The summer sun in Texas is intense and hot. We searched for a solution that would provide shade for a vegetable garden with no natural shade. Last year, we tried using shade cloths but they did not endure the frequency or strength of the winds in our rural setting This structure is intended to be bolted to an existing concrete patio or wooden deck that our vegetable garden obviously did not have, so we were concerned about our ability to create 4 perfectly level bases for the 4 posts in the middle of our pre-existing garden. The louvered roof was just what we needed and the majority of the reviews were encouraging. That, along with the number of reviews which praised the quality of the materials and the prompt and thorough responses by Purple Leaf for those who had questions or issues, convinced us to take a chance. This structure must be mounted on a stable and level surface. This required us to pour 4 separate concrete footings (12 and 14 ft apart in our case), each one at the exact height and perfectly square in relation to the others. Because of our winds, I wanted the feet of the posts to be bolted to anchors I set in each footing. Getting the four pads of concrete in the appropriate location was not too difficult, but the challenge was in setting the bolts in the concrete pilings perfectly, so that the posts would ultimately sit in line with those adjacent to it. Long story short, it can be done! It all turned out well. Photos show the variation in height of the pads and 8” anchor bolts set in the concrete for mounting. The pieces were shipped securely in heavy duty packaging. Each painted piece was protected by a sturdy plastic layer which had to be peeled off every surface, including the front and back of each louver. It took a little effort to remove it all, but we appreciated the quality and the protection it provided. No scratches or dents on any of our pieces! All the components fit very well and all the hardware necessary to complete the job was included . The instructions that come with the pergola aren’t great but are good enough to get the job done. The measurements in the literature are quite accurate. The pergola is well constructed and has a nice paint finish. There were no scratches or dents and there were no missing pieces. The package we ordered included 3 louvered panels to install as “ walls.” We have not yet installed those so I cannot comment on my experience, but based on the quality and fit of the adjustable louvers on the roof and the pergola itself, I anticipate no issues. NOTES: Some small tools are included for installation. I would highly suggest having a good Philips screwdriver and some 10mm hex tools. The small screwdrivers provided were extremely light duty and broke after one use. Having some good tools of your own will make the job much easier. Unless you are skilled and experienced with mechanical things and have some knowledge of construction, I would highly suggest having some capable help with this installation. Some of the components are heavy and awkward. I did ours by myself, but I am skilled in those fields. We are quite pleased with this purchase and would not hesitate to purchase another one if needed. The pergola is beautiful and functional. Assembly was easier than expected, but some directions could have been explained/ shown better in the manual. Assembly completed by husband and wife, 2 ladders and minimal extra tools. Be careful assembling in the sun, as the pieces can get very hot. The protective film was quite difficult to remove from some pieces, and left quite a bit of sticky residue in some places (assuming due to sunlight). 1 box of fins arrived damaged, but Purple Leaf was very swift in responding to our request and sent a new box in a timely manner free of charge. We leave it open slightly when sunny to allow for air circulation. Overall a very pleasant product and experience, just a few kinks to work through. A TON of packing materials are used and create a challenge in disposing of them. PS: The 10 boxes are VERY heavy, but our FedEx driver was amazing and helped put them where we were assembling the pergola! ... show more

I cannot be happier with this product. First and foremost the customer service is hands down the best I have seen in a long time. They reached out to make sure I got everything and offered support if I needed to speak with anyone proactively, not just a number but emailed for follow up because I had one box that took longer than the rest due to Fed Ex. I told them I was setting up over the weekend and Monday they checked to ensure I had everything but rain delayed us putting it up. Again they emailed to check on things a week later. It was awesome. It was only myself (a normal sized woman) and my boyfriend to set it up on my concrete slab and we were easily able to do it. Due to rain it took us a couple of days to get it completely up but day 1 was the legs and main frame which took 1 1/2 hours to inbox everything and get things all up and moved where we wanted it to anchor. Day 2 was all the seats and they were so much easier than expected to put up. It took longer for the anchor holes than to finish up the slats. The shades took us a bit longer because the supplied screws were not great and stripped on install so we ran to Lowes and grabbed some self tapping screws that worked a lot better and things went super fast again. Even with that I am not disappointed at all. It looks great and is already working well for us in the TX heat. We also have had a couple big storms with high winds and so far so good just open the slats when the winds get high. I highly recommend this product and would refer it to anyone. I will try to do a follow up in 6 months to see how it lasts through a south TX summer. ... show more

Solid Pergola, with some caveats

I'm one of this people who research everything to the nth degree before a purchase. In my search for the perfect pergola, I found they varies in price greatly. You can spend $1500 to well over $15K. I decided on this particular brand because they had a lot of reviews and they responded to presale inquiries in a timely manner. Since I live in Southern California, I didn't have to worry hurricanes or snow load Delivery - This package came in 5 boxes and was delivered in 2 days. There was no damage to the boxes, but there were a few bent pieces that didn't really bother me. Installation - I'm not particularly handy, but this took me and one other person about 6 hours to install. The instructions were not great, but it's fairly obvious is you're doing something wrong. Quality - this thing feels very solid and the louvers are all quite nice to open and close. The 11'x14' unit I purchased does not come with curtains, and Purple Leaf will not sell you accessories after the fact, but this was generally easy to work around. Caveats - There is no easy way to hang lights on the pergola without drilling,and nothing sticky will stay stuck very long, we ended up using zip ties to make things work. Lastly, this pergola is not waterproof. The middle beam is two pieces and during the last rain storm, water was leaking out of the seam like it was a rain gutter. This was disappointing as we thought we'd have respite from the rain under this pergola. We have tightened the screws, filled the seams with loctite, and wrapped it with water proof gorilla tape. Hopefully this fixes the issue, we won't know until the next rain comes, which could be awhile in Southern California. Overall for the price, the unit looks really good, is very solidly constructed and with after market rails and curtains we are pretty satisfied with the purchase. Minus 1 star for having the middle beam act as a rain gutter without being water proof. EDIT. We raised on side of the pergola with bricks to give it a slight slope and taped/caulked the center beam seam, now this pergola no longer leaks. 5 star project. I wish there was a way to mount things in the center beam like a project or fan. Otherwise it's a very solid purchase ... show more

Very impressed with this so far. I’ve only had it up for a week at this point. Took 3 of us all day to put it together but we took our time. Directions are good but the pictures were hard to see the details. A video should be made for such a big item. A few dings but nothing major and with 11 boxes, you have to expect it with how much handle they go through. Took 3 days to get all the boxes. Was worried that I was missing 2 boxes but customer service gave me tracking numbers of every box so I knew when they were coming. Only issue with leaking is the center beam. The clips given to cover the connections are flimsy and don’t stay on. A little silicone will seal things up. Very minor dripping in heavy rain. Overall quality of this is very good. One minor inconvenience is the amount of plastic covering all the exposed sides and having to peel it off. So much but it’s worth it when it’s all together. ... show more

It’s pretty nice quality and looks nice when done. We were missing the instructions and there were some damaged pieces from shipping but they email a manual by the next day and replaced the damaged pieces I needed. It’s not to hard to assemble but pulling the protective tape was the worst part but you need it so it doesn’t get scratched. Seems to not leak but we haven’t been under it when it’s raining really hard yet we ll see. ... show more

If you’re on the fence, buy it! This Purple Leaf pergola is beautiful and built like a tank. We’ve already tested it, and when those louvers are closed, the space underneath stays dry. Putting it together is a two-person job and takes some time. Ironically, the actual construction wasn't the tough part, it was the infinite test of patience peeling the protective tape off every individual unit. We also had a great experience with their customer service. We were missing the instructions and the hand crank, but Purple Leaf handled it instantly, emailing the guide and rushing the part to us. 12’x14’ With Roll Shades and Lights Review The items were packaged very well. I would like to see a label on the outside of the box that lists the parts inside however the boxes are labeled 1, 2, 3 … and as long as you open box one first you find the instructions and logic takes you to box 2, 3, 4 … I believe the Pergola is well constructed. The instructions are easy to understand and I had a total of around 14 hours assembling it. Time was lengthened because I spread it over a few days. I had assistance from my wife, son and a friend. Assembly is not for every homeowner, I am a retired automotive technician and handyman so if you know you don't have mechanical skills or cannot follow instructions find someone who is and can. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Once the structure is assembled, start squaring it before you ever think of drilling mounting holes. Drill one hole and place one bolt loosely on one post. From that anchored post measure between two posts at the top then make sure you have the same measurement at the bottom. Do this in all directions so it is set fairly square then measure the diagonal between posts for the final squaring. When you feel you have it square measure again, drill and anchor the next post. Mine was mounted to a concrete slab and I ordered a 13mm concrete bit for the job. I know ½” is so close to 13mm it probably would have worked but I spent 12 bucks on two bits and if something went wrong Purple leaf can’t say I used the wrong bit. The roller shades were simple to install however the instructions don’t list drill sizes. Your most likely going to make a trip to the hardware store because the M5 screws require a #27 bit and the M3 screws require a #39. Don’t think any drill bit close will work, you will be sorry. Follow the instructions and you will be fine. My kit was not sold with both lights and roller shades. I could not find a light kit only on Amazon so I contacted PL and they guided me in the right direction. I got the light kit after I had the pergola assembled. It may have been easier to install the tape and led strips if the beams were on the ground but it was doable on a ladder. I did find I needed to remove two screws from one end of the center beam so I could run the wire. I would suggest this brand pergola to friends and family and look forward to setting under it. ... show more
