.. I'm probably not incorrect with that thinking just not impressed with this experience. I bought this QNAP TS-473A-8G-US 4 Bay last week and experienced trouble from the moment I tried to dock the HD's. The HD bay #1 is mounted very close to some of the cabling inside the case and one of the cables was sticking out far enough to create friction and not allow the drive tray to slide into position correctly. After getting that worked out, i though I was in the clear, think again! Two of the three Seagate Ironwolf 8tb drives I placed in the unit would not recognize and threw up a red error light.. OK bad drives! I sent the bad drives back and got replacement units. I tested the new drives in my HD dock and they were good, so I mounted them in the NAS and only one drive would recognize.. OK, all three lights on the NAS are green now and one of the original drives is suddenly not working. I swapped the new/replacement drive into another bay and the other bay works.. Ok maybe more bad drives, but this doesn't make since. So I reach out to Qnap Tech support, and after waiting 5 hours for a response, I have decided to return the unit. I would like to have a working Qnap of this model number but don't want ongoing issues. I wouldn't say "buyer beware" because I'm hoping I just got a lemon unit. The part that frustrated me was the lack of response from the help/support services.
