I ordered this pergola so I could have some shade on my deck in the afternoon. The assembled product is great. The retractable cover is easy to deploy and retract, and it has two spring clips that hold it fairly securely in the closed position. Since it's lightweight aluminum, it does sway a bit with a moderate breeze, but not so much as to cause concern. The only thing I feel could be improved with the design is adding some way to hold the cover in the open position. I've addressed this by attaching a length of paracord to the strap and tying the other end to my deck railing. The only real issues I had with this product are around the assembly process. As some other reviewers have noted, there are many pieces and many screws involved in the assembly process. On my pergola, many of the screw holes didn't align perfectly with one another, so I had to spend a lot of time widening the holes with a drill so the screws would fit. One of the pieces in my kit also arrived with a large dent, but the company promptly sent me a replacement once I made them aware of the situation. Overall, I would still recommend this pergola with the caveat that you should expect to encounter some issues during assembly. If you are comfortable with this and are handy enough to address these issues, then this is a great product at a great price. I was able to assemble it entirely on my own, but I needed to get creative with ladders and rope to hold the frame steady when attaching the first two cross bars. Excellent product! It was easy to assemble, definitely it is a job for two people but instruction manual was relatively clear. As I expected one challenge was to secure posts to the concrete floor but I purchased a special bit for concrete and used expansion bolts suggested by manual so it worked fine. Other than securing posts the rest of installation was like "walk in the park", my wife and I finished installation in one day. Their Customer Service is perfect! During installation I noticed few missing plastic plugs, nothing critical. So I sent email to manufacturer on Saturday expecting to receive a response the earliest Monday - Tuesday. But I received a response almost instantly with assurances that the missing parts will be shipped immediately. What I also love about this product that it is very sturdy and solidly built while doesn't look heavy at all. I was worry that my 12' x 16' pergola would look like heavy structural frame in my backyard but Purple Leaf pergola doesn't look heavy and didn't overpower my backyard. We decided a 105° day would be the best time to put this up! (Insert snark) It took almost 5 hours but that was with many water and shade breaks. The instructions were pretty clear and all the pieces were clearly marked. There was a small dent in one piece but it did not effect anything. The pergola is beautiful and adds so much to the poolside comfort. We have had very high winds (AZ desert monsoon season) and it is faring very well. We are very pleased and may buy another for a different part of the yard. ... show more

Most outdoor, put it together yourself, home improvement projects have issues right? (e.g. instructions in a foreign language, contradictory images, no directions, missing parts, etc.) NOT THIS ONE! Easy to follow visual instructions, no guess work, logical steps, and accurate drawings all greeted me when I opened the box. Each piece was carefully labeled and I had extra screw-in parts in case I lost one. EASY to follow EASY to assemble, EASY to enjoy! Took me a few hours and I LOVE IT! ... show more

Very happy with the pergola, but was most impressed with the customer service. We needed some additional bolt caps, since some did not fit properly. I emailed them , and they responded very quickly, asked me for the model and a picture of the part. This is my revised review. We received this pergola and did a complete item by item checklist, making sure we had all the parts. It appeared that we did, that is, until we started to build it. When we got about half way through, we found that the parts listed B and B1 and C and C1 were incorrect. This held us up for about 2 weeks while we worked with customer service and finally got the correct parts shipped to us. Now the pergola is finally assembled and looks great. It took a long time to get there though. Instructions are not the best. My recommendation would be to use the instructions as a guideline, and use your head to really think it through. The end result is good though. The quality appears to be solid and nicely finished. It was a frustrating project overall, but worth the extra effort. Thank you ... show more
