  • If you are wondering...
I ended up buying this but I purchased it with questions, none of the other reviews seemed to answer my questions so here are my unanswered questions that have been answered. Do you need to use this with the plug? You don't you can just connect it to your computer and your computer can power it. But if you have a portable monitor like I do you may need to plug it in for extra power. OR if you have a game system that needs a powered storage bank like a Wii U, you can use this to give it enough power to use on your Wii U. Can I just use the plug and not plug it into a computer? You can use it as a type of charger for your usb charging needs. the only reasons why you would plug it into your computer is if you need to use a device such as a wireless usb mouse, a usb monitor, putting music on your phone etc. The usb cord is useful on the hub is useful for getting you the connectivity to the computer if you need it. You can use this hub anywhere in your house. You don't have to use it with a computer. But if you are you need to plug the usb cable into your computer so that your mouse, phone, monitor etc can connect to it. The usb cord doesn't seem long enough. It works great with a usb extender. I have several just in a drawer because you never know when you can use one and you usually need one when you don't have one. The hub works with extenders as well. my monitor is pluged into the hub with an extender which is plugged into my computer and works fine. My other thoughts on this is that it really works great. It's one of the most compact hubs I've ever seen and it allowed me to really organize my mess of wires. I only have two usb ports on my lap top and was using a hub running off of another hub. This really takes away the clutter and adds functiionality because not all hubs will connect to your computer. Some hubs will only charge your usb items. So make sure if you want to use this with any other device that needs to work on your computer, make sure you buys this! ... show more

  • WORKS work as described and then some
I have the 7 port USB 3.0 connected to a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. I have been able to connect two WD Passports one a 2TB and the other a 4TB. I transferred a 100GB mixed set of files from the 2TB to the 4TB While this transfer was going on at USB 3.0/Hard Drive speeds I also had a Samsung 850 Pro 1 TB in an HDE Clear USB 3.0 Gen 1 external case running a full crystaldiskmark6 benchmark test running. No hiccups at all the benchmark was as expected High 400 Read and Low 400 write. I have no idea how long this will last it appears well made for your basic 7 port USB 3.0. This is what I was looking for in a 7 port hub. So many would just lock up just having the two external hard drive hook up much less transferring 100GB of files. The built-in cable is heavy USB 3.1 Gen 2 type wire so be aware of that if you don't need to use for large data transfers I guess the only con would be the brightness of the blue LED's and they do bleed over to the port next to them but only on the side next to it so you can tell that the port is turned off. I will revisit this review should anything change in the next few months. 2020-05-03 my first on is still working great and I have purchased 2 more. I have never experienced a data transfer failure with any of the three. This is the one if you need to transfer a lot of data over 2 or more external hard drives at the same time. I'm not saying other companies haven't caught up with this unit but they hadn't when I bought the first one. I haven't felt the need to try any others. ... show more

  • Atolla Hubs Are The Best
This is the third Atolla Hub I've owned and they are all great. They have become my primary USB hub brand of choice. My first one is used in my car and has never had connection issues. My second one powers my wife's various electronics on her nightstand and she has said they have never given her problems. This one just replaced my Amazon Basic USB 3.0 hub which finally (after 2 years) started giving me connection problems. The build and materials all feel like high quality. What sets this apart from other high quality hubs are the on/off buttons that allow you to "disconnect" things without having to remove them from the hub -- it's a killer feature that I'm surprised other manufacturers haven't copied yet. Can't go wrong with this purchase. ... show more

  • Uses a power brick for power, some drives don't like it. Good hub
From the picture I thought this was larger than it actually was, which in my opinion is a good thing. I plugged it into a USB 3.1 port and plugged the power brick in which took up a lot of space in my power strip, I would have rather had a laptop style power adapter with the brick in the middle but it is what it is and I don't think it was worth taking off a star. Just be mindful that you will need that space. I plugged in several USB flash drives and they were immediately recognized and worked fine, when I got to my 256 GB flash drive it didn't work at all period and I tried every port on top. I also tried several USB Hard drives and I noticed that some worked and others didn't. This is not a big deal for me personally because I mainly got this to have better access to the ports on the back of my computer and the drives that work with it are now permanently living in the hub. I can still use the ports on the front of my computer for the devices that don't work with it, so it is a good compromise. I suspect although USB 3.1 drives should be backward compatible with USB 3.0 which is just USB 3.1 generation one, that for some reason my USB 3.1 which are generation 2 don't seem to work with this hub. ... show more
