All in all, I think this is a fabulous value product backed by an incredible company which genuinely values their customers and will go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. We purchased this almost two months ago. The picture book instructions left quite a bit to be desired, however, the customer service exceeded all reasonable expectations for the most optimistic customers. We spent 14 (possibly more) hours putting it together, correcting mistakes repeatedly. This was with 2 intermediate level DIY adults, plus an occasional assist from our engineering minded, college age son. Exhausted, we were ready for the last piece - the cover that protects the canopy when closed (and the reason we settled on this model) but were disappointed to find it had a couple small holes. We have no idea if the holes were a defect or if damage happened while moving things around for the multiple assembly corrections. Regardless, we emailed support truthfully explaining we were not sure if the holes were a defect or happened during assembly. They responded within hours asking for photos of the hole and were kind enough to provide a replacement. Not only that, they kept us apprised of the shipping status and checked in after delivery. The canopy opens and closes easily and provides shelter from a light drizzle off when open. It won't help a lot during a downpour, but it is not marketed to protect from rain so we are very pleased with the quality. I shared two recommendations customer support is to A) include words in the instruction booklet and/or B) upload an assembly video. Additionally, a third would be two more straps to keep it more securely closed during windy rainstorms -- the one in the middle does not quite do it. We expect this to last for several summers, and possibly beyond several summers, if the company sells or we can find a canopy replacement when needed.

My wife always wanted a cover on our upper deck. I use to spend most of my time in my nicely done lower deck (right under upper deck). So I started thinking of options. Could I build something with timber? I'm 63 now, so perhaps not. Went with the 13x10 Purple Leaf pergola with the retractable roof. We really like it. Price is amazing. Quality is very good. One thing we did to improve design. Our model has the cover over the retracted panels. That cover is material and the rain collects on top of it, the weight pushes if down between the supports making a cover decided into 4 sections very full of water. I put a 12'x26" galvanized steel roofing panel of it and now NO RAIN GETS IN,easy and works. Slight angle so all the rains runs right off the end. We really love the gazebo.

Putting this on a roof deck, I found that the pointed ends of the cross bars stuck out just a bit too far to let the rest of the pergola fit. I was able to use a basic angle grinder to quickly cut off the points on one end of each of the cross bars (the steel and aluminum ones both cut easily enough). While I was at it, I also shortened the legs on one end so that it would sit level on my sloped roof deck. If you are worried about it fitting, know you can definitely modify this as long as you don't plan on moving any of the holes that have threaded anchors in them. Pay very close attention to the assembly as the three rails that hold the awning are directional. If you cut the wrong ends, you won't have the holes to mount the small canopy at the right end. (From experience! Self drilling screws to the rescue!)

I would have given 5 stars except for the instructions. Several parts of the installation are critical and needs special notifications. Not noting the nuance of special attention, I made an error. So I had to mostly disassemble and reassemble correctly. The second time went a lot faster. One reviewer complained about a bent standard. I too had that but that was resolved by loosening the bolts holding the sections together and aligning the units. Then retightened the bolts and all is fine now. I highly suggest the slightly more expensive model with the auxiliary cover over the sliding cover - it keeps rain out of the folded cover and will probably extent life of the main cover by protecting it from UV when folded. I had three slightly damaged pieces, two of which were hidden by plastic collars after assembly. I straightened out the bent pieces and assembled. There was no issue with them. The third was a minor dimple in one of the supporting columns. While not a big issue, it is noticeable. But not enough to call it in, delay final assembly, and redoing some work. I'll live with it. So the big issue is directions. The magnet locations to keep the cover over need to be highlighted to ensure the assembler is paying attention. I wasn't. The other was the location of the nuts embedded in the rafters to accept the mounts of the accessory cover. I messed up there. But in all, Quality of the product - 5 star, looks of the product - 5 Star, Sturdiness of the product - 5 Star, Instructions - 4 Star.

This Purple Leaf Pergola is exactly what we desired to create more shade on our oversized deck. Our pup and grands would go out on the deck and their barefoot feet would hurt from the sun on the deck. Only thing to do was to create SHADE! Overall it is 5 stars, but the instructions are slightly lacking as there are no words....just pictures/drawings. There are a couple areas it is easy to mess up due to lack of a "blow-up" drawing, or words - BUT - it is not too bad to correct! My husband did most of this on his own. I assisted when more than one person was needed and in instruction interpretation. Overall, we LOVE this pergola! They do sell replacement canopies when the time comes that one is needed! We were not missing any pieces and all arrived in great shape. We are enjoying our deck more! So are the grands and our pup!

Like everyone says you need at minimum 2 people to put together. Wasn't super hard to put together but it did take a few hours, maybe 4-5. I'm glad I purchased it, and at this size (10'x12'). If I were to do it again I may even consider getting a bigger one to fit a bigger patio set with side table, but this one fits my day to day so its perfect.
