  • Great for an 8" snowfall, and still helped immensely with 12"+. Easily has the bang for the buck over gas if 8"+ is rare.
I was really on the fence between this item, and an 18amp SnowJoe at 2x the cost. What put me over the edge on this model was reading a few reviews of people that said they had used 15 and 18amp electric blowers that didn't appear to have the power of this one. Also, many of the 18amp reviews complained about the rubber auger. When I saw both of those statements, I investigated a bit deeper. It turns out any the 18amp SnowJoes I looked at had what looked to be a ~6" wide steel plate, with 100% rubber augers the entire width of the blower (look at the pictures of the product). This, to me, would cause deflection in the auger and would effectively lower the power. This Power Smart model actually has a steel auger the entire width of the machine, and then has separate rubber pieces mounted to the auger that stick out ~3/8" from it. I would think this to be the best of both worlds, as the rubber would be durable, but the metal would stop any power-eating deflection of the plastic. I first used this in the Philadelphia area during the late January Blizzard of 2016. There were about 12" of snow on the ground the first time I took it out, with drifts up to about 24". I did have to rock the machine back and forth a bit with this much snow, as otherwise it was leaving a lot behind (from going over it), but it got the job done. All in all, it was more than I expected for $100, and found it to be well worth the lesser money compared to the $600 gas model I had used for years at my parents, which had an inevitable $150 annual tune up fee besides. I took this Power Smart model back out after another ~6" of medium-heavy snow had fallen, and this is where this machine really shined. It had no problem going right through 6" of snow while I was doing a nice relaxing walk behind it. In all, it definitely helped with the 18" snowfall, and considering a storm with more than 6" is really rare anyway, it was well worth the $100 and lack of headaches over a much more expensive gas model. The other thing I liked is that I was able to get a really close cut to the driveway. There was little-to-no snow after a pass until the wind would step in. My neighbor has a big gas snow blower, and it left a good 1/4" layer. My driveway is now 70% dry, while his still flat out has snow on 80% of it. When the temps drop again tonight, I'll be really thankful for this, as he'll have a sheet of ice, and I won't. I should also note - people have said about using 16 gauge extension cords, which you should NOT do. This will burn out your motor prematurely, and is a fire hazard. The manual states that any extension cord used that's 50' and under should be 14 gauge, and 50' up to 100' should be 12 gauge. The only downside of the item thus far is that when the item arrived, I actually received 2 of them despite only ordering 1. This wasn't a problem in and of itself, however the first of the 2 boxes I opened was missing the hood from the top of the chute. Luckily I had the second one there to take the part from, and will now be returning the remaining second box to Amazon while alerting them it is incomplete. I would have been quite unhappy receiving the item the day before an 18" snowfall had I have been missing that major part. ... show more

  • This Thing Handled "Snowmaggedon" 2016 Pretty Well
I ordered and received the Power Smart just in time for "snowmageddon" here last weekend. My asphalt driveway covers about 2,800 sq.ft. in the front yard, running about 120'x10' from the garage door to the street, with an 80'x10' circular section attached to it in two spots. In front of the garage is another 31'x25' section of asphalt. I have over 500' of extension cord stowed in my garage. I thought I was good to go electricity-wise, until I found out early Friday that all but 15' of the wire was 16-3 gauge, not sufficient for a 100+ foot run (12-3 gauge wire needed). Three local hardware stores had no 12 gauge cord; one had 100' of 14-3 gauge wire. I bought the last one. The snow started coming down around 1pm on Friday. I waited until the snow level in my yard reached 6 inches and did a test run with the Power Smart on my driveway. Armed with 115' of wire, it took me about 40 minutes to clear the driveway, except for about a 20' section next to the street (beyond the reach of the wire). I manually shovelled this. On Saturday morning, I faced 8 inches of new snow on the driveway. This time, I left the circular section of driveway alone and focused on the area from the garage to the street (or 20' from it). I knocked this out in about 40 minutes, having to maneuver around three vehicles. On Sunday morning, the snow had finally stopped, but there was another 8 inches of snow on the ground. I repeated what I did the previous day and finished this in about 40 minutes. PROS - Overall, we had 22 inches of snow and the Power Smart, at only $104, worked great. It "threw" snow up to 20' away. It handled snow 8 inches high with no problems. I believe the unit could handle snow 10 inches high equally easy, 12 inches high with some "push and pull" effort. It took 2 hours for me to fully "clean" 22 inches of snow from 2,000 sq.ft. of driveway and partially "clean" other 800 sq.ft. of driveway. I estimate that fully "throwing" 2,800 sq.ft. would have taken me under 3 hours. MOST IMPORTANTLY - "Look Ma, no sore back!" CONS - The snow that fell on Friday and Saturday was mostly powdery. The snow that fell overnight through Sunday morning was heavier and "wet." I had read that some people experienced the Power Smart's chute would clog in wetter, icier snow, but I did not experience this when the sun started slowly melting the snow. Also, you're limited by the length of wire at hand. More importantly, you have to be cognizant of where the wire is at all times. At a minimum, moving the wire around can be a nuisance. At the worst, if you run wire over with this thing....ouch. I had the wiring plugged into a ground-fault recepticle as protection. Be sure to do the same. TIPS - Make sure to have enough of the right gauge wire to do the job at hand. Also, pace yourself. I knew I was faced with up to 36 straight hours of snow. I took a little over 2 hours and chipped away at the job. Don't think you can "throw" 22 inches of snow at one setting with this unit. I'm sure some gas-powered units can do this, but fork over extra $$$$$$ for this capability. ... show more
