  • Perfect fit and easy to install
Wanted to engage my Son on a joint project and decided to build a TV speaker system for him. In addition to these, used a vintage Boston Acoustics Amp, and a Subwoofer (both found in the city swap-shack). These are powerful and sounds great.

  • Surprising Output for Price
You're looking at a pair of $16 speakers for a reason, right? Maybe you have a small room. Maybe you have a smaller budget. Maybe you want to try something out before committing to a larger investment. Maybe this is a component that complements you current audio setup. In any case, you're reading the reviews because you have one question in your head: Can a pair of $16 speakers possibly be any good? The answer is yes. These little speakers perform remarkably well for the price. And in some cases, you may even be able to remove the caveat "for the price." I bought these to upgrade my home office. Listening to music through my Amazon Basics computer speakers just wasn't the experience I wanted. But for the smallish room (maybe 12' by 12'), I also didn't need something that was going to blow me out the window. I already have two turntable setups, and I didn't want to invest in a third system. The price tag, as well as the quick shipping, sealed the deal for me. I have them connected to a Pioneer receiver I had lying around after an upgrade a few years ago. I added a (very old) center speaker, mostly because why not? Honestly, these 3" speakers do most of the lifting. I was surprised by how loud they can be. And while you certainly wouldn't expect a lot of bass with these, they still hold their own. I listen to a lot of fuzzy, low-end riffs, and these speakers performed much better than my computer speakers. I like that I can still keep these even if I upgrade my system. They're small an inexpensive enough to move to a garage or other exposed space. If you're like me, you have a box of old AV stuff somewhere (noteworthy - these don't come with speaker wire) - you can toss these speakers in and use them in your front yard for Halloween or give them to your niece when she goes off to college. The cost, size, and versatility mean you're not overcommitting yourself. I'm in that narrow space where I'm not an audiophile, but I'm still picky about audio quality. These get the job done for me. ... show more

  • Sound was better than I expected.
I bought these used, just as the seller described them to be. They came packaged in a little orange and white box, each speaker wrapped in bubble wrap. I took one out and it was weighty. It looked in pretty good condition. I looked at the back and it had a Red and Black clips to insert a stereo wire in. It doesn't come with the stereo wire, you have to order that yourself. I found a place on the web called Crutchfield that sells the wire by the foot. I went in the box and took out the other speaker. I reached into the bubble wrap and pulled it out. It had two big cracks going from the speaker to the edge. The top lid popped off easily with the speaker attached and the screw holders were broken off in half. I gasped "What the Fee-Fi-Fo"...#$%^&!! I took the little peices out with the screws and tossed them. I put the lid with the speaker back on the box and rubber band them together. I hooked them up to the stereo and wow the sound was amazing for the condition they were in. For what I paid for them, I don't regret it. The bass doesn't shake or rattle walls, it just gives a basic deep sound and the treb is fine too. These speakers DO NOT have a transistor like cheap sound. They're pretty clear when the volume is turned up to comfortably loud, but if the volume is turned up to louder than they could handle, then they'll give a buzzing and hissing sound. These use only Stereo wire that can hook up to a stereo reciever or a little amp, they do NOT contain computer speaker wire connections. ... show more

  • A Waste of Sticky Feet
Like many others purchasing these speakers, I was hoping to upgrade the sound quality of built-in speakers on a flat screen TV. Initial impressions were generally positive, the speakers arrived quickly and securely packaged. Overall fit and finish was not too shabby. The heft and feel contributed to the good vibe. I would not be embarrassed to have them in the living room. Unfortunately, things went downhill quickly from here. I put some little sticky feet (not included) on the speakers to keep them from bouncing around and hooked them up. Powering them with the Lepai LP-A68 Digital 2 x 15W Amplifier with Remote/USB/MP3/SD/FM, I was unable to drive them to adequate listening levels. By comparison, the Lepai amp easily pushes my Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers (Black), leading me to the conclusion that the Pyle cubes are not terribly efficient. The sound quality was not all that spectacular either - though marginally better than the built-in speakers. Curious as to how they would perform using more capable amplification, I lashed them to my Yamaha RX-V475 (80W per channel) receiver and tuned to my favorite classic rock station. I immediately noticed they weren't as loud as the Miccas (which I had just disconnected) at the same volume setting. I increased the volume in small steps to reach a moderate listening level. The bass output, as others have noted, exceeded expectations for such a small speaker. The treble, however, was harsh and tinny. Further evaluation (at least in stereo) was unceremoniously cut short by the abrupt failure of the left channel speaker. Post-mortem examination (with my Fluke multi-meter) revealed that the three inch driver's voice coil windings had opened (melted), resulting in loss of cone excursion (silence). I estimate the Yamaha was hitting them with about 10 watts of power at the time of failure - well within their advertised 100W power handling capabilities. This disappointing failure did create an opportunity to (unfairly) evaluate the surviving speaker side-by-side against the MB42X. Trust me, the Pyles don't even come close to the efficiency and silky response of the Micca. The harsh and hissing treble characteristics became unbearable to me within just a few more minutes of listening. The very best part of my experience with the Pyle PCB3BK speakers came in pulling the wires and hooking up something decent. At this point, I'm not sure pursuing a warranty claim is even remotely worthwhile. My advice: Skip this disappointing offering, save your pennies, and buy yourself some real speakers. ... show more
