  • MUST READ if you are getting a puppy
Can I give this more than 5 stars? This book was THAT GOOD! I was told to get this book before our puppy arrived, and I am SO glad I did. Not only did I follow his development as he was growing, but I was prepared and confident for our little guy's arrival. Doesn't matter what dog breed you are getting, this book will educate you on the entire process of getting a new dog. You will learn about how puppies develop and why the environment in which they are raised in is so vital to their development. Why is the right breeder necessary for a healthy dog. Anyone can breed dogs, but should they be? If you are searching for a breeder, Kerry helps you understand what to ask a breeder, what should you know BEFORE choosing a breeder. What she taught me in her book, helped me feel confident in our choice of breeders. Then once a puppy is born, learn how they develop, week by week. We followed the growth of our little guy and marveled in his progress with our breeder. As the book described the milestones, our breeder shared them with the liter families through videos and messages and I understood my puppies progress. The preparations for our gotcha day were easy to follow and I am so glad I took the time to prepare the house like the book says. Even better, were the next three days when we focused on our puppy. He settled right into the family without any problems because we were prepared for the time we needed to devote to him. This book teaches the humans the dog's body language and how to read the dog, learn the movements that he/she is telling you. On some of our first walks after our puppy arrived home, we would just sit and watch the world. I learned that his brain was processing everything going on around him. Something we take for granted was so important to his socialization and development. When my puppy stops on a walk and puts his brakes on, I know something is not okay for him, and we take a moment to assess. In the past, I would have pulled him along forcing him to be afraid of something on the walk which could affect future walks. When my puppy starts biting really hard, I know he is tired and without looking at the clock, I know its nap time. When he goes in his crate, he goes right to sleep. He is telling me his is tired. I need to listen. Those are only a few of the examples of how this book has helped our family with our new puppy. There are so many more. I share this book with anyone I know who is thinking about a puppy. Dog training has changed over the years, it's time to grow with the changes and help your dog have the best start they can in this world. Even now that he is 17 weeks old, I am still referring back to this book for topics I need to refresh, or viewing the author's website for training help or her Amazon list for items we need. I can't say enough good things about this book and Kerry Nichols. My breeder follows Kerry and her puppy rearing is similar to what Kerry does with her puppies. I have such an amazing puppy who had the best start possible and then I have tried to keep it going when he came to us. We are confidently raising this puppy because of this book and the advice in it. I am so glad I was told to buy this book. Kerry Nichols is incredibly educated when it comes to dogs and a valuable resource to anyone who owns a dog. Follow her on social media to learn more about raising dogs. Thank you Kerry for all the time and effort that you put into this book! A true treasure! ... show more

  • For anyone who wants a deeper bond with their dog!
Puppy Brain completely shifted the way I communicate and connect with my dogs. It offers such a fresh and thoughtful perspective — one I had never come across before. Instead of focusing solely on “training the dog,” the book encourages us to first look at our own habits and energy. I love the concept of “training the humans”. It’s both eye-opening and empowering. I was lucky that this book came out just as our puppy Ryder joined the family, but I’ve found myself returning to it again and again — not just for him, but also for our 5-year-old dog as well. It’s changed the way I relate to both of them and reminded me that how we show up matters just as much as what we teach. I’m so glad Puppy Brain is now available in paperback — it deserves to reach as many people as possible! This book isn’t just about raising a puppy; it’s about building a meaningful, lifelong relationship with your dog. ... show more

  • Thinking of getting a puppy? A must read book!
Kerry does an exceptional job of outlining how important the first 14 weeks of a dogs life is. How this 14 weeks helps shape who your dog will be. It helps you understand how to raise a fear free dog. How to look at the world from his perspective. It’s not a training book about teaching the perfect obedient dog (the market is saturated with those). It’s a book about getting the behaviors you want through choice, communication and setting the puppy’s space up for developmental success. This book helps you understand the importance of honoring your dog, building trust and asking yourself ”what is best for my dog?”. It teaches you how choice, layering exposures to new things and environment can set your dog up for success rather than behavioral failures. Which is sadly why so many dogs end up in shelters. Lack of the owner understanding what they need to be set up for success. Ultimately it teaches you how to help your dog navigate the world, so that they are calm, happy and can go anywhere with you. It is written beautifully and you can watch along with a litter of puppies in instagram just how important the activities outlined and the layering of positive experiences for the puppy result in raising a resilient happy puppy. I put it up there with Sophia Yin and her fear free handling. In the ideal world everyone getting a puppy should read this! I was lucky enough to raise a fear free Doodle because I was friends with an animal behaviorist a long time ago. This was a refresher for me before I get a new puppy. There is nothing better than raising a dog who feels secure in their life and who is not afraid of things because they had the exposure to build confidence in their first 14 weeks. It’s why doing research into your breeder and asking questions before you commit it important. Great book I hope it becomes a Classic! ... show more
